no you can't do it

the only thing i seen is a tutorial on how to do it on the 360 itself.

You used to be able to pay (something like 800 MSP) to have it changed.

Try calling 1-800-4-MY-XBOX.

Maybe I don't understand the question. Are you asking if you can change your GamerTag, or are you asking if you have to use your Xbox 360 to change it?

If you want to save yourself the 800 MS Points you could try asking all your friends to file a complaint against you with reason "Offensive Gamertag" or whatever MS calls it. With enough complaints you'll get a message that your GT was found to be offensive and they will make you change it.

You are assuming that he has a gamertag that is somehow offensive.

It doesn't matter what it is; there is just an algorithm that says x complaints against GT for offensiveness during Y time period and it flags it. They aren't actually checked by human eyes which can filter out non offensive stuff.

Do you have fact to back that up? Or are you just supposing?

It's not exactly published by Microsoft, so no, I can't technically back it up with documentation, but I will state this tactic was employed by my brother and several other people I know personally to change the GT w/o having to pay.

With 20 million people on xbl filing complaints of varying degree against other players it only makes sense to let the machines do the work; it would cost a fortune, and take a small army to investigate all the infractions.

he's right. i'm not sure how many complaints it takes, or the time period required, but i do know that people on my friends list had no where near offensive gamertags that have done it. they just sent out the same message to all of their friends, asking them to complain that their gamertag was offensive, and maybe a week later had a new gamertag...

yea, a company like Microsoft is not going to employ humans to look at gamertags when one of their best engineers can solve the problem via automation in one afternoon.

I did exactly this and it was around 15-20 complaints. Every game I'd play of hockey i'd ask the dude to complain about my name, pretty easy.
