top tier for lcd tv's?

Who would you put in the topic tier of lcd brands? Who are in the second tier.
I think reliability is the highest rated factor before anything else, then PQ:

Tim, you are certainly opening up a can of worms on this one because everyone on this forum seems to have their own favorites. However, I'll be glad to start this off with my list and a few comments.

Tier One:

Samsung
Sony
LG
Panasonic (unfortunately their largest LCD is only 37")
Toshiba

Tier Two:

Sharp (two or three years ago they would have been in tier one but their quality has slipped dramatically)
Vizio
Mitsubishi (I think they make good TVs but they don't sell many for some reason)

Tier Three:

Everybody else with Philips probably at the top of Tier Three.

Not a bad recommendation, though I'd probably put Samsung and Sony by themsleves and the others in tier 2 most of the time. I would also have problem putting Philips at the top of any list, even the lowest tier. They are no longer the Philips that you once new. Anything new you buy from them is actuall a Funai product (Sylvania, Emerson, et. al.) The thing to remember is that everyone makes dogs and sometimes lower tier vendors come up with a gem. I would consider individual models and get to know them better than generalizing brands.

As far as brands go, consider the service possibilities. Check to see who has the best local servicers, who actually do the training and have good relations with the manufacturer. Some makers will be disqualified IMO on the service factor, having little or no local support for their products.

All others...

I would place Sony, Samsung and Toshiba at Tier 1, then LG, Sharp, Panasonic, Philips and Vizio (vizio at the bottom) of Tier 2. Everyone else Tier 3.

I think quality wise, Mitsu should be in the T1. They make some DAMN nice products, but they are expensive and rarely discounted.

I'd agree. Also see this opinion of another service technician about what they look like inside:

I cannot agree with his statements about panel problems. One of the dealers that I work for sells lots of Sony and Mits LCDs and I can count on one hand the number of warranty claims on those in the last couple of years. They have been very reliable sets, IME.

Boy, I know this thread will open a can of worms.

Let's just say that Sammy and Sony are the top two

IMO everyone else lags at least a year behind in their processing. Hopefully Tosh, LG and rest of them will catch up one day but I doubt it.

Does Hitachi fall into the 'everyone else' tier 3 category ?

a nice clean list and I agree with most but, I wouldn't' know if the exact order is right, but its not really as important.

Often its hard to tell the difference between the topd in reliability, say Honda vs Toyota, than between Toyota and GM for example. If they are the same on both counts, what differs is mostly esthetic and convenience, and this I find an issue between Sony and other brands.

But as others have said, it also matters what model you buy, and that many smaller tvs are likely OEMs while the top of the line are made by the makers themselves, can make a difference in standing on just brand names alone.

I haven't opened many TVs but I have opened a lot of smaller items and Sony has taken a tailspin in interior quality for run of the mill items like clocks, boom boxes, walkmen, etc., and were likely OEMs. The good news, is that even no-name brand boom boxes and clocks etc., are pretty reliable. Its made-in-japan products, like the PDA Clies line, were first rate both inside and out, so I'd think the same may hold for TVs too.

The poster in the link is talking more about smaller size tvs and this goes with my suspicion that they are often OEM and of a different quality caliber compared to their factory controlled models.
