I personally think Height would still make an impact for you. I really like THX Loudness Plus and the Faroudja 1080p scaling makes it worth it in my opinion. Especially OSD Volume over HDMI. Not that I don't like the 607, I really do but it doesn't compete with the "Middle End" 707 receiver... Of course I don't know a receiver below it that comes close. At least not available yet. And I am confident the 707 bests many directly above it to.

Hi Joerod, thanks a million for your great diligence in posting these reviews and pictures. It really helps us guys in the market to buy a new AV receiver. I need to buy about 7 more in the coming months for my house so I am following all your reviews!

From the 607 Manual:

When the Audio TV Out setting is set to On, or
TV Control is set to On and you're listening
through your TV's speakers (see page 24), if you turn
up the AV receiver's volume control, the sound will be
output by the AV receiver's front left and right speakers.


The manuals for the 707/807 do not specifically state stereo output. Can anyone confirm that audio operates properly from the AVRs speakers while TV Audio Out is set to on?

For the 607, many of your basic Audio Modes(DTS, Dolby, MC PCM) aren't available and during Direct mode(and others) you only get .0 sound, subwoofer is not engaged.

I believe it is converting the sound to 2.0 for the TV.

joerod in your scaling examples what is the source material exactly? and the inputs you are using on the onkyo exactly?

I am really curious how it scales 1080i highdef and 480p standarddef satellite tv up to glorious 1080p. Since I do not have a 1080p set yet I cannot test it yet. Thank You.

My sources are all DirecTV. These particular sources were all 1080i. In the 807 Review I posted some 480i shots of Seinfeld. All were scaled to 1080p.

Joe, thanks for the review of the 707. I just hooked up my 707 and it's fantastic. I got it to replace an entry-level AV receiver Sony 720. Substantial upgrage IMO. The 707 is my third Onkyo AV receiver (onkyo 502, 805, 707). I have the 805 for main my main home theatre.
Now this 707 is for my everyday/smaller gaming/home theatre:

guys, at this moment, where/what is the best price i can find the 707 for? im ready and set to pull the trigger on this model, thanks god i waited a year and didnt buy the 706 from last year, it was full of bugs, blue dots on the screen and what not, this one doesnt seem to have any major problems, haha i waited 2 years im upgrading for the 606. i really cant wait, im just waiting to find a decent price, $650 sounds like a good price..

Well I couldn't wait any longer and picked up a 707 this afternoon. I feel like a kid on Christmas morning!

Okay guys, after some research, i can get the 707 for $685 SHIPPED and no tax from an onkyo authorized dealer, my question is, is the reciever itself worth paying $685 for or i should wait for the price to drop more? what is the lowest the reciever is going to go for in your opinion in the next 3 months ?

If you want the cheapest price on the 707, wait a year and buy then. $685 is a good deal but will be bettered in a short period of time. The question is the 707 worth $685 to YOU. Reality is the price will not be THAT much better in time.

I paid $399 for my 360. They can be had for MUCH less than that now. To me it has been worth every penny that I paid. The people that waited missed out on months and years of enjoyment.

i cant wait a YEAR because i can sell my 606 for a good price now. question is, is the 707, in general worth $680. because i know the 706 was NOT worth it. it was full of bugs to begin with, the 707 has no bugs at all it appears from reviews.

Hey, I just pickup the 707 at video only for a pretty good deal. For some reason, when I go into the audyssey setting it doesn't get me an option for setup, do I need to plug in the mic in order for that to work? I don't remember see a mic included inside the package. any help will greatly appreciated. thanks.

yes u need to plug in the mic and the auddysey wizard wil come on. how much did u buy yours for?

It was listed at $799 but since I was getting the Samsung 46" LED HDTV. I talk the guy down to $600.

Need some help on setting the my home theater. I have 3 martin logan vignette that will be use for LCR and also a martin logan abyss subwoofer. what is the best calibration setting for the 3.1 surround sound using the onkyo 707?

Well so far I am very pleased with my 707. Having come from a TX SR573 (4 or so years old) I find this a big step up. I did try the 607, but after a week of playing around I was simply unimpressed. My 607 struggled with simple things such as video passthrough, with the picture in my eyes looking fuzzy compared to a direct connection to the TV. Perhaps it was a bad unit.

Anyway, the 707 is checking all the boxes right now. I am thrilled with the sound performance and don't have it customized yet. I did try running Audyssey, but so some reason it did not detect/push my sub, so it set up a 5.0 system. I plan to try again now, after reading why the sub did not work in Audyssey.

Very happy with the purchase ($660) - I just have a lot to learn to unlock the potential of this receiver.

Brandsmart USA - GA. Unsure if they like retailer/price discussion on here, but it was listed for $799 (my local Best Buy was $899). I got a salesman and said I was interested in the 607 ($469) and 707, but was looking to get out of the store for $700 max so the 707 was probably just beyond me (playing the game). He told me to wait and see what he could do. He came back saying he could beat that, and then when he ticketed the item it got even cheaper.

Run the Audyssey set up with the provided microphone and don't worry about it. See the set up recommendations in the Audyssey thread first for tips on getting the most out of it, and for sub settings prior to running Audyssey.

Quick question: it looks like the main difference between the 707 and the 807 is network firmware updates. I see all the Pandora/etc stuff, but I have Squeezeboxes, so I totally don't need any of that.

Basically, what I'm wondering is if there's a way to update a 707's firmware myself. I have no problem with hooking up a DB9 cable -- in fact, I have one connected to my PC right now. I don't mind it being inconvenient, as long as I can DO it.

If I know I can update it if it I need to, I'll be pretty relaxed about buying the 707, but if I'm forced to send it in for updates, given the number of updates the 806 apparently had, I might go 807, or maybe even Denon.

Does anyone know whether the 707 can memorize passthrough/upconversion settings for multiple inputs? For example, I have it set to passthrough for my DirecTV receiver, PS3 and Xbox360 (all showing at 1080i on my TV). However, my Wii shows as 480p as it is maintaining the passthrough setting. Ideally, I would like the Wii input (currently set as VCR/DVR) to upconvert to 1080i, yet maintain passthrough for all other settings.

I believe if you set it for 1080i, it only upconverts analog input anyway, and should leave HDMI input alone.

Hi, got the 707 and Im loving it. Audio is major upgrade from 605.

But...Im going into it from my PC with analog 7.1 from Creative card. Sound is there but 707 doesnt seem to be able to control volume OR setting up different effects seem to have no...effect.

Is there a setting that Im missing? Thanks

Actually - going from Creative card 7.1 analog to the 707. Im not sure it accepts it. My 605 did but Im not sure the 707 does.

Well the 707 is fully connected with the following setup:

707 > HDMI > Samsung Plasma (all input video's are output through this HDMI)
DirecTV HD DVR > HDMI > 707
PS3 > HDMI > 707
Xbox360 > Component/Optical > 707
Wii > Component/Analog > 707

My speaker setup is slightly older but performs as well as ever. I have Athena Point 5's (surrounds 80Hz - 20KHz, Center 60Hz - 20 KHz) and Athena ASP4000 sub. After running Audyssey the following settings were returned:

Front - 70Hz / -5.5db
Center - 60Hz / -5.0db
Surrounds - 70Hz / -3.5db
Sub - 80Hz (user set) / -15db (max reduction)

I am running all inputs with Audyssey enabled, as well as Dynamic EQ and volume correction light. However, my problem is my sub is not firing at all. I have started to tweak the settings from -15db to -8db and it seems to be coming through now, however it is a very difficult balance to strike. I am wondering if I should set my sub to 100 Hz crossover and increase the level.

My only other issue is the picture seems a little grainy on passthorugh now, however I think this is due to the HDMI cable and the HDMI inputs on my TV. It was fine earlier, then I screwed around with it without being able to see it (wall mounted) and feel I might have damaged the input on the TV.

(sub point - for as good as HDMI is, why did they make the connector so crap!).

I'm researching a new AV receiver, and I'm zeroing in on the Onkyo SR707 due to the Audyssey processing, especially DSX. It seems that I will see the biggest impact to my movie sound by adding wide speakers and using MultiEQ to configure it. Seems the 707 has lots of power for my big rec room, 25'x16'. I'm driving Paradigm Monitor 7 towers, Mirage centre & 10" sub and no-name rears. I'd say 75% us the use is for TV/movies.

I still want good music sound. My current Yamaha seems harsh to me, so my preference is a warmer sound.

So am I compromising anything with this unit, as compared to other similarly priced ones? For example, video upscaling?
