I figured it out, I searched and found it. I never knew you had to save quick select settings, I also never knew you could set a quick select just by holding it either. Every time I set a quick select I had to go deep in the menu to do so.

I connect my cable box directly to my tv via hdmi. HOwver, if I choose dolby sound on the cable box, the sound on my tv goes blank. This is not a problem when I am watching tv using my surround sound as I also have an optical cable going from the cable box to my 1910. However, when I am just watching tv, there is no sound. I think its becuase my tv cannot decode dolby. I prefer to have dolby setting enabled becuase it affects not just the hdmi sound but also the sound going to my receiver. IN other words when I am watching tv program like the super bowl and using my surround, I want dolby surround instead of Pro logic (without having to go in the menu everytime to switch dolby off and on)

So my obvious solution is to send a regular rca stereo cables from my cable box to my tv to provide stereo sound .

is there a difference between the stereo sound that would be passed through the Hdmi cable and that of the regular rca cable?
^No, I doubt you'll hear any difference in the SQ coming out of the TV speakers. Go for it.
Looks like it is the HDMI coming from my cable box. I tried hooking it up straight to a tv and nothing. So either it is the cable box HDMI port or the tv's. Going to take the box in and switch it out to see what happens. Update later.

I had made a separate post about this in the PS3 area, however this area might be more suitable.

When the PS3 is outputting 3/2/.1 and 3/4/.1 PCM or Dolby Digital all I get is sub-bass and none of the other speakers are emitting any sound. This happens only to games and the xmb (the orchestra warm-up sound is heard) but not the context clicks. Movies, both DVDs and Blurays play perfectly!

Assuming it may be an HDMI audio transport issue, I used an optical cable (tos-link) for testing. Again the same issue arose. Only sub-bass is coming through the woofer.

Now on the Denon (1910) I switched the HDMI mode from "amp" to "tv" bypassing the amp and turned the volume up on the television, doing so, the audio came out perfectly on the tv. Of course this is being converted to stereo. I also did 5-Ch Stereo simulation on the Denon and again the sound would work.

I have tested other hardware with the Denon to make sure the Denon is not at fault. No problems.

Again, this all started with Playstation 3 Firmware 3.50. Until then these issues didn't exist.

OK, very new to this and I have spent several days reviewing threads and looking at Batpigs doc and I am still at a lost....

Had my system "professionally" installed awhile back(15 months) and have lived with this intermittent problem for awhile and I am now trying to solve it...with your help, hopefully.

PROBLEM: While viewing tv from my directv recv, audio stops. This typically happens after about an hour of viewing and then about every hour. Picture continues to play. If I switch to another source and back, the sound comes back. Same behavior if a stream netflix through my bluray. If I pause/play audio comes back. I do not recall having this happen with a DVD or a bluray, but i could be wrong.

Set up:
Direct tv/LG Bluray to the Denon AVR 790 via HDMI. All equipment on a rack in a spare room. Denon to Balun to cat5e for 30ish feet to balun to HDMI to Panasonic Ae4000 projector.

I have read several posts about long runs of HDMI and issues running HDMI over Cat5e, but the picture is rock solid and the audio does not even go to the Cat5e, correct...it just goes directly to my speakers which is a 5.1 set up.

Also, Batpig mentions options about turning off HDMI control and Power Off Control, but I could not find those options on the denon on screen menu.

I am sure I am leaving out details so please let me know what other info may be needed.

Any settings or ideas I should do to help troubleshoot or resolve the audio cut outs?

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Give the HDMI reset a try.

Thanks...will give that a try and will report back. Thanks again!

The sound setup was working for me (with lots of help from friends here at avsforum), and I'd turned off my subwoofer for a while. Today, I tried to watch movie with subwoofer on, I noticed that no sound was coming through the subwoofer. I've my AVR790 connected to ED A2-300 using the subwoofer out of AVR to "in" in the A2-300. The light on my subwoofer turns "RED" when on and changes to "GREEN" when it receives signal from the receiver. In this case, the light doesn't turn green anymore. So, I'm assuming Denon is not sending any signal to sub? I tried to do Audyssey setup and when it gets to subwoofer, it seems like it couldn't find it, so asks me to retry. Do you think I've a bad subwoofer or Denon setup is not properly done? Thanks for all ur help in advance... let me know if I need to be more detail on the information I've provide... thanks.

If the AVR is trying to send a test signal, it's either a bad digital cable or you need to turn the sub to "ON" vice "AUTO" (if this is possible). Pull the cable from the LFE pre-out on the AVR and rub your finger over it with the sub on. If you get static from the sub, the cable is fine .. if not, replace the cable.

hello to all i am new here hoping to get some help with my avr790. I have a satellite box going through the denon to my my tv. The denon is always on when i watch tv i never use the tv speakers. I have it set up so that when i hit power on the satellite remote for the tv the denon automatically turns on with it( and off) My tv is a toshiba with REGZA link. For some reason when i watch a dvd(hooked up to denon via hdmi1) when i switch the denon back to sat/cable to watch tv again the REGZA link feature acts up. the denon no longer turns on/off with the tv and the tv says tv volume instead of amplifier volume when i turn it up and down. when it happened before i corrected it by simply turning the tv or the denon on or off before or after one another, i cant remember exactly. but now its happened again and i cant fix it. has anyone experienced anything like this? I cant tell which unit is causing the problem, the tv has 2 power options
1,tv auto power on--- if a regza link device is turned on, the tv automatically turns on
2, auto standby---if the tv is turned off, the tv will send a message to turn off all of the regza link devices connected to the tv
I keep both these on in the tv settings and i turn on the power off control on in the denon. all settings are still there but i cant get it to work right. Ive turned each unit on and off a million times in different sequences and reset the denon processor. I really think its the denon doing it because it happens after i use the dvd player and switch the denon to dvd input, funny thing is though that the tv volume display changes as well for the amp. I dont know its so confusing at this point to me. What should I do?? I had it working again before I would really appreciate some help with this.
thanks in advance!!

It would seem the DVD player is breaking the link. Does it also have an HDMI-CEC setting? Perhaps if you turn it off?
it does, but i disconnected it from the denon and put it straight to the tv and still no luck
post #8354 of 9204
If the DVD is no longer connected to the AVR, you may want to try the HDMI Reset with the cable box, AVR, and TV (ie. while all powered on pull the HDMI cables, power all off, replug the HDMI cables and power all on again in this order, TV, AVR, cable box).
i unplugged the 2 hdmi's and powered everything off. plugged them back in and powered up in that sequence and the amplifier volume control works now but not the power off feature. should the tv settings be on and the denons settings off? or the other way around? or should both units settings be on? Another note, the sat receiver always has a video signal on even when i turn it off, theres always a message floating around the screen. could this be screwing it up?
Possibly. Some sources can be finnicky like this. You'll just have to experiment with various settings until you get it to work correctly.

Hey all,

I have my PS3 slim bitstreaming audio over HDMI to my 1910. When I watch Blu-rays, my 1910's blue lights turn on to signify an HD audio signal, and all is well in the world.

So my question is, what should my 1910 display say if I am getting full sound potential out of Black Ops (or any other game for that matter)? Every time I play the game, be it on single player or multiplayer, my 1910 just says "MULTI CH IN." I know this means the 1910 is getting a PCM signal, but am a little confused as to why, since all the other Blu-rays bitstream the audio for the 1910 to decode. I guess my real question is, is it normal for the 1910 to read "MULTI CH IN" when playing a PS3 game, and am I getting all the sound I signed up for?

Thanks.
^^
Some PS3 games only have the uncompressed PCM audio track stored, therefore you'll only see "Mult Ch In" although still getting the same quality DD/DTS audio. However, just as when playing a BD, always check the game itself to see if the compressed DD/DTS tracks are available as well if you want to select that track instead.

Perfect... thanks a lot jdsmoothie, thought it might be something like that.

I've tried every which way possible to set it. I spent some time on the phone with denon, they told me it has to be the tv. So I called Toshiba, they had me try their way and still no luck. I dont know what to do now besides take a huge loss and trade it in to Best Buy torwards a new one?

The alternative is to keep all your equipment but scrap HDMI-CEC (which is unreliable as you have found!) and instead invest in a good universal remote it will control all the input switching for you, and much more reliably.

Hooked up the replacement box and everything works great. The HDMI out on the cable box was the culprit.

I kinda thought it was the sat. box messing with it, but even if the denon's off it 's set to hdmi3 for standby.
Talking universal remotes, do a lot of people use a "Harmony" brand remote for these denon's?

Whenever i run audyssey on my 1910, it sets my front tower speakers to large, which seems to disable the sub. I am only using 2 tower speakers and a powered sub. When it does the tests, i can hear the sub cycle each time. What am I doing wrong? Thanks
post #8365 of 9204
Nothing. The Denon detects your front mains can handle a <50hz freq so sets them to LARGE. You have two choices ....

(a) Leave them as LARGE, raise their crossovers to 80hz and change the sub setting to LFE+Main

or

(b) Reset them to SMALL, raise their crossover to 80hz (no sub setting change required).

Unless you prefer more bass, option (b) is the recommended setting.

This is pretty typical behavior of Audyssey. After it runs, set the FR and FL speakers to small, and put the bass setting at LFE+MAIN. Raise the crossover to 120Hz and you should be all set. Obviously, before you do any of this, make sure your subwoofer is connected properly.

Also bear in mind that you might have to raise the channel level for the sub after the fact.

I have a pair of Polk Monitor 60s and I have to reset them to small every time I run Audyssey.
Oop, sorry, disregard my LFE+MAIN statement on this one. Doens't really make a difference. Anyway JDS is pretty good at this stuff so listen to him.
Thank you for the quick help!
just to make sure...
under the crossover freq menu, set the front setting to 80hz

under bass setting set sw mode to lfe+main
set lpf for lfe : 120hz

just double checking....

also...where is the adjustment to raise the sub level....i thought it had one someplace in the menu (+-12)????
If front speakers are set to small, LFE/LFE+MAIN doesn't matter. Only matters if front speakers are set to large (if you don't have a subwoofer). Yes to everything else.

Check the "Channel Level" sub-menu in speaker setup for speaker levels.
