Using Digital Audio Cable in Place of Red/White RCA?

Thread Starter
For reasons to complex to explain (having to do with a previous Receiver that caught fire and was replaced)... I had previously run (through the walls with great difficulty) a component cable (red/blue/green) and a digital audio cable (orange) OUT from my Receiver IN to my LCD TV.

With my replacement Receiver, I must run directly from the Satellite Box directly to my LCD TV. The Satellite Box has 2 optical digital Outs and analogue red/white RCA Outs.

So I connected the digital audio cable (orange) to the Satellite RCA (white) OUT and In to the TV RCA white. Seems to work fine.

Question: can this setup cause any damage?
Question: I assume this provides my TV only with Mono (not stereo) sound?

Question: Is this another way to connect (without running additional cables!) that might give me stereo sound on the TV?

As you can tell, I'm a real novice, so any advice would be most appreciated. Thanks.

Digital RCA cables and analog RCA cables are pretty much the same thing. Some people say that digital cables are specifically designed for 75 ohm impedance and that audio cables are not. I spent a fair amount of time reading up on the topic, and I am not convinced it should matter in most cases.

AND you are going the less restrictive way. In other words, audio should not care about the 75 ohm impedance as much as digital does.

As for options, there's always wireless AV senders. My 2.4 Ghz unit is not a promising solution. The 5 Ghz senders have better reviews, you can look at them on amazon.com.

Is the problem that your new receiver doesn't have a digital coax cable output, only optical?

If so, and if you would rather stick with digital sound, look into optical-coax converters, such as http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...seq=1&format=2

This inexpensive device will convert a digital optical cable to the digital coax cable that's run through your walls, and you'll get your stereo sound back, rather than the analog mono you're getting now.
