Official OPPO BDP-83 Owner's Thread

Thread Starter
Greetings!
Since the OPPO Priority Preorder orders are being filled, I thought it may be time to start a regular owner's thread....

Just took advantage of the Priority Ordering‏ email I got a few days ago. I was torn between the Denon 3800 BDCI and the Oppo, but after extensive research and replies to my post in the other '83 threads I decided on the Oppo!
No dig against Denon, as I currently own the AVR 3808CI, but as an early adopter of HD media players (Toshiba X1, XA2 and Samsung BD-UP5000) I am ready for a stable and fast player with great customer support!
By all accounts, I have found that in the '83, as well as being able to play DVD Audio and SACD's!
I look forward to getting the '83 and enjoying some hassle free Blu viewing. Hopefully no more having to explain away video freezing or audio drop outs when premiering a new Blu with guests over....
Thanks again for the insight!

Had my first freeze up last night with "The Uninvited". Had periodic 1 sec pauses then a total freeze at the "body in the dumpster" scene. Had to eject and
chapter jump back and it played fine. Disc was from Netflix and was pristine. It did have the "center ring" label though.

Otherwise player has been great.

"Body in the dumpster" scene?

Might as well just tell me "whodunnit" now and save me from the possible freeze

All kidding aside, I wonder if the extraneous label is the culprit?

Has anyone noticed a difference in DVD PQ between the 983 and the 83? I had nearly a year's experience using the 983, and I have been playing with the 83 for about a month now. Just curious.

I can't set up the network on mine. I am trying to do a Manual setup as I have disabled the DHCP on my router. I enter an IP address, press OK and it gets cleared. The only addresses that stick are the DNS servers. And I can't exit from the Gateway prompt with OK, I have to use Return.

I'm not sure if it's my receiver or the BDP-83, but I don't get a center channel on DTS-HD MA tracks, the center channel occasionally drops with Dolby TrueHD (I have to cycle audio tracks to fix it), while center channel always works on BD with LPCM audio track.

Edit: Ahh, the network bug is a known issue.

"If you are connected to a router/hub/switch which has not been enabled for DHCP, you will need to disconnect the BDP-83 from the network before you can manually assign your IP, Sub Unit, Gateway and DNS server. Otherwise, the player will redact all inputs to defaults (000.000.000.000)."

I would be surprised if there was much difference. Both use the same scaler.

Mine is ordered and in transit. It was suppose to arrive Sat morning but the FedEx guy decided to come at 8am!!! So I missed it.

Should get it tomorrow.

Not to offend anyone but it was expected that Neruomancer would start this thread. The reason he wanted to wait was that Oppo has not released the 83 to the general public yet.
He has more information than anyone else regarding this player and has done much work in his beta testing to get this unit where it is today.

I've had my player for about two weeks now, very happy with it. came across the first disc that would not play............"Bug's Life" in Blue Ray doesn't work.

Super audio and DVD audio working great.
Extremely happy with this player.

Good find, 5TANGER!
That is helpfull info.
One great thing about this unit is it's flexability. I myself will be taking advantage of the USB for frimware upgrades or media playback.

No offense taken.
I figured I was essentially the "general public" since I was not involved in the EAP program. The fact that I belong to AVS did give me an edge in ordering one now, but holding off untill it was announced or released to JQP would not change anything here, as JQP probably does not subscribe to AVS, IMHO.

I will gladly work with Neruomancer so that he can post relavant info in the first post of this thread, including giving my login info so he can alter the first post.

If Neruomancer or the Mods feel that I was in error starting the thread at this point, I will do whatever they suggest.

I started the thread simply because I bought one today, and saw that one did not exist. While both the other OPPO BDP-83 threads that I was reading and posting in were valuable, I thought it would be beneficial to new owners who did not necessarily want to debate the '83 VS other BD players, or who might feel thier post did not belong on the "technical talk only" thread.

With all due respect no one has a priority right to start an owners thread (unless the "official" version has be enabled by a moderator ???). Now that it has started anyone with valuable information should be able to contribute.

My first question is, is there a way to do slow-motion once the pause mode is engaged? Currently, all I can do is do frame by frame.

Regards.

According to wmcclain's invaluable Unofficial OPPO BDP-83 Frequently Asked Questions:

You can get Slow playback in forward and reverse by pressing Pause and then using the right and left arrow buttons. The speed steps are 1/16, 1/8, 1/4 and 1/2.

So I take it this is the new new Official thread.

I got mine coming on Tuesday .

I'm tired of my noisy PS3 during BD playback , and I'll finally be able to see my Marantz SR8002 with the Dolby True-HD and DTS-HD Master Audio lights on .

Hey, isn't new better

New, new?
Not too sure about that. I know of three other OPPO BDP-83 related threads, but this is intended to be the general owner's thread, not restricted to EAP / technical talk, although it seems in retrospect that thread may be percieved as the Official owner's thread by default.

I know the Mods have seen this thread, as a certain inflammatory post directed at my audacity for starting this thread has been deleted, as well as my reply to that post.....

With all due respect, I don't see why... apparently the OP doesn't even have a BDP-83 yet so I don't see what insight gives him the ability to start the "Official Owners Thread." It seems that the current thread is getting valuable participation by people who actually own and use the player. I thought one of them should start the thread, not someone who just clicked enter on their web order form...

Why does it matter who starts it? As long as we have one. Now anyone can post here.

We already have a very useful thread and posts here distract from the ongoing relevant thread.

I was hoping that when the thread WAS started that it would be by someone who is familiar with the player.

I ordered a new amp today and thought that I should be the one to start the new OFFICIAL owners thread.

Don't get your hopes up...If I recall when I had the SR8002 the True-HD and DTS Master indicators only light up for a few seconds at the begining. They do not stay on during playback.

Never heard of that one. Have you tried it in another player? If it's just the BDP-83 that it's not working, let Oppo know about it.
A Bug's Life plays perfectly in my BDP-83. Might be a bad disc. Awesome blu ray by the way!
Since it seems that the moderators feel that this will be the official thread I would hope that the person who started it would work with the beta testers and others to update the first page of the post on a regular basis. It is very important that new information gets posted on page one with links to questions and answers. This thread will become very long and could become a mess without this. That is the reason why I had hoped that Neuromencer would start this thread.

I appreciate your efforts, and thanks for the links to the other threads and the FAQ, but Neuromancer has maintained all the previous Official threads and uses a specific layout for the first post.

If you really don't mind, would you ask the moderators to lock this thread and wait for a later official thread?

^^^^^ He didn't have to ask.
