Ok, great, that is good to know. Do you have to open up a ticket or anything or could I just walk in to an authorized place with the right equipment and ask them to do it and they do all the necessary paperwork?

If you can find a local shop that can do the firmware installation (as not all can), then you would provide them with the AVR and your receipt showing the date and that you purchased from an Authorized Vendor. The repair shop would then take care of the paperwork to get the repair authorization from Denon to complete the repair.

Is that something that happens real-time, or will I have to leave the receiver with them a couple days? Reason I ask is because I believe there is a shop about an hour from me that could do all of this and I could make a day trip out there since they have a big mall in the area, but I am not going to try all the way out there to find out I have to leave it anyway.

Thanks again for the input.

Your best bet is to just call them and ask. A guy in the 1910 thread was able to have them do it while he waited. Check here for the center nearest you.

When I had my firmware upgrade done I had to leave it for 3 weeks. I bitched, but there was only 2 places I could take it and this was the only one that answered my emails.

I'm the guy from the 1910 thread. Definitely call. I called and asked very nicely and and they agreed to let me bring it in at a specific time. I left, went and had lunch, and came back and it was done.

how much of a bad idea is it to take the legs off the receiver so that I may get it into the spot I would like it?
will this cause the unit to overheat too much?

if the spot is that tight, you don't want to put the receiver there in the first place. you should have at least 2-3" of vertical room to spare for ventilation.

ok, how about with the legs on, that's 3/4 of an inch on the bottom, and an 1" 1/2 of clearance on the top?
would this be sufficiant?

if the front and back are open so there is ventilation, then it's probably fine.

if that's going in an enclosed cabinet, so there will be no airflow, then it's probably too tight.

i cant display the menu on my tv when i hooked the receiver up to it. i have hdmi cable in the correct spots. when i hit the menu button, i do see the screen flicker, but it does no display anything. what am i doing wrong?
Although the OSD settings default to ON (p.28), check to make sure that is the case. Can your TV accept a 480i signal over HDMI? If your TV is not able to receive a 480i signal, the AVR should deinterlace it to 480p. If you still cannot get it to display, try resetting the microprocessor (p. 57).

Is there an eletronics-expo coupon code that actually works right now? I found one that is up to 30% off Audio/HT stuff, but when I apply it, it doesn't work and I didn't notice Denon listed in the exlusions.

Thanks!

Much easier to just call and ask them ....
Call and ask or chat them up. I will hopefully be ordering my 1610 from them in a few days as soon as I get paid for a side job.

Can you elaborate on this? Do you mean is it set to a source that is displaying a picture?

Maybe I misunderstood you, but I can get the OSD with no video inputs hooked up and just an HDMI cable to the TV.

Did you sign in to amazon? If you simply add the code and update nothing will happen...you must take it the next step and head towards checkout. Had the same problem.

Some items on there website actually update without having to go to your cart like that. For some reason not all the products they sell do. Still always best to chat or call. They will work out awesome deals for you.

Really? ... my mistake then, was thinking it needed a source.

One more question. Does anyone know if Bing CashBack will work if you use a coupon code at Electronics-Expo? It looks like bing cashback is at 6.3% for electronics-expo so that could make for a pretty sweet deal for the 1610 or even the 1910.
This is one of those questions that can easily be answered by using the "Search This Thread" button (upper right of webpage) and keyword "bing" so you can read other poster's experience when using BING cashback.

Thanks. I didn't even realize that feature was there. Looking quickly, I saw one person that had luck using a coupon code and bing. I will do a little more digging, but it looks like it is possible.

EDIT: There weren't very many results (I think 6 total), but it does look like one person got it to work with a coupon code and the Bing cashback.

I used the coupon and bing and it worked for me

Awesome, thanks! Now I just have to figure out if the 1910 is worth $80 more than the 1610 in the long run. Right now I only have a 5.1 setup, but if we move anytime soon and my new room allows for a 7.1 there is a chance I would upgrade to 7.1 but I am not sure when that would happen.

The other possibility is I could bi-amp my Monitor 60's if I went with the 1910. Decisions, decisions.
You're less likely to achieve any real benefit using the passive "bi-amp" feature of the 1910. Rather you would benefit more using the surround back terminals for either Front Height speakers or placing speakers in another room.

That is good to know. Do you have any experience with Front Height speakers? Do they really add much? I am torn about what to do. I don't want to spend the $80 more and never use the 7.1, but at the same time, I don't want to not spend it and then wish I had.

The other thing I am a little nervous about is that the 1610 is rated at 75x5 and the 1910 at 90x7. I know ratings don't mean a heck of a lot, but since it is within the same manufcaturer I am assuming the use the same rating standards so I wonder if the 1910 is worth it for the additional 15W per channel.
You'll never notice the power difference. I suggest spending the $80 as it is a better AVR than the 1610 and will command a higher resale price if/when you sell it. The zone2 speakers is great too. I have deck speakers for when my wife is tanning or I am outside and a movie or TV is being watched inside at the same time.
+1

Wattage isn't going to make any difference at average volume. Some folks that have tried the Front Height say they add much (although really depends on whether the audio content favors them) while others say not so much. In most cases, space wise, the Front Height are much easier to add rather than surround rear speakers in a 7.1 setup. The 1910 offers the option to upgrade to choose should you decide at some point in the future to add additional speakers. Even if you don't add Zone 2 speakers, with a Zone 2 you can add a set of wireless headphones and get the benefit of "mobile" Zone 2 speakers.

Also keep in mind though that if you really NEVER see yourself adding speakers to a Zone 2 (wireless or otherwise), then with the 1610 and a $50 used stereo amp you can accomplish either 7.1 or Front Height as well.

Equipment:
Toshiba BDX2000
Denon 590 Main Ver # = 00.89, Sub Ver# = 00.24
HDMI connection

Long story short... I cannot seem to get anything but Dolby Digitial 5.1 on my receiver when it comes to Blu-Ray.

I can, if allowed to select in the options menu, change formats to DTS with DVDs.

An example is the Dark Night, I want to listen to TrueHD but it will only show Dolby D despite pressing the "STD" button.

I've followed to a "t" the directions from the bdx2000 manual to get TrueHD but still nothing.

Some things of note:
The bdx2000 manual mentions that it puts out the TrueHD with bitstream or LPCM

Thanks for any help or direction!
