Hey guys.. I'm a first time poster, so I apologize if someone else dealt with this issue, but my searches aren't turning up much.

It seems that the digital component (both HDMI and optical audio) on my AVR 590 have ceased to function.

Ever since setting up the receiver with my Samsung 50" plasma, and comcast/fios service, the video signal would intermittently black out, while the audio continued to play. This didn't happen on my PS3.

Now, it's completely gone. No audio, no video. The Cablebox usually says "dvi" when it detects the TV/HDMI connection, but it no longer says that. I can't even get optical audio to play.

I am just a month past the 2 year warranty... Do any of you have any experience on whether Denon would still help me out and repair it without charging me? I can't afford anything expensive, as I'm still paying off this receiver and TV on a bestbuy credit card (no lectures on financial responsibility, please).

Or does anyone know of anything else we can do? The microprocessor reset doesn't do a thing, and denon's help hasn't provided any assistance other than suggest I take it to a service center.

Your post is unclear. Does the PS3 work now and the Fios box doesn't or are you saying that no input works at all? If the latter, Denon has been known to extend the warranty a couple of months so give them a call again and see if they will do so in your case.

sorry. None of the digital Ports work at all, no matter what's hooked in.

Hi. There are a ton of pages here, and I've glanced at a few but haven't seen my problem so I apologize in advance if it has been asked.

I have an AVR-590 that I purchased a few years ago. It was working fine until last night when I was trying to make an old Mac Mini into a Media Server. I successfully mapped Optical Audio 1 to HDMI 2 and had everything working.

Then suddenly, no audio. I thought there was a problem w/ my Mini, so changed to HDMI-1 (DirecTV). Nothing. I then went to HDMI-3 (my Blu-ray player), and again, nothing. I could get absolutely no audio from any source.

So, assuming I messed something up, I decided to reset to Factory Settings (e.g., p57). I did that, but not only did it not solve the problem, but some of my menu items went away. Specifically, the main menu now has:
  1. Parameter
  2. Information
  3. .
  4. Manual Setup
  5. Input Setup
Item #3 is missing. According to the owner's manual, it should say 'Auto Setup', but there is no option 3. When I go into sub-menus, they are also missing items (one of them has only 2., 5., 6.).

I unplugged it & left it overnight (as some others here have done), but still no sound & still a messed up menu.

So, short of taking it to a service center (closest is Baltimore, MD as Crutchfield only services units they sell, and I bought it at Best Buy), any suggestions?

Thanks.

Hi dan.everest, you could try blowing compressed air into headphone jack or plug/unplug a set of headphones a few times.

Thanks. Yeah, I saw that suggestion earlier & plan to give that a try this weekend. I'm still at a loss on the missing menu items, but hopefully a call to customer support tonight will shed some light on it.

I will update if/when I get any answers.

"AUTO SETUP" is likely missing from the menu because the unit thinks a headphone is plugged into the headphone jack ... resolve that (compressed air suggestion above) and the item will appear.
Unbelievable. I get home tonight & grab a can of compressed air (my wife had some for cleaning out the Roomba). I blow some in to the headphone jack, turn it on, and voila! Item #3 from the menu comes back ('Auto Setup').

I then hook it back up to everything, and now it all works fine.

Thanks a bunch guys as you just saved me $500. Maybe I'll drop the $25 for a year subscription for this forum even though I'll probably never use it...at least until I have another problem...

Hey guys,

Long time lurker here, learned alot about the 1610 already from all of you, but i've come across something that I just can't seem to get working.

I've got my PS3 set up to the HDMI input (HDP) via an HDMI cable.
And I've got an COAX antenna cable plugged into the FM Antenna of the system.

Now I am struggling to do the following:
- Play video from PS3 video
- Listen to FM radio while doing this

V.sel does not let me select the source, nor does Source Select...
My inputs are assigned and no 'source delete' has been added.

Any recommendations?

Thanks in advance for all clarifications regarding this issue!

Video Select will not work with an HDMI source, so also connect the component video cable from the PS3 to the AVR and while listening to the TUNER, use Video Select to select the component video input from the PS3.

Jdsmoothie -

I had made a post on the previous page explaining an issue I'm having with the (I think) HDMI ports on my 1610. This characteristics are a "blown speaker" sound, primarily when I play CD's through my PS3. I have reset the microprocessor per your instructions, rerun Audyssey twice, all to no avail. I really only notice this while playing CD's but I do that a lot, so it's really frustrating. At other insight or points?

Thanks,
Matt

I thought you resolved the issue by setting the AVR to STEREO? No?
Nope, that's not doing it now. :-(

You said you raised the speaker crossovers to 80hz, but you also need to change them from LARGE to SMALL in order for the sub to fire. Ensure ALL speakers are set to SMALL.
^^Ok, Ill do that tonight. Im 99% sure they're under the correct settings, but they may have gotten jacked up when I reset the Microprocessor. I wish the Denon menu would show up on my TV, I hate that I have to use the Denon's screen as the menu.

After running AUTO SETUP, if the AVR sets the speaker crossovers to 40hz, it also set them to LARGE, so the crossover actually has not impact unless the sub setting is changed to LFE+MAIN (which is not recommended). Rather much better to simply set the speaker to SMALL and raise the crossover up to either 60hz or 80hz, whichever you prefer.

Also, your menu display issue got passed over for the audio related issue. What devices to you have connected and have you tried replacing the HDMI cable from the AVR to the TV?

My setup current is:

PS3 via HDMI
Xbox 360 via component
Fisher turntable via phono line in
Time Warner cable box via HDMI

And no, I haven't changed the HDMI cable from ps3 to avr. I'll do that tonight and report back. Thanks for the help. Oh, I'll also verify that the speaker settings are setup correctly.
Ok, my settings were at:

L,R Speaker Size: Small - 80hz x-over
Center: n/a
Rears: Small - 80hz x-over
Subwoofer: Yes

Mode: LFE

SW Crossover: 80Hz

Note I suggested changing the HDMI cable from the "AVR" to the "TV" not from the PS3 to the AVR. So you're not getting the menu display from any of the sources? Also note there is no Phono line in, rather only analog inputs.
Good catch, my bad...turntable via analog input.

Ill change both of the HDMI cables.

To be clear, the speakers break up under higher noises, not the lower bass-y notes. Thanks for the help.

Finally spoke with Denon themselves. Im still under 2-year warranty and the guy at Denon agreed that this is something completely not right. Ill be taking it to the local service center on Monday and getting it repaired.

To follow up, this was not a Denon issue. The default volume on my PS3 was set to +4 somehow. All I had to do was turn that down and it seems to have fixed the issue. Woohoo!

Great! No repair required. Thanks for reporting back.

Hello guys

I have a most annoying problem with my AVR-1610. In movies I have good sound from all my speakers except my center, I have a 5.1 system, (Dynavoice Challenger M-65 EX and a XTZ subwoofer).

I have done the speaker configurations a few times and the settings seems to be good but as soon I watch a movie I have to turn up the volume quite a bit to hear what´s being said.

I watch movies trough a PS3 system.

Appreciate any help
There's a button you can push which cycles through all the gains on each speaker including the subwoofer.

The channel level is the button. See what that says and cycle to until you get to the center channel.

In addition to using the "CH Level" button on the remote to bump up the center channel a few db to suit your preference, also ensure the center speaker is pulled out (if stuck inside a cabinet) to the edge as well as angled up/down as necessary to be pointing directly at your head when seated in the #1 mic position (ie. main listening position). If you do make any speaker placement adjustments, be sure to run AUTO SETUP again.
Hi

Great tip about raising the center with the CH Level button, I have it at +7,5 now and now I hear what´s going on =)

My center speaker is positioned above my 50” television on a slight tilting downwards the sofa so it is clear from any obstacles.

A new questing pops in my head now, should I re-run the auto setup once more or will it just scale down the center adjustments I just made?

Really thankful for all help already received from you guys =)

Making channel level adjustments doesn't require rerunning AUTO SETUP, rather only adding new speakers or repositioning the current ones would.
Auto setup is for distance only, just from my memory, don't quote me.

If you find the dialogue weak, just use channel adjustment, at least that's what I do.
