Hudson: If Shepard Dies in ME2, He/She Wont Be Back for ME3

BioWare’s Casey Hudson has a stark warning for you lot going to play Mass Effect 2: you decide the fate of Shepard and if Shepard goes down the one way road, there’s no way back. Simply put, if he dies, he stays dead.

When we say that Shepard can die in Mass Effect 2, it’s not something that happens at points in the middle of the game. Yes, you can “die” in gameplay as normal but that’s not what we’re talking about here. It’s not a “Game Over” screen. It’s not a gimmicky thing where you make a choice, “die”, and reload to continue to the “real” ending. When you get to the very end of the story in Mass Effect 2, you will get one of a wide variety of climactic and satisfying endings. Depending on how prepared you were, your ending may involve Shepard making the ultimate sacrifice to accomplish the mission.

Speaking in a brand new developer blog post, the project lead for ME2 also gave more infomation to the “suicide mission” been given to Shepard.

In Mass Effect 2, you (as Commander Shepard) are faced with what appears to be a suicide mission: taking a team into the heart of enemy territory where you shouldn’t have any chance of coming back alive. Your survival therefore is based on how well you’ve built a team – who you recruited, how well-equipped they are, and whether they’re loyal to you. Loyalty (and the things you’ll do to earn it) is a central part of the game, and it is critical to Shepard surviving the final mission.

Paragon / Renegade decisions affect a lot of things in the game – and will affect which how the game ends – but they are completely separate from your character’s readiness to survive the final mission.

I don't know about you guys but I'm starting to miss more linear games.
It was bad enough when my dog died, now I may have to choose between saving virtual entity/city/whatever or my main charater.......... I'm going to say it....... WTF?!

Games are starting to feel like jobs with all the morale responibitlies (or lack off if your "evil) or is just me?

Hopefully Mass Effect will have something the "dog" game didnt... a multiple save, save anywhere feature. All games should have this, though it does take away some of the hard choices it also takes away some of the stress.

Mass effect has a fixed number of save slots per game but you can save almost anywhere. (Not in the middle of a battle sequence, though.) It also autosaves when you switch environs.

I wish Fable 2 had a way I could kill the damn dog in the beginning. Or at least tell him to stay at a house and leave me the hell alone.

I had a large amount of saves in Mass Effect. Enough that when I was getting my azz kicked by the blue lady over and over and over that I could back all the way back out (about 4 saves or so) to being back in the hanger bay and left the planet to do some other missions first.

Since this is already a day 1 purchase, I think I am just going to avoid any and everything about it until then (if possible).

the first one was a lot of fun. The 2nd one, I'm not sure if it's a day 1 buy (I try to shy away from non-MP games and would rather rent them or borrow them so save some dough, yes I am cheap). That being said, it's a day 1 rent if it's not on the same week as MW2

this is one of the easiest 1st day buy for me....

Fox News is going to have a field day with this female.

Premier of Subject Zero

I tried to like the first one, but I couldn't get into it. Too much landing on random planets, killing everyone there, and repeating. I really liked Jade Empire so I wanted to like ME as well. Might have to push through it and finish the game to try and give the sequel a chance with my original character though.

Maybe a tougher difficulty level would have livened up the combat for you? It's not just more HP for them, fewer for you, but rather fewer enemies tied to your rank, more immunities and protections for tougher classes of enemies, and special attacks for bosses, and such.

As much as I agree with you on the redundancy of the locales and cookie-cutter interiors, the combat always made up for it for me because it was constantly challenging and endlessly various, and of course amusing. Lift+throw still doesn't get old for me!

She sure kicked a lot of ass in that video. I don't get the 'Fox News' reference though.

Ah, right. Forgot all about that. Does that mean Shepherd or a crew member gets to have sex with her too?

*laughs*

I said it before and I'll say it again....
I'm getting sick of making morale choices. I don't know about you guys but thats sounds like real life.

I'm sorting of wishing for kicking ass and then choosing my one liner.
I really enjoyed ME the first time through, but I started to get really sick of choosing sides and helping who by double crossing who and is that good or bad etc?

Also if "I" can die (Shepard) whats my motovation for wanting to build up chars or have him be good etc..... back in FF7 if someone died it was an auxillary charater and the company didn't find out, it just hit you x hours into the game.

Anyone else think the subject zero could be the main charater if/when shepard dies?

How about spoiler warnings?
Sorry, I'm not quite sure what the spoiler was for. The 2nd line of this thread says someone may die. And FF7 has been out for sometime.
I think a spoiler warning is a little excessive considering they've mentioned that specific piece of information in an officially released trailer.

That'd be a help. Combat in the first game was just not very interesting. As an FPS it wasn't terrible but as an RPG it was a joke. Bioware has to redo the combat to add more options, more abilities, and make combat more dependent on the knowledge of such.

Mass Effect overall was pretty good but had a ton of problems.
I loved the first game and I am really excited to see the next game come out. Subject Xero looks like they took some of things Ashley would say and cut it into a trailer. I did like the "I will destroy you line".
I hate this new character.

Ok. I hadn't see that, and it seems like a pretty major plot point.
