Odd though that the problem never went away even after I put my 4310 back to factory settings.
Problems only began when I applied the firmware updates which were around July.
I reset the processor (and supposedly all the firmware), but the problem remains. Very strange.
Resetting the microprocessor does not reset or roll back the firmware...
Also, I still have never had any issues with mine, networking or otherwise, and I have done every available firmware update as they have become available.
Sadly, however, many other people have not been as fortunate. The seemingly, vast majority (at least as reported here) of folks have had some kind of glitch, failure or other bad behavior, following a firmware update with their 4310's.
I tried to keep track of this and see if there was a range of S/N's - but, it appeared to be random and I never got a large enough sample size to make any sense of it.
As I've said, I can't ever imagine a time when I will risk it on my unit. Anyway, I'm getting the upgrade bug (again)... so, I'll probably replace my 4310 for a pre/pro & amp combo, this time next year.
Fingers crossed my 4310 doesn't go tits-up before then
Free advice is worth what you pay for it... but, I would seriously (read: SERIOUSLY) recommend not upgrading firmware, unless you have a very specific reason for doing so!
Also, in case anyone browsing through is interested. I have my 4310 up for sale. All original accessories, manuals, and remotes; as well as original box and packaging with original sales receipt. PM me for details if interested.

YMMV.
I've applied every firmware update available and found no problem. My 4310 works flawless as the first day. I bougth it in Dec 2009.

I bought a new AVR-4310 a few days ago. Everything works fine, except for the JPEG picture playback. The pictures are on the NAS server, yet I tried playback from the USB stick, same issue.
I only get 576i to 1080p over HDMI playback. Furthermore, the pictures are stretched and look like CGA graphics, full of pixels, barely recognizable as real pictures. I already reset the micro processor and I did install the latest 1.89 firmware, no change, picture playback is still a complete mess.
I had the AVR-4308 before and the picture playback was perfect.
Is my AVR-4310 broken? I tired to play back the same pictures with the Xbox 360 and the Sony KDL-55EX500, they play both fine so it can't be the picture that is responsible for the AVR-4310 picture playback issue.
The only HDMI setup that I can find is "Vertical Stretch", but this just stretches the image vertically. It does nothing to restore the lost details in the pictures. The photos look like they have been processed with software to cover all information in the picture.
I wrote a mail to the shop where I bought the Denon from and they tell me, Denon does not exchange their broken units, they only repair them.
I think it was a mistake to buy that AVR-4310. It's nothing but trouble so far.
Very strange i must say. Mine seems to be going strong so far , I switched from a elite sc27 to this and have had no problems yet even did the firmware update no problem , it's kinda like anything you may buy, you may have got a lemon, have you tried switching around your hdmi cables?
The pictures were fine when I played them from the NAS with my XBox 360 or with my Sony TV.
I don't get it, when I check the HDMI status while playing back pictures from the NAS with the Denon, it's up converting 576i to 1080p. Why it does not pass through the pictures, I don't have any idea.

Well, that it explains it then. I guess I'll update it to the newest firmware (I unplugged the ethernet cable when it started acting up) and hope for the best.

Go into the source input (HDMI in) and turn off the scaler or change the resolution.
That is the problem, the Network Source does not have a scaler setting. I cannot enable or disable the scaler. The network source does only have a "Play" feature.
Oh I found a "NET/USB" setting with analog scaling. Okay it is turned off. But it does not help at all. Is this the right menu to disable the scaler?
Here is an example. The original picture is 1920x1080, used to calibrate equipment. This is how this picture is played back with the Denon AVR-4310:
And this is the exact same picture, played back directly by my Sony KDL-55EX500 TV using the same NAS server:
The Sony does play back the picture perfectly well, whereas the Denon AVR-4310 does only give me a crappy picture that does not even look close to be called a picture.
I am completely dissatisfied with my Denon AVR-4310 purchase. From my experience (I had the AVR-4308 before, got destroyed by struck of lightning two months ago), Denon did not evolve. Their menu system confused me back in 2007 and in 2010 it is more complex than ever.
The problem is, here in Switzerland, you can't just go to the dealer and get your money back. The customers do not have any rights.

I absolutely agree with you on the menu - I have a 3805 which I found confusing and the 4310 is much worse. I wish I could help you more on this issue - it sounds like just a setting somewhere - but I just not familar with the net/usb functions. I have a HTPC in my theater that is connected to my media server which hosts all my pictures, movies and music so I don't use my 4310 for these. Hopefully someone here will be able to help.

Well, have tested on my setup, using the network with Tversity, and also USB to display pictures and have no issues.
Checked settings and if you turn i/p scaler on then you can play with video settings for output...etc.
I tried with i/p scaler on and off and worked fine both ways.
So not sure what your problem is as cannot replicate. Is it possible there is HDMI handshake issue with the Panasonic.
Try I/P scaling on and set to different video resolutions. I left mine on Auto.
I am using standard pictures not a 1920 X 1080p picture. Have you tried a regular picture and if so is result the same?
My pictures range from 800X600 to 2350 X 1500 and they work perfectly.
If u can download picture somewhere I will upload and test it on my system . 4310 with JVC HD750 projector.
I just purchased a new c550 Sammy Plasma. I'm experiencing audio dropouts. I have Dish vip622, 4310 and the c550 all hooked up through hdmi. None of my NON-hd channels have audio and occasionally the audio will drop out on a hd channel. I've tried switching cables but still no luck.
I can re-hook up my Sony SXRD and everything works fine.
I had a weird experience yesterday when I tried playing a Blu-ray. The player was showing a picture but the Denon AVR-4310 insisted to play analog audio. I know that I did play blu-ray movies perfectly fine a few days ago. It took me 30 minutes to find the hidden menu item in the nested menu structure where I could switch back from analog to digital.
The usability of this product not optimal, everything is way too complex, at least for me.

Yes the result is the same with regular pictures, they are all pixelated to the extreme (no details there anymore) and not high def at all. The HDMI status usually reports 576i to 1080p, the problem seems to be that my Denon does only pick up a 576i signal when it tries to play back pictures.
I can switch the scaler on or off, but it is only analog that is selectable with NET/USB. And the only other option the Aspect which is Full or normal. Full stretches the picture and when I change this setting to not-full, I get a tiny image centered on the TV screen.
This is a good 1920x1080 reference picture, that has convenient onscreen instructions (picture is only show as 576i on my TV, as usual):
hi all, i just finally unboxed my 4310 and finishing setup. i have a few questions that were not very clear in the user manual.
1.) surround modes - my setup is 7.1 and i would like to have the audio directly from each disk played such as true hd, dts, etc. (STANDARD setting), but i would also like to matrix the 2 rear back surrounds. what setting must it be to play everything standard but also put the 2 rears to use?
2.) once i have this setting set, what must i do to save it so it never changes?
3.) after running audyssey, can you make changes to the system such as making the sub +10db (level matching), crossover, etc. without actually turning off audyssey or does this not constitute a MINOR change?

I would appreciate if you could try this on your Denon.
Picture works perfectly at 1080p.
Again, try setting video on USB to 1080p from Auto to see what happens as it looks to me that there may be a handshake issue between 4310 and TV if it only comes up as 576i.
Hmm, nothing works on my AVR-4310. I already tried 1080p, the picture was not okay. It did play back 576i from the USB stick as well, although the picture was not as pixelated as when I play back the sampe picture from the network attached storage.
I also tried a Denon AVR-3310 in the shop. I was not able to stream pictures over the network, yet when playing back pictures from the USB drive, the AVR-3310 has the same flaws as the AVR-4310. The pictures get stretched, the 1920x1080 picture got centered and stretched and was shown with 576i as well, this AVR-3310 was directly hooked up to a Samsung B8000 LED TV, so it is definitively a different TV. Does not look like a Handshake issue to me.
I have brought my AVR-4310 back to the shop and they don't replace it with a new one. They isist on sending it in for repairs. I know exactly what they are going to repair and fix. Nothing. It is always the same when customers report this, no one in the repair center cares and no one can fix it either.
And Denon does not care either, because they integrated this feature similarly in the 3310 and 4310. My 4308 did play back everything fine, the new AVR4310 does not.

thanks.
I have a 7.1 system with 2 side surrounds and 2 backs - I get auto playback of DD, DTS, DTrueHD, DTS-MAHD, etc. with matrix to the sides for 7.1 playback when source is less than 7.1 as follows:
1. Make sure you have turned on Auto Surround Mode in the GUI (I think default is on) go to Manual Setup > Audio Setup > Auto Surrond Mode (pg 38 of manual). Now in the GUI select Surround Mode and make a selection (I use Dolby PL IIx > Cinema). You can toggle and reset these using the STANDARD (STD) button on remote (pages 71 - 74 of manual) and (page 102). It will save these settings automatically and when you turn on it will automatically go the digital source and and matrix to 7.1 - If you have a different source for Music then you can set it up differently or if it is the same source you can simply over-ride it with Stereo button or Standard button.
