Not sure where you want me to finger press. I haven't ever opened up the case, so I'm leery about going that route.

Certainly nothing on the outside of the case helps as I've tried just about everything.

So barely a month after getting the receiver back, I'm down again. Same symptoms as before, no speker icons light and all that. I'm going to contact ABL and Onkyo before I go in the case. I wish Onkyo'd step up to the plate on this one.

On that note, can someone provide a diagram of where this IC Q3001 is on the unit? I'm waiting till I at least talk to Onkyo and ABL to see what either of them have to say, but assuming I'm going to get nowhere with them.

If you take a high-res picture of the "HDMI Board" (with a real camera) and upload it here ... I will show you. It doesn't have to be removed ... Just a few screws and the top cover is all that has to be removed ... shouldn't affect warranty status (as long as you don't touch anything inside, power is off, etc.). No one would even know.

It really depends on the "package" or physical form of the IC chip.

If it's a lack of solder it might help. But usually, it's a "cold" or bad solder joint ... in which case pressure wouldn't help.

According to the schematic, q3001 has several hundreds of pins or contacts. It only takes ONE pin connection to cause a problem.

According to the schematic, the chip in question is a Texas Instruments DA830, which they call their Aureus digital audio processor. You should be able to find a chip that has DA830 on it. Probably the full text will be TMS320DA830. The PCB board may also be labeled Q3001 next to it. It is probably one of the larger chips on the board.

My receiver turns on and I see the display; the sound is fine... 5 seconds later POOF the display disappears: the sound is fine and the picture is fine. Any time I make a change in volume or output, all the display comes back on, but disappears about 5 secs after any changes have been made. I looked throught the book to see if this was a "choice" that "accidently" got pressed, but I haven't found anything related to that. I did mess with the dimmer switch, but that only made it dimmer before it disappeared.
I found the answer! The receiver listening mode was set to "Pure Audio" mode. For whatever reason this turns off the display!

Correct. From what I read in the manual, it is so there isn't any possiblilty of noise in the signal from the display.

After a week since reinstalling repaired unit, all is well and lack of sound hasn't been an issue. maybe i am lucky, maybe i haven't had it running long enough. Maybe the "Boys from Syracuse" who repaired the receiver know what they are doing!!! Still have to tweak speaker setup again but sure is nice to hear rumbles again.

Any chance you ask them if they replaced components (boards, IC, etc.) or just corrected intermittent contacts (soldering job)?

So a quick question:

I have the 707, and love it, no issues so far. I recently purchased a Panasonic VT30 3D display and was wondering if I'll even be able to use the 3D function with this receiver? I currently have my PS3 (for Blu-rays), 360, and DVD player going to the receiver, and then the single HDMI to the TV. Is this still OK?

Also, do I need to buy new HDMI cables for my new display?

Thanks!
You will not get 3D through this receiver because the HDMI version is 1.3a and you need 1.4 for 3D. If you had a 3D blu ray with duel HDMI outputs, you could send one to the receiver for Dolby Tru HD and DTS Master audio and the second connection to the Plasma for 3D.

So I cracked the case on mine yesterday and took a look. I was able to locate Q3001, but finger pressure made no difference. I'd have had to remove the board to see the contact pins underneath to check for broken solder. Trying to get in touch with ABL as I"m assuming they'd warrant their repairs.

My 707 just blew on me again for the second time. I am still in warranty by 5 months. I heard from someone on the Canuks board, that Onkyo replaced the entire unit with a new system from a comparable line of theirs.

As this is the second time this unit has failed on me, I am very leery on allowing them to simply repair it again, as I know it will blow a 3rd time when its out of warranty. Anyone know if there is someone 'at' Onkyo USA to talk to, rather than relying on my 'only' service center in the area?
I started the replacement process with a message sent via the Onkyo website support page. They responded with a phone number to call.
my 707 went out on me with the no sound problem about a week now. I have it for about 2yrs. The sound will come on intermittently whenever it want to. Today I turn it on and there is no sound. I went into the onkyo menu and change some of the default setting in and now the sound came back. I didn't buy the warranty when i brought this unit from VideoOnly. So i guess i can't send the unit in for repair. If it fail again then i'll open up the unit to check for the cold solder on the Q3001 IC.

Out of curiosity, what did you say in the message? I sent one into support several days ago along a similar line and got no reply at all. Was going to call them today.

I'd tried multiple times the last couple night to upgrading the firmware from 1.05 to 1.27 with my ps3 but no luck at all. Today i decide to try my ps2 and it work. Here is what i did...i removed all connection from and to the tx-sr707 including all speaker wires except the optical cable in opt1 input. power on the receiver- selected CD, press the CD button and the Standby button..firmware display then press the Return button, select the S/PDIF>All. Get my PS2 powered up and ready with the burn cd inside waiting to be play. Right when I press the Enter button on the receiver I press Play button (which is the X-button on the controller) the receiver automatic pickup the firmware. You will see it starting to download....writting...downloading (16 min into the cd)....download...wait until it complete all of th writting....OK:SUM = D72F7E3E. Just got my brand spankin' new TX SR-709 from Onkyo. They are swapping out 707 units (under warranty) with the latest model. Just hooked it up and currently checking out all the new features (network streaming) and new menu options. Just did a network firmware upgrade....sweet!

Michael Russo is the guy.... Call him with the sob story how it's died and been sitting in repair depot. Phone Number 201-785-2600 Extension 2387

Good luck!

Are these replacement 709 units covered under a new 2 year warranty or just till the end of the 707 warranty?

I am wondering the same thing. I have an email into my guy at Onkyo with that exact question. Without a retail sales receipt, I am not sure how I'll get service should I need it on this unit....

Can't speak for Onkyo, but with Denon refurb/replacement .. the warranty is good from the original purchase only.

Haven't tried him yet, but so far the only response I can get is I have to send it back to ABL first. At least ABL paid for the shipping this time...

So, I am sending in my two receivers to Onkyo for evaluation and repair/replacement.
HQ wants to examine it. Maybe this will finally prompt them to recognize a general problem there?

When I was packing it up, I did one last run on diagnosing and found something funny:
Selecting pure audio together with FM Radio and headphones produced sound on the headphones. My guess is that this combo bypasses pretty much all circuity, probably other analog inputs would work also with the headphones.

Other combinations - no sound.
Meaning:
pure audio with FM Radio and speakers - no sound
FM Radio and headphones, and no pure audio - no sound
HDMI sources with pure audio and headphones - no sound
...
Let me know if you observe the same.

That would confirm the HDMI logic board which seems to be the predominant problem found in most of these...(mine too)

HDMI bug with TX-NR709 replacement

I use HDMI Control from powering on my Sony TV to turn on the receiver. Using my Tivo remote to turn the TV on and off would leave the 707 in the same HDMI input as when it was turned off. The NT709 does NOT behave the same.

Instead the genius's at Onkyo programmed this new model to automatically switch to TV/CD mode whenever it receives a power-on command over HDMI. They're engineers assume that ALL HDMI connected TVs support ARC (Audio Return Channel) functionality and that we WANT it to take the audio from the TV. I don't, I want the audio from my Tivo box! There is no way to disable this function and make the 709 act the same as the 707.

My wife needs a simple way to turn the TV on and off. The Tivo remote has been that solution. Now, If I use the Tivo remote, I need to press the power button to turn on the TV, wait 15 seconds and press the Onkyo remote once (or sometimes twice) to switch from TV/CD mode to Cable/Sat mode (once or twice depending on timing). Disable HDMI control on the TV and use both the Tivo and Onkyo remotes, buy a Harmony remote or see what I can setup for a macro on the Onkyo remote that is easy enough for my wife to use, and find the REALLY small MY TV button.

This sucks!

+1 for Harmony (or similar Universal Remote with macros). I really like my Harmony 670.
