But rebuild will include separate amp/preamp based on the speakers I purchase. Amp will be class D. There will be a sub woofer involved too.
It will be 50/50 HT and music. Plent of height, width, and depth on the shelves. My current candidate is the B&W 805s. What others should I consider.
I have been looking for a current thread on the Sunfire CRM series of small ribbon speakers without any luck. I would like to add some late news and hope this reaches a more recent discussion. Perhaps I should start a new thread. I am not trying to hijack your present discussion and this setup does fall within Jim Addy's price range.
I have fallen for these little beauties. The one weakness that can be difficult to overcome with the CRM2 has to do with the side firing dipolar woofers. They give a live spaciousness to the soundstage but can attenuate sound slightly from the upper base to lower midrange with some musical instruments. I believe this is because they are not firing directly at you in that range and so what you are hearing is primarily reflected sound. The CRM3 does not have this weak spot but also does not have the spaciousness that the CRM2 side firing woofers provide.
To cure this, I jury-rigged a vertical stacking jig with the CRM2 on the bottom and the CRM2C on top mounted vertically, not horizontally as originally intended. The front faces and ribbons are aligned and there is less than 1" of clearance between the two speaker cabinets. They still have a narrow, sleek look but WOW, what a combination of punch and spaciousness when fired up. No more attenuation from upper base to lower midrange. Percussion cracks, cello strings show off their natural bite and growl.
I am using an ICEpower 7 channel amplifier to run the CRM2s (and center/ surrounds), and a separate ICEpower stereo unit to run the CRM2Cs so each stack is capable of being fed 1000W/8ohm or 2000W/4ohm. I have two of the full size Signature EQ subs. I am blessed with a reasonably large, well proportioned living room so I have the freedom to raise SPLs to dramatic levels. I believe this current system will hang in there with any of the tower systems under $20K I am aware of at this time from deepest bass to shimmering highs.
I have designed a stacking plate to replace my temporary jigs. It is made from 3/16" steel with high compression elastomer mounting pads to protect the speakers and reduce unwanted vibration. It should be able to mount to any of the existing floor stands used for the CRM2 and CRM3. The speaker cabinets have the rear mounting, threaded inserts installed from the factory. The new plates should be ready to install in two weeks or so. If there is any interest here, I would be happy to send photos at that time.
If there are more current CRM threads out there, please let me know.
