HTIB or piece one together on a budget?

Hey guys I'm new to the forum but have been reading here for a few months. I'm getting ready to move into a new home and want to get me a decent surround system for about 6-700 bucks.

I am almost set on the Onkyo 6100 that can be had for around 550-600 but am still torn a little bit on maybe getting separates. The other thought I had was picking up a reconditioned Onkyo TX-SR606 for around 350 and then finding some speakers for around 350 to go with it.

Here is where I need the help, anyone have recommendations of a speaker set or separates that would be equal to if not better than the ones that come with the 6100 and is withing my general price range?

Some other information that should be helpful for your advice:

22x14 foot room, I'll be using half of it for the setup so about 10x14 area used with the rest out to the left as extra space.

The room is partially underground so I wont be using any fancy materials on the walls, just a plain wood finish.

Since the area is fairly small I'll prob. only use a 5.1 set.

Toshiba Regza 42" 1080p and will be using a PS3 for games and DvD's/BR Discs.

The amount listed is where I would love to keep it at but can afford to go a little higher, maybe 800-900 on the top end.

As always I appreciate any input and advice. Thanks.

I say go separate as the speakers that come with the 6100 aren't very good. Since you want 5.1 it's better to put more of your budget into the speakers because that's where you'll get a real improvement in sound. I haven't shopped for speakers in a while but a few that I know of are:
2 pair: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16882290094
center: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16882290022

and one of these subs: http://www.wwstereo.com/#/ecommerce/..._84__0_0_0_-1/

The energy C-50 and C-C50 will add up to about the same as above and might be good if you really need to keep them small: http://www.wwstereo.com/#/ecommerce/..._84__0_0_0_-1/

Look around a bit more and get some ideas from the speaker section. Good luck!

Thanks for the links. I was looking around more at Polk speakers after looking at your links and found the TSi100 speakers. Would it be worth $30 more a pair for those and the equivalent center channel over the Monitor 30 series? The specs look very similar as if the TSi100's might just be the newer models.

Thanks again.

I'm pretty sure the TSI series is the newer version of the Monitor series. I don't know if they're worth the extra $30 however.

Another very popular choice is the Energy speakers:
C-100 (from Audio Advisor): http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listi...&condition=new
C-C100 (from Audio Advisor): http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listi...&condition=new
-and you can either get another pair of C-100s or go with a pair of C-50 for surrounds:

Bit the bullet and figured I would spend a bit more now and upgrade other stuff later. Starting with a 3.1 and possibly using some of my old sony's for rear surrounds...

Monitor 50's for Front L/R
CS2 for Center
BIC H-100 Subwoofer
Onkyo 606 refurb for my reciever

Hopefully that will be a good starting point for me. Long term plan will be to upgrade to Monitor 70's for fronts and move the 50's to the back at that time. Possibly add another sub down the road depending on how this one fills out my room. Thanks again for the advice and motivation.

Looks like a great choice, I'm sure you'll be happier than with an HTiB - multiple subs are good too. I've seen the Monitor 70's go as low $180 shipped. Enjoy!

Went and jumped on a newegg deal for some M10's to use as temporary surrounds till I upgrade the 50's. These should match better than using some of my old sony's for surrounds.
