Looking at the DVR cabling diagram, pg 15 of the manual, does that really make sense? If the OPT2 IN comes from the DVR and the OPT2 OUT goes to the DVR and contains only the OPT2 in, what audio does the DVR record?

I would expect the OPT2 OUT to contain digital audio from any of the digital audio inputs, except OPT2 IN. (I'm not sure I've tried this on my AVR.) Similar to the video downscaling questions, it makes sense that HDMI audio would not be fed to the digital audio out for both technical and HDCP reasons.
As regards the warning in the manual that the OPT2 OUT and OPT2 IN must be connected to the same device, my take is that this is intended to avoid creating a feedback loop.
