He played with the remote, called in the office a few times to get some ideas, and even replaced my new box with a newer 3090 box. But predictably, no DD5.1. I said, well perhaps a setting in the service mode diagnostics screen needs to get enabled. He said there was no such thing. I showed him the diagnostics screens (and how to get into it) and he was perplexed. He had no idea what any of it was (nor what AC-3 over HDMI meant).
He ended the session by saying "I don't think these new DVR boxes are capable of AC-3, you should try getting a non DVR box, like the 4250, and see if that works for you"
My cable fee hard at work folks...
I am still at a loss as to what your issue might be... did you also state previously that you also had no luck with an 8300HD(C) either? There are a multitude of folks, myself included, that are running a similar configuration with no issue, with either type of box. Any
of these configurations yield DD/AC3 audio into my AVR (Yes, I have tried them all):
STB <<font size="1">HDMI
> AVR <<font size="1">HDMI>TVSTB <<font size="1">HDMI
> AVR <<font size="1">HDMI>TVSTB AVRSTB <<font size="1">HDMI> AVR <<font size="1">HDMI>TVSTB AVRSTB TVSTB AVRSTB TVSTB AVRSTB TVSTB AVRSTB TVSTB AVRSTB AVR TVSTB AVRSTB AVR TVSTB AVRSTB AVR TVSTB AVRSTB AVR TVSTB AVR
Only the first one requires
enabling "AC3 OVER HDMI" in the diagnostics menu. That configuration also requires the the audio configuration in the Settings menu to be set to HDMI.
For all of the others, the "AC3 OVER HDMI" setting doesn't matter and the audio configuration in settings menu should be set to DD/AC3.
In the second and third configurations, the AVR's digital audio select function can be freely switched between HDMI and COAX/OPTICAL with DD/AC3 audio intact either way.
With so many way to make it successfully work... I am having difficulty understanding what is NOT working in your setup. With the same issue with multiple 3090s and 8300s, I really do not believe that it is an STB issue. BTW, I have had this working with both an 8300HDC and the 3090, with two different Onkyo AVRs (TX-SR876 and TX-NR801 - obviously no HDMI through the 801).
