Help me setup my temporary JTR Triple 12LF system

Settlement on the house is Thursday and I can finally uncrate these speakers I have had for months now and power them up. I am recently undecided on how to set up my HT and which PJ to buy, what wall to hang the screen on, etc., but rather than wait till all of the details are figured out I want to use my 50" Pio Pro Elite plasma and wire up the system. I have a Yammy RX-V2500 (NO hdmi) receiver/pro, Emotiva XPA-5 amp, Oppo upscaling DVD player (BR player and Emotiva UMC-1 will be on order shortly) B&W s603 rears, JTR Triple 12LF's for LCR and a Paradigm sub.

Where do I begin and how do I calibrate to get the best sound of out these components and speakers before I upgrade to the UMC-1, PJ, BR player, etc.

Do I use the Yammy menu for speaker crossover, small, med, large or is that found in the Oppo DVD menu?

Help is appreciated!

I would use the receiver to set the crossover. I would set the Triple 12's to small as that usually sets the crossover to 80 hz. The triple 12's can go below that but your subwoofer should do fine up to that level and will lessen the load on your amplifier. You can look at your receiver's manual to ensure that the crossover for small is 80 hz.

For a temporary setup you should be able to calibrate the level JTR's and subwoofer using the receiver's test tones and a Radioshack sound pressure level meter or your ears.

It should sound amazing.

Once you get your final system set up, you can experiment with different crossover points. However, for most setups 80 hz is best even if your main speakers will do well below that level.

I would at least experiment with running those incredible speakers full range. I know this goes against conventional wisdom, but those aren't conventional speakers. I have Pro JBLs (MRX512M) and have found that full range is far superior (they also have a 12" driver...but not three of them). It provides that mid bass "slam" that everyone is in search of. I would post my FR charts but don't have them stored on this computer.

BTW, I'm jealous of your speakers!

The Triple 12 LF's low frequency extension stops at 50 hz. If you have a setting would cross them over in that range it would work, but there is no reason to run them full range and send them low frequency information that they are not designed to handle.

I am jealous of your speakers as well.

Since you're in West Chexter, PA, you should invite me over to help you set things up! I would love to hear those speakers.

Which paradigm sub do you have? If it can not match the JTR's in output then crossover at 60 hz or 55 hz. If the sub is capable(most likely not compared to 3 12LF's) then crossover at 80hz. I would crossover at 80 hz and get some more subs. How about the Captivator, that will keep up. All your crossovers should be done in the receiver. JMHO

Craig,

You don't want an invite yet. 14 1/2 hours packing yesterday, settlement this am, 2 completely packed PODS, one packed 26' Uhaul and the tractor trailer movers coming tomorrow!

Once things settle down and I get this system up you are more than welcome to swing by!

PM me when you're ready. I really would like to hear those speakers. In the meantime, you're welcome to check out my system:

Atlantic Tech 8200e LR (3)
Atlantic Tech 8200e SR (2)
JL Audio F112, (2)
Earthquake Cinenova Amp (325 wpc x5)
Onkyo 885 Pre/Pro
Seymour AV 120" Acoustically Transparent "Scope" Screen
BenQ W10000 1080p DLP Projector
Crowson Tactile Transducer/Buttkicker BKA1000 Amp

There are a couple of other guys in the Lancaster/York area with even better HT's than mine. I'm sure they would be willing to demo their systems also. Let me know if you're up for it, (and you're not too busy unpacking!)

Wow, that is an awesome setup. I am climbing up the upgrade ladder slowly My previous house has my 126" Carada BW screen (which I am keeping) but I simply hung it on the wall and then used a Panny AX PT 200u PJ and was happy. Now I bought the JTR's, am thinking I need a new or more subs and also am thinking of doing something a little more finished than just hanging the screen to the wall. Maybe a small stage, columns on either side (Italian wife, what can I say?), etc. I don't need to go all out on the stage but have come to the conclusion the screen on a wall won't fit the look of the room. Also need to figure out which PJ will suit my needs the best.

I hope my single 15" Paradigm sub will be adequate for several months!
