DIY CIH Projector with a fixed 2x lens?

Has anyone here tried building a projector with a 2x anamorphic lens as its primary lens? Couldn't somebody -- theoretically, at least -- build an LCD projector with a horizontal-stretch lens, and then control the aspect ratio with a scaler?

It seems to me like a reasonably sound idea, but I'm assuming there must be a good reason why I haven't seen it discussed already . . .

The nearest I've seen to that was a Runco with a fixed prism lens on the front and the scaling options were built in. You just used the remote to select 16:9 or scope.

Still had a primary lens since this was just a 'standard' Runco pj with an A lens permanently attached.

What would be nice would be a pj with a 2.37 display panel rather than a 16:9 one and anamorphic lens.

You can find lots of 2x anamorphic lenses on ebay and use those with 4:3 projectors. That will give you 2.66 max AR. Theoretically, it should work. The problem is almost all of the 2x anamorphic lenses are made for cinema projectors. Those are made to work with very long throws and have very small aperture. You may get vignetting.

Another option is to try 1.5x anamorphic lens with 16:9 projector and it will give the similar effect. There were some lenses like Iscorama 54 which had 54 mm dia at rear. That may work for home projectors.
