Hi i have an old bose system that im wanting to get rid of i already have a sony receiver STR-DG720 and im looking to get new speakers and sub for around $1000 or so what are your recommendations?
In that price range I like the Alpha series from PSB. For 1K you get B1s for the fronts, CLR1 for center, LR1 for rears and Subseries 1 sub. Good luck.

I just put this recommendation in another thread for a guy in an extremely similar situation.

2 pair of Ascend HTM-200 SE monitors and 1 HTM-200 SE center $608 (package discount). They are wall mountable so if you like that aspect of Bose your not compromising.

Dayton C1500K 15" sub kit $320. If you want a real HT experience you need a sub that can move some air. Bose gives you a mid-bass driver as a sub.

i also put in some advice for ascends on there, they are the exact thread i dont see why you made two?

I would also look at the eD package deals for a set of bookshelf speakers and an A3-300 sub(but ultimately you would get waaaay more bang for you buck with a DIY sub as suggested earlier)

Your referring to the PSB Subseries 1 sub? That is an 8" ported sub with a 110w amp, claimed -6 db 36hz, and 106db max output at 100hz.

I don't like it very much as a sub, seems like what you would get from a floor standing speaker with an 8" woofer. It will perform ok in a small room, and is much better then the Bose module. You wont get extension below the mid 30hz range due to its port tuning (response drops below tuning). It isn't capable of moving enough air to be effective down there anyway

The 15" Dayton isn't an ideal sub, but its hard to beat for the price. Its capable of far more output, and will extend much lower in frequency in room. The sealed box shallow roll off will pick up room gain and easily extend into the 20hz range with over 100db (in room should be around 110db).

I don't have nearly the experience that a lot of guys here do, however, for my room/AVR I need some high efficiency speakers and it looks like BIC Acoustech is a good value there. I'm looking at a system similar to this one.

I'm planning on buying everything piece by piece and buying a different sub than the one with this set, but, for about $1k I figured that this might be a decent starting point for you. Just my $.02

I have the Bic Acoustechs myself and they sound amazing, way better than what bose could even dream of achieving. They are worth every penny.

Just an FYI, you should audition some horn tweeter loaded speakers before you consider these. Some people find they just don't like horn tweeters.

Klispch uses horns, so if you go to a shop and listen to some klispch it will let you know if you like them or not. And don't just audition them for 5-10 minutes, try to give a good half hour to hour of listening before you determine if you like the horns.

If you find you like them, you will be very happy with the BIC's
