Samsung 3090/3270 HD-DVR Thread - Page 28

TWC Austin upgraded the software on my Sansung 3270 to 4.5.7.3 this week and the fast forward works great now! Not sure what else they fixed.
I just got the SMT-H3090 and it's driving me crazy. After watching a recorded program, I get no cable signal unless I switch the channel back and forth a few times - from the guide. And this only works if nothing is being recorded. If the DVR is recording, I cannot watch live TV at all. I hate this machine. Does anyone else have this problem? I don't want to reprogram another DVR. Please tell me it's just a setting.
This bug happens on all ODN boxes that are running v4.0.2_4. Time Warner is aware of that bug, and are fixing it, but it's not Samsung specific.
Phew. I get quicker, better, more informed answers here than from TWC. (I'm in NYC.) How do I know what version of the software my box is running?
Oh wait - I think possibly I just asked a dumb question because the answer (on where to get the software version) is at the start of this thread. Sorry. I'll check that out.

Do I need to make a report to TMC, or they already know all they need to know about this?

This is not the version my box is running. I'm running V4.5.7.3 (V2024). I'm constantly having to reboot the box after using the DVR. It happens if I watch a recording then stop it rather than delete it. I need to call them.
v4.5.7.3 and v2024 are the RTOS and middleware. ODN v4.0.2_4 is the guide application that runs on top of the middleware and RTOS. Yes that is a known bug.

How do I know if my box is running ODN v4.0.2_4?

I had a big problem yesterday. I had the usual live TV problem when I stopped and saved a recording. I rebooted the STB but this time it didn't fix it - still could not watch live TV. So I rebooted again and the box got caught in an endless rebooting loop. Every time it got to E13 I saw a message that said "app requested STB reboot". I called TWC and was told there was a problem in my area that they were working on. Since the problem in my area has been fixed (I got a phone call), I haven't had the stop-save-freeze problem (so far!). I'm hoping that's over - time will tell.

From the remote, press and hold [Select] for 5-7 seconds, then release and immediately press [Down]. This will bring up the ODN diagnostics pages. The ODN version is right on the first page... something like the third or fourth item from the bottom.

BTW, if you substitute [Up] instead of down after holding [Select], the box will enter the Samsung hardware diagnostics. In there you can read signal levels, S/N, read your display's (or AVR's) EDID information, remotely reboot the box, etc, etc.

[Select] then [Up] works, but not [Select] then [Down]. The latter does not bring up anything for me.

I've been getting it on VOD channels as well.

Just got a Panny plasma and TW Samsung 3270 a couple weeks ago. I have the HDMI out from the box going to the TV and the optical out going to a DAC then into a preamp for my stereo. Everything was working fine.

Then last night i went into service menu of the TV to see how many hours i have on it (was running a break in dvd). I saw that i had 96 hours on the set and turned it off. When i turned it back on I got the message that "HDCP authorization failed, HDMI port is disabled."

So now i get video from HDMI to the TV but no audio. I also get no audio from the 3270's optical output, nothing but a bunch of "ticking" noises. Not sure what the heck happened. Unplugged the tv and box overnight and still no sound at all.

I just discovered this thread so I'll read some more to see what i can find.

I would suspect your cable company of pushing new software. That's what happened to me that suddenly "broke" the HDMI out on my cable box. They pushed new software on October 16th (TWC, NYC) that broke the HDMI on my Scientific America box. After that, they brought me the Samsung box.

My live TV problem on the Samsung box stopped for a while after the fixed a problems outside (an amplifier, I was told), but resumed after DST switched to ST). First I lost *all* my DVR programming. Well, the programming stayed, but didn't work. I had to delete it all and add it in again. Then last night the live TV froze again when I stopped and saved a recorded program, and I had to reboot to watch live TV again. Actually, to be accurate, it was the STB that froze, not the TV.

Now at least I know it's not the box - it's TWC problems outside.

The 32xx series Samsungs are notoriously flaky with HDMI handshaking. As a start, make sure that you always turn the TV on before you turn on the box (this is always the correct order, but many devices do not care so much... the 32xx definitely does). If you are using the TW supplied Synergy remote, this means that you cannot use the All Power button to turn on the system... you must press [TV] then [CBL] separately, and in that order. If you have a programmable remote such as a Harmony, change the power-on order so that the TV is first.

Thanks jcalabria...i will give that a shot.

I have an interesting problem. So I wanted to delete all of my recorded shows from my DVR so I tried to get into the secret menu with the password but the password 3090 does not work for me. Now this would be fine and I would do it by hand but I called time warner instead and the supervisor sent out a reboot to my box which forced my box to format its harddrive. Then when the box booted back up it no longer has the mystro software on it. When I hit guide it comes to the samsung very basic guide. There is nothing that says time warner cable anymore. If I could get into the diagnostics I could fix my problem by performing a reset, but I don't know the password. I called time warner back and the only option they gave me was to return the cable box and get another one. I have the 3270 and its been the best dvr box I have had....now I am gonna end up with a crap dvr box. So my question is number 1 does anyone know the password or code for the diagnostics? and number 2 if I go to return my box and they do not have the 3270 what is the best dvr box to get?

Have you tried repeated reboots? (disconnect power for a minute or two and reconnect). I can't imagine that there isn't something they can do remotely to force a DL of Navigator to your box, seems like a lazy CSR to me. BTW I have a 3270 as well and I like it a lot, especially after hearing some of the complaints about other DVRs with Navigator.

I am using brighthouse cable in florida, and have a SMT-H3090. I appologize if this is already mentioned, I must admit I skimmed many of the pages in this thread and may have missed it.

I have gone through several of these boxes, after having a scientific atlanta hd8300 I think it was.......and first think there is more pixelation noticed more during fast moving video.......noticed most ofter perhaps during comercials in the samsung box.

With all of the samsung units I have exchanged my biggest complaint or problem seems to be that all of sudden, it will stop recording many, but not all of my scheduled recording shows, even though the show is still on.

Is there a fix for this? Do others have the same problem?

(I did note comment on first page about failure to record programs)

I have had several occasions where I came home ready to watch something that was supposed to be recorded, only to find out it had not been. You cannot seem to rely on these boxes to record anything, even if it has successfully done so for a few weeks, same time, same channel.

The 3 or 4 units I returned all had bigger dvr related problems as well. One would lock up if in pause mode for several minutes.

One would not show recorded programs without a reboot.

I am currently using software version V4.5.7.3 (V2024)
Rom version 1.11

I have a samsung 3270 box. No matter what channel i am on, when i hit the info button on my tv it says it is receiving a 480i signal (if i play a dvd it says 480p). I go to an HD channel and still says 480i? I'm in the display status STB submenu and it says the HD Output resolution is 720x480i...the same as the SD output resolution. Is this correct? Sounds stupid but I have no idea if i am watching HD or not now haha. Is there any way for me to check?
For HDMI go into the guide settings by hitting setting on the remote, select display, and select output resolution. Then you can enable it to 1080i, 720p or any resolution inbetween that is HD. For HDMI you can have it auto detect, and watch the HD channels as well.

You have to watch HD programming in order to get HD.

Thanks you are the man...that was it. Only 480i was selected in the display output menu. I selected 1080i and now when viewing an HD channel the tv shows it is getting a 1080i signal.

Got updated Sunday night. So now I have the same as No. Carolina folks in So Cal.:

TWC SMT-3270 DVR, ODN 4.0.2_4 Samsung FW 4.5.7.3

Go figure, the dates of the software are now within a couple months of current date instead of 1+ years old as they have always been. Got 2 updates in the last 3 months.

I need to do some more use, but the FF/RW seems A LOT smoother and may not be worse than the SA 8300HD now. I have kept both unsure which to keep for the long term. The 8300 may be going back soon. /Dan

So does anyone like these boxes or Time Warner? Or would they prefer another box? I have a 3270 with the latest load and have had lots of issues.

Recordings not starting on time; it'll start recording in the last 20m of the show.

It has recorded the wrong channel for a show; one time it was the preview channel it recorded.

I'm about done with cable service, this stuff is so antiquated. My 1998 Sony satellite receiver had a better guide, it even had transparent menus. The TW guide is a joke, the sort/search menu is a joke.

For example: your in the mood to watch a science fiction movie now. You want to see what's on now, so you search by category->movies->SCIFI ....... and .... you get a list of crap on in the next few days, How the hell is that useful.

Is it me, or is this a pathetic attempt at video service? I don't see how they haven't been able to match what TIVO did 7 years ago, and what Sony/RCA and others did many many years ago.

Hire some competent programmers and GFX designers. It's obvious the ones they have in-house aren't top notch.

U-verse keeps looking better and better, or maybe it's time to go back to satellite.

...

Then to top things off Time Warner introduces a web based DVR manager. It's hasn't even been usable much, the service is sluggish and full of bugs. I don't know why they won't fix what's already broken before adding more junk software in. I will say I did have one day were it worked OK, OK being it took 60 seconds or so to get to my scheduled recordings.

I've been touring the offerings of our local TWC's various cable boxes lately. Most recently landed on the 3270 after having multiple 8200HD and an 8200HDC. The HDC is atrociously bad. The Samsung 3270 is actually responsive and has much better picture/sound. The one thing that annoys me is that the banner is not correct for DVR playback. It tends to either show the title but not time remaining or shows current info for whatever station the device was tuned to before starting DVR playback. Anyone have a workaround?

I had that specific problem a while back on my 3270 and discovered that rebooting fixed it. What ver Navigator are you running?

That fixed it. Thanks.

Surprised the sw doesn't either reboot itself or notify the user its required...

Dude, between the geniuses at Samsung and TW, are you surprised? Both these companies are well known for crappy implementation.

I too would like a nice new UI, but then it might piss off people who are used to Navigator. The problem with Navigator is that it has to run on LCD STB's. LCD meaning Lowest common Denominator aka Pioneer and SA 2000 STB's. I think ODN is a Java port of MDN which was made for older boxes. With TWC rebranding themselves, then it might be a good idea to give Navigator a new look.

I did see an article that TWC was going to improve the Search function such as VOD search, but knowing TWC it would sound like VOD title search. This article did mention that the VOD screen would show movie posters but I think thats for ODN.
