Official Onkyo TX-SR707 Thread [No Price Talk] - Page 68

I had a 707 refurb delivered yesterday and hooked it up last night. Ran Auyssey this morning and I can definitely notice the difference in sound from my 10-year old Yamaha RX-V1000. The reviewer looks fine with no blemishes at all.

There are only two quirks that I have to work through. One, I just assumed that it would have a digital audio output that I could use for my wireless headphones. I should have looked more closely before I bought it, but it isn't too big of a deal.

The second issue involves my TiVo HD. I have it temporarily hooked up with a component cable to the receiver that feeds my Panny plasma via HDMI. I have some additional HDMI cables coming this week that I will use to connect it to the receiver. As it stands now, I am having a delay with the picture coming through for a few seconds when I change channels. When I change channels or go to the TiVo menu, I get a no signal message on my plasma for a few seconds before the picture comes back. The sound comes in right away, but the video delay is kind of annoying. I've been doing some searching on these forums, but haven't seen anyone else having the same issue.

Check your HDMI output on your 707 and try setting it to 'Through' if it's not already.

When I first hooked up my cable box via HDMI to my 707 I had the 707 HDMI output set to upscale to 1080p. Changing some HD channels was sometimes 2-4 seconds longer than normal for the picture to switch.

I finally realized the lag was due to the TV channels with different resolution. (eg: 1080i to 720p). When the channels had the same resolution, there was no lag.

I set the 707 HDMI output to 'Through' and that resolved the lag. I can't see any PQ difference w/ the output set to Through.
Thanks, I was getting the lag with both the TiVo set to native and the receiver set to through. I just switched the TiVo a fixed resolution and left the receiver on through and that took care of the problem.

I've got to say I am surprised how cool it is running. I checked one out at Best Buy and I couldn't keep my hand on top of it. I've been running it all day in a closed console (with the back off) and it is pretty cool to the touch.

Just got my 707 ordered. Should be here next week.. I'll post a review once it's here.

I have FIOS and used to have the clicking issue as well. Setting Dolby Digital in the "Listening Mode Preset" menu to TV Logic for the CABL/SAT input solved the clicking issue for me too.

Hey Oak (or anyone else) - Do you lose any audio quality by making any of these changes to address the clicking?

Newbie here looking for some help. I just got the 707 and set it up today (5.1 system). I have an OPPO BDP-83 hooked up through HDMI-1. When I played my first DVD tonite through it I was not able to select the audio source that was being output by the BRP. Example, during "Firewall" I selected Dolby Digital as the output from the BRP but was not able to select it on the 707. When I pressed the "Display" button on the remote it only showed PCM 2ch as the input signal. Next I tried T2 BR disc and chose the DTS Master Audio HD source and again the receiver displayed only a PCM 2ch input and I was not able to select the DTS-MAHD. On the BDP-83, I set the speaker configuration to down mix 7.1 audio to 5.1 and that didn't work either.

I'd really like to enjoy the surround settings. I ended up choosing all speaker stereo because it sounded better than my other choices.

Anyone have any ideas what's going on???

Thanks

The center said they had called back to Onkyo's main support department for help and Onkyo reps said they had never heard of the 1080p/24 problem with this unit.

When I asked if they had upgraded the firmware, the center rep said that they typically do not update the firmware unless Onkyo advises them to do so. He also said Onkyo firmware upgrades were very difficult to perform.

The center said that they would give the unit another look next week and call me with an update.

I'm thinking that they are not going to be able to fix this problem and I'm probably going to have to sell this otherwise great unit. The 1080p/24 issue is apparently not severe enough for the majority of posters in this thread to even notice, but it certainly bothers me.

That's crap on the service center's part. The firmware should ALWAYS be updated when a unit visits a service center regardless if it's related to the problem or not. The firmware update involves using a laptop and going through the serial port and uploading a couple of files. It takes about 45 minutes to an hour and it's actually pretty easy, as I updated the firmware on my TX-SR705 about 2 years ago. If they can't do it, then they're not much of a service center and I'd demand my unit back.

I have an early firmware as I got this unit when it first came out. I'm aware of the 1080p/24 fix (video processor: skip), but my unit always resets this value as it's an early firmware bug. It's getting old going to the front of my receiver everytime i want to watch a blu-ray. If I can't figure out a way to update this thing myself then I may have to sell it to joe six-pack and either get another one w/ the known latest firmware or get a different model w/ no bugs. That would be a real shame as this unit is great besides the 1080p/24 bug. I'm not willing to send it in either as I pretty much use it everyday. This is the second time i got bit by onkyo firmware. The first time i was able to get around it, if i can't get around it this time, I'm officially through w/ Onkyo.

How you set the 'audio out' options on your OPPO effects what the 707 receives.

AFIK, if you have the audio out set to PCM/LPCM on the OPPO (which means the OPPO is doing the audio decoding- ie: DTS Master MA etc) then the 707 will show PCM when you push the display button.

Try setting the audio out on the OPPO to 'Bitstream', then the 707 will be doing the decoding and should indicate the audio format being received when you press display button.

Need some help from experienced users. Have had the 707 for 1 week. I have a HTPC and am trying to have DTS and HD streams go to the onkyo .

1.) What setting or listening mode should the 707 be on to receive DTS from another source? I see "FAKE" DTS lights on at all times with certain listening modes.

2.) I need to confirm whether or not I am successful in setting up my PC using an ATI HDMI 5XXX Series card. My current display shows "PCM and FSP 48000. What should I use to truly indicate whether DTS is coming through?

Interesting post. I forgot to mention earlier that the service center rep said that firmware upgrading can introduce new problems that weren't there before and that firmware updates are sometimes only for certain batches of a product. I personally have never heard of that before.

Anyway, is there any way we can get our hands on the newer firmware and software to perform the upgrade at home?

Thanks for the reply. I actually figured it out this morning. Operator error. I had activated the "TV sound ON" while setting it up, which is normally defaulted to OFF. Took care of the problem!

I did double check the OPPO and it is set to Bitstream. Thanks again!

I'm having the video stuttering problem with 1080p/24 sources. The firmware in my receiver is version 1.09. I want to update the firmware so the video processor skip setting is saved when the receiver is off.

I see that firmware for the TX-SR707 is available through the link in the Onkyo Firmware thread.
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...8#post18083678

Does anyone know what version this is?

Has anyone successfully updated the firmware in this receiver?

WOW! What a find! That's exactly what I was looking for! If the Service Center doesn't update it, then I guess I can now. Thanks!

GREAT find! This could help me a lot, though I dare not try it myself until it is confirmed to be honest. I know, there has to be someone to try it first, but I dare not try it as first myself
Though I downloaded it and will try it if people can confirm it is safe.

EDIT:
Well, I couldn't resist trying, though it does not update :/ Burned it as per instructions and set up my unit to sp/dif update, though NOTHING. Too bad..... Tried this using my BD-player as CD player btw.

It was noted in the other thread that this is the ftp site for the European service center. It is possible/likely that this is firmware for the European version of the receiver. If that is the case, the update may not work on a U.S. unit. Worse yet, if it did work, it might mess something up.

Having said that, I will be interested to see if someone *does* get it to work, or can come up with the FTP address to the US service center.
I'm feeling adventurous (reckless?) today, so I took the plunge and updated my receiver by playing the wav file with iTunes on an iBook via Airport Express connected to the receiver via TOSLINK optical. Your player and connection must support bit-perfect digital playback in order to update the firmware.

My receiver's main firmware version is now 1.18. The video processor skip setting is now saved when the receiver is turned off.

I'll post more after I have time to test the receiver.

In the other thread they also talked about using an old-school CD player or old DVD player to perform the update. I wonder if a BD player handles a CD's signal a bit differently than traditional CD players?

I have a feeling that at least for the 707, the firmware for the US and Euro models probably works exactly the same.

That's great news! I'll be anxious to see if 1.18 gets rid of the need to do the video processor skip to eliminate the 1080p/24 bug.

Also, can anyone recommend another "bit-perfect" playback device besides the iBook (which I don't have)?
To test for bit-perfect playback you can play a DTS encoded wav file or CD. If you hear noise, playback is not bit-perfect. You can download the Surroundtest DTS zip file at the bottom of this page:
http://www.sr.se/sida/default.aspx?programID=2445

Unzip the file and burn the wav as a music CD. I was able to update my receiver via the Optical 1 input with the Onkyo receiver configured as follows:

Menu > 1. Input/Output Assign > 4. Digital Audio Input > CD > OPT1

I've added some notes in blue text to Onkyo's firmware instructions:

FW UPG TX SR 707

Please refer to the following steps.

CD Update)
Tool: CD-R, CD player, Optical/Coaxial cable
ONKAVR0001_M200EAEA00TOMAMA.all.wav

0. Burn a CD-R with the given wav-formatted file as a music disc.
Connect a CD player, turn it on, and put the FW disc in Tray.
1. Turn on the unit and wait about for 30 seconds.
2. Hold down [DISPLAY] and press [ON/STANDBY].
While Main FW Version is shown, press [RETURN].
3. Select "ALL" to upgrade by left/right cursors.

ARM(DA830=Network): DSP 1st
VSP: VSP(=Video in 2008 or older models)
VMPU: Video(=HDMI in 2008 or older models)
MMPU: Main

Select "S/PDIF" by up/down cursors and press [ENTER].

4. Make sure that "S/PDIF Update" is shown on Front Panel.
5. Start playing back the FW disc.
6. Make sure that Front Display shows as follows.
(Except "Downloading," only target FWs are subject to display the status.)

One more tip: You may want to disconnect your speakers before updating the firmware to avoid some nasty noises.

Thanks

Yes, upgrading firmware results in a totally slicked unit.

Good to hear that others are having good experiences with updating! I will try another player tomorrow. My unit is a European unit, so that should not present me with any problems, I just want to get rid of the 1080p/24 bug without sending it halfway acros the galaxy to only notice they didn't solve it. Doing these things yourself is best, if you are careful ofc!

Yes, the main firmware and any others are updated via S/PDIF.
Just to report that I went ahead and tried the update. It went without a hitch and I now show as having firmware 1.18. It takes approximately 20 minutes.

BTW, I used my Insignia WBRDVD BD player to do the update. set output to PCM and 48kHz. Note that if you do something wrong after you get to the point that your panel is displaying "SPDIF Update", you must shut the unit off and start over. For example, I forgot to switch to the correct input. I went back , switched to the correct input, got back to the update screen, hit play on the CD, and nothing happened. I had to power cycle, make sure I was on the proper input, and then get to the update screen and then everything was good. I have to admit I was getting a bit antsy as the disc approached the last couple of minutes of playing time and still had a couple of steps to go.

I got the same Checksum results as Signal, which I would expect using the same update.

How did you connect your 707 to XPA-3. Are you using pre-out or digital out to XPA3?
Friend of mine told me that 807 digital out to XPA-5 is working fine.

Thanks,

Well, I have done it! Used a Denon CD-player of an acquintance. Though through coax it did not work, when using optical it went flawlessly! So my 707 has 1.18 firmware on it now, thanks for the help all!
Has anyone put the 1.18 firmware update that is listed a few posts up on a US model 707 yet? If so pease also post your results. Thanks
post #2040 of 3560
Would anyone here who has updated it as well, mind trying it with Bi-Amping? The former firmware version didn't work too well with it, but I know they fixed it in a later 807 firmware. Just set up my set completely and don't have the right cables lying around atm to test it myself. Would be nice if someone wouldn't mind doing this! Thanks in advance!
