Monsters, Inc.(JPN) comparison *PIX* - Page 4

What a jaw dropper this movie was in reference to audio and video. I give it 5 stars on both aspects. This is by far the my best blu ray and demo blu ray for now. The best $55.00 spent for an import.

1536x922 would be 1.66 AR... or were the pixels not square?

I'm wondering "how" it would be re-rendered at a higher resolution -- Wouldn't that just be upscaling? If not, wouldn't the original elements need to have been created at a higher resolution, and then down-scaled and rendered? Guess I need to fiind more sources to see how its done.

Same with Wall-E. I always said Wall-E was intentionally soft and not very impressive for a CGI movie, in regard to sharpness and detail.

Agree...

THey knew that wouldn't have been recognized in most other countries, so they changed it to a shot of fireworks, I believe.

I would bet the US release will look like the caps from the original version.

I see that the playlist shows multiple M2TS files used for the movie. Could they be using branching for these shots like all the language localizations done on the Wall-E Blu-ray?

Or was Wall-E done using "angles", I can't recall.

Crikey I really dont remember the DVD looking that bad! I wonder if our PAL release over here in the UK had slightly more detail?

I have been away for awhile. Last I knew was that Blu players couldnt play import discs.

I would love to get this Japaneese disc, is it not region coded then? Or will my old Samsung 1400 not play it?

Thanks for catching me up again.

Doesn't matter if it has region coding. Japan is in the same region as the Americas.

Hoping for someone to do a custom cover for this one.

This movie is lacking in grain.

I can't watch a movie with no grain.

I want grain that it feels like you are swimming in it.

Looks freakin awesome.

And hopefully with the quality of the Jap version.

I heard they were going more for a 1970's anamorphic film look. And they got pretty close to it.

Mr Ian B

Just received my copy for Yes Asia - can't wait to see it later today!

hmv is $48 shipped now.

i didnt care...$42 for $48 what difference does it make.

better to spend that than wait a year
im going to wait. That way i get text instead of icons. Alot of the puns and jokes are lost with the japanese version and icons

Interesting. If you overlay these two captures and a/b them, it's obvious this is more than just a resolution change. If you look at the green monster, there are actually spots that are much more visible on the SD version than the HD. Almost as if they've changed the light modeling, or even the textures themselves. And the monster on the left is clearly bluer in the SD version, and pinker in the HD version.

OK. I'm lost and hoping someone can help me. I'm having trouble going through the Japanese menus. I'm trying to access just the movie without the commentary. Which disk is it on and where on the menu is it? Thanks.

it's funny how BD can make a movie look perfect, yet worse - in that, it looks so much more like CGI when it's not slightly blurred
post #112 of 268
Stunning... Must double dip.

As for the color changes that Darin points out... Zylon do you note that in similar scenes with the same characters?

Are we seeing a SD-HD color space conversion issue? The first capture looks blue oversaturated. Odd - new reference source?

Agree...

Remember, this is a Digital Render. If you have say a ball that is 40 inches by 40 inches and you render it a 1024 x 768 It will have an x amount of pixels and it it is rendered at 1920 x 1080 it will have obviously more pixels but it will still be a 40in by 40 in ball so it is not an upscale, it is just a rerender with more information.

I prefer Sully tinted more Blue as opposed to Green.
(Feel free to blame my uncalibrated computer moniter on this statement, whether your display is conveying the same results or not. )

Intended/Original Colorspacing and Temperature may become an increasing concern, after this disc and Open Range.

Should there be a ICST/OCST Thread Soon? (Edit: I'm aware this would fall under the Artistic Intent thread.)

it actually looks awesome on a 100" screen :-)

these shots make it look very CGI, (hey movie is 8 years old) but once you see it in 1080p action on a big screen... looks fantastic...

Just watched it on my 126" screen and it looked and sounded great. Plus one for a title to import.

Large group of people. Even in this thread people are drooling.

I am just wondering why the DVD looks so bad. Why can't we have PS3 upscaled DVD screenshots, these PC upscaled things look terrible. Somebody with a PS3 will not see such a big jump in quality.
