There are way too many "no sound" problems reported here occurring about 18 to 24 months after purchase. Onkyo should recall all 707s and replace the faulty parts. We should team up and notify Onkyo about our problems. I emailed Onkyo but no reply. Maybe a formal letter will help

I guess I have been lucky. I have had my 707 operating on a daily basis. We don't watch TV using it's internal speakers. I'm still using the original software and so far, after more than two years, not one hiccup out of this unit.

I shouldn't crow, the Onkyo replaced a more expensive Harman Kardon 5000 that died at the 26 month mark, two months after the warranty expired!
It was weird to log into this forum and see so many with the same issue all at the same time. I'm 22 months in with the 707. Just in the last week ... Occasionally, when first turning it on the for first time of the day, after it rests for the night, I hit the cable on, then AVR and get sound. Then hit TV and no more sound. Turning the unit on and off seems to resolve it but wondering if more is to come...

Did the 1.27 upgrade back in June and that resolved my clicking issue (wasn't that big of deal actually).

I didn't check out the other source inputs when this happens but will have to experiment.

to be continued,
Martin

Martin,

I never upgraded my software. On the clicking issue, I solved that problem by changing the default in one of the menus (can't remember which, right now).

So far, after two yrs of daily use, no problems.
hughh,

yah i went thru all the possible option settings and extensive research to try and get rid of the clicks. I had an early firmware.

The sound loss is still happening to me randomly when i first turn it on, but not every time. Turning the avr off and on again fixes it. I went to see if all input sound was lost and it was including testing audio channel sounds in setup.

So since i voided the warranty i see a new receiver in my future. Been a big Onkyo fan for years but his may send me looking at others.

Any suggestions anyone? Got to have the 7.2 and zone two capabilities w/7.2 when zone 2 is running.

This is an alarming issue.... Are there any Europeans under the no sound issue victims?

I've also asked that (#3122) but got no answers

Unfortunately yes. Just got the no sound thing yesterday for my bit over two years old 707. Somehow I was able to get the sound back by toggling wih pure audio button, but by what I'm seeing in this thread, the sound will probably be gone tomorrow.

well the upstate ny regional repair shop has worked on my no sound issue and repaired "intermittent connections in audio circuit". what the heck does that mean? For some reason, i am not confident that the intermittent problem occurred for them before service work and that there was not much to be done when Onkyo won't admit the problem. I asked Onkyo if they will extend warranty for another year given numerous issues posted, effort to repair, etc. but theirresponse was "Thank You for contacting Onkyo USA Product Support.
Your issue has been forwarded to the appropriate representatives for
review. Thank you for your input and analysis.

What a joke

In the past month, my 707 started to act with no sound. When I pulled the plug and later placed back in, the sound was fine. Today, half way through a movie, it decided to give up completely. No sound from the speakers. No speakers displayed on the LED screen. In Tuner mode, I could hear from the headphone.

Certainly looks like a problem around 24 months !! Sigh.. I have to drive 2 hrs to go to the service center.

If someone has a bad/no-sound 707 ... sitting in the closet awaiting the dumpster or a trip to Goodwill ... PM me.

If it's not too much ... I'll pay the shipping to get it here. I'll try to fix it, and if successful, I'll post the directions here, like I did for this Panny:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1149887

Since it's just a hobby, I can't really warranty the repair ... I was thinking I would keep the 707 to repay my time and trouble. I mean ... if you want to spend the right amount of money to get it fixed ... just get it done at an authorized service center. Likely, most people would just buy a new one.

It should help others. I already have the 707 schematic. I was planning on re-flowing the solder on one or more SMT IC chips with the hot-air gun on my soldering-rework-station. I've fixed a laser printer, laptop, and desktop video card this way over the years.

I don't want any "junk" or damaged units. It needs to be in good shape ... and no-one should have been inside it (except maybe a qualified tech. from a service center). It should power on and all functions work ... but have the intermittent or always "no sound problem".

It would be nice if those who got theirs repaired under waranty tell us what was made (board replaced, etc.).
That way, a home repair could be made, if possible.

Mine was bought in Germany (online) and send it back (from Portugal) would already be a high cost, even if under waranty (24 months). It's 18 month old, so I'm expecting problems anytime soon.

Those who had problems:
  1. Do you leave it in standby mode?
  2. Do you have a switch to let it unpowered when not in use?
  3. What are you HDMI settings (concerning auto-power on, etc.)?
Finally my sound went completely. also no speakers displayed on the LED screen. Seems the unit doesn't recognize the incoming signal.

I did a factory reset and got sound back. Had to re-run Audessey ect. and all seemed fine. until the next day. NO sound again. Turning it on and of a couple time does bring it back. But doomed to completely fail soon

Contacting Onkyo Monday, but definitely looking to purchase a new receiver.

The Marantz SR6006 is looking like the way to go.

Happy ending to long no sound saga. Onkyo came through and made me a satisfied customer. They shipped me a 709 as a replacement. Still no idea what was causing the no sound problem in the 707.
Called Onkyo based on BMEL's Happy Ending above. After sitting on hold for 20 minutes I decided to use the callback option. Starting writing a letter to the CEO of Oknyo USA when I got a call back.

Explained the situation that it's been sitting in repair for 3 weeks and he confirmed a backlog util sometime in mid-November. We traded some repair center info and he volunteered to send me a NEW 709. He actually apologized that it was new and not a refurbished 707 and the only models the have are the new 709 with HDMI 1.4a for 3D and network connectivity :-) .

I hemmed and hawed, but took him up on his offer. New would have to do! Let's see if it shows up at my door as promised!

You guys that are getting NEW replacements, were you still under warranty? Or did Onkyo just step up for bad parts issues? I have a 707 as well, purchased March 2010. I've done the update, and so far so good, but all these that have been taking a dive have me worried.

Mine is under Warranty....with just 3 more months left of the 2 year warranty.

Save your receipt!

Under warrenty
For those of you that are not fortunate enough to get a replacement unit or are otherwise beyond the 2 year warranty ... if you purchased with a charge card then the major ones (especially Amex) generally add 1 additional year of warranty which they will then either repair or replace at their option. So check with your card's provider before scraping the unit.
Great reminder tip......I've resorted to that option once or twice...it takes a while, but one way to get satisfaction.

My 707 came back from repair with the following statement:

Reflow solder on IC Q3001 on HDMI board.

According to the schematics ...

It's on the HDMI-0132 board. It's a SMT IC DA830 ... 100's of pins. The DSP chips are also on this same board. They call it the "HDMI Board" because the HDMI sockets are on it, but according to the schematic, this board does a lot more than just HDMI ... looks like it might handle all the DSP, Video processing, and general processing functions as well.

If I actually had one I could tell you more (I instead have a 607). If someone could take a nice high-res pic of it, it would be helpfull. It's right on top and easy to see (just remove cover and it's right there). The Service Manual doesn't show the boards as they are physically laid-out ... also the Block Diagram is kind of hard to follow.

Mine was the same. "Traced problem to and resoldered Q3001 in the DSP circuit."

Seems there may be a common weak point.

Thanks. This information is very important as it allows us to try a solution in a repair facility with soldering capabilities nearby at a fraction of the cost (if any!).
If/when mine gets there, I'm not going to send it back to Germany as my first step .

Ok, I'm officially worried now. Fired up the receiver this afternoon to find the no audio issue once again. I soft reset and it's back to normal, but I can't help wondering if it's about to go once again. I'm thinking if it does I'll be having some more serious calls with Onkyo. Sending it off for repair once I can handle, but if this goes south again....

Bad soldering?
I cannot stop thinking about those who have their receiver sent to repair and it worked just fine before any intervention. Can transportation "shocks"/vibrations get the contact working again?
Can you just finger press that IC if it ever stops working again?

Keep us posted, please.

Count me in on the no sound problem. I just spent the past two days re-hooking up every wire multiple times with resets in between. Even tried some other speakers.

Every once in a while it works. Then I plug in another speaker and nothing! The lights that indicate which speakers are active show me that nothing is going to the speakers.

Can you try to finger press that IC (as my last post)? If sometimes it works, it should make a diference (I hope!)
