Trouble Connecting PS3 to Sony Wega

I have looked through the forums for some help, most advise I have tried already. Maybe there is something new or I am missing.

Here is the deal. I have a Sony KDFE42A10 that has worked well for the last 3 years. I have had a PS3 and Direct TV hooked to it via a HDMI Switcher using imput 6. I have had no problems until this past Monday. All of a sudden without ever having a problem with HDMI, my PS3 will not display, yet my Direct TV works fine again, both using imput 6 and HDMI via a switcher.

What I have done:

1. Spent 4 hours with Sony and PS3 people. I have unplugged the TV and did different resets on the PS3 at least a dozen times.

2. Hooked PS3 up directly to the back of TV with same cord that is used for Direct TV-nothing. New HDMI-nothing. Routed into the switcher the same way as DTV-nothing, but DTV works with HDMI.

3. Tried neighbors PS3-Same problem.

4. Connected using AV cords-works in 480i mode. Hooked up HDMI and was "detected". Selected the option in PS3 and screen still blank on imput 6(HDMI).

5. Checked a newer Element TV and had no problem with HDMI in all modes. Made sure to custom set 1080i on my Element tv just in case and went back to original tv-still same problem.

6. Cussed at it.

Seem that when I do turn on the PS3, my screen will flicker and even turn a darker shade of black using the HDMI. The screen will say video 6, 480i even though the 480i defaults are turned off. Again, not an issue using HD content on DTV as widescreen and HD is auto detected and displayed.

I have the 80g system purchased in Dec. and have had no problems with games, blue ray and usb-personal videos. I am lucky if I turned the system on 3 times a week.

What gives? No one knows-Sony or the local techs they have had me call.

Thanks

Can't say what the exact problem is but your troubleshooting indicates the problem is the TV. Is it still under warranty by any chance?

Try using component with your PS3. You won't be losing anything, IMO since your TV doesn't do 1080p anyways.

Instead of checking the boxes just try to do the auto detect settings when you power up the PS3. (Hold the button until you hear the second beep as you power on)

I'd say try chaning your HDMI cables around and trying the PS3 direct to the TV. The only problem with HDMI cables is that they are very flimsy and prone to breaking far quicker than other AV leads.

Try this thread:

or video reset by turning PS3 on by holding the power button untill the second series of beeps, and set video to 720P HDMI. Worst case, I agree with Tony to use component cables. That will eliminate the need for an hdmi switcher as well. The HDMI cable is not improving quality for you.

Guys...I greatly appreciate the help. I have done all that you have asked already noted in the initial post.

I have changed/added new HDMI cables.

I have hooked directly into the TV.

I have reset the PS3 with 2 beeps, 3 beeps, 3 quick beeps, and unplugged it already.

I have used the av cables and the work fine. I guess I will go and use HD component cables and try them. I just need to buy some.

Thanks

If you can wait a few days, these are great-very nice looking to. I use them when I take mine on trips with me, you never know what kind of TV you are going to encounter at Hotels/Family places

darn, just dropped 14 on PS3 cables yesterday. Why is Monoprice so cheap? I bought 1.50 HDMIs a couple months ago. Can I expect there cables to wear out soon? If the do?

They won't wear out lol Cheap because of high volume and low overhead. Quality is generally very good.

Just to add - cheap because cables are cheap to make. Even cables that retail at a couple of hundred dollars only cost $2 to make.

You issue isn't from the ps3. I have the same Sony display but the KDF-E50A10. I have a similar issue with my HDMI input port. I had my HDA1,PS3 and elite 360 connected via monoprice 3x1 hdmi switcher.

It ran fine for years until several months ago. Tried watching a dvd via hd-a1 picture would blink in and out every few seconds until my player would have a 'hdmi error' on it's display. Tried my ps3 same thing even worse no picture just sound. Tried the 360 plays games fine but when I tried a dvd the 'hdcp' error pops up.

I searched for answers and I believe my Sony KDF-E50A10 hdcp chip is fried or 'p-board' is damaged. The 'p-board' is where the hdmi input port is located and I called my local Sony outfit and the part costs $140. Hate to say it but I don't want to chance replacing it if I'm not 100% sure it's the problem.

Otherwise spend the money and have the sony tech verify accurately. These rp lcds from sony don't age well. I already had to replace the optical block in Oct.'08.

edit after some research mine is not the same model. FWIW try component

wxguy23. Have you tried doing a factory reset on the TV? I have the KDFE50A10 same as the 42 except it's 50". My TV wouldnt recognize any input via the HDMI port. I went through the manual and found how to do a factory reset on the TV. Basically reboot the whole TV. I cant remember off the top of my head exactly how to do it. Press the power button and hold it and some other button. Look in your owners manual or it google. Give that a shot before you call someone out to look at the TV.

With the tv off press on. Hold up on the remote>while holding up press the power button in front of the tv. TV should blink once off/on.

I tried it too but it didn't fix my problem.

You are probably overestimating even for the high-end stuff. Pretty much everything is made in China, it probably costs more to ship it.
