DSD over HDMI - Players

Thread Starter

I thought I would try to maintain an up-to-date list of SACD players that transmit DSD (and/or multichannel PCM) over HDMI. I'll keep this first post updated as new players become available (and others drop out of circulation). Please post any additions and corrections, and I'll make any edits that are necessary.

I hope to start a similar thread about receivers that can accept DSD over HDMI in the Receiver forum. (There's already a thread that covers pre-pros here.)

Thanks! Am I correct that both of these have been discontinued? If so, I'll add a separate section for discontinued players.

The Oppo 970 doesn't transmit DSD in it's native form. It does decode it then convert it to PCM, so it belong only in the second group. and yes it is discontinued.

Pioneer DV-610 also.

Does the oppo dv980 also support multi channel dsd or just stereo? Running DSD over HDMI will any one player sound better then another player?

The Oppo DV-980H does both stereo and multi-channel SACD via DSD over HDMI. Listening to it right now, as a matter of fact (playing Moody Blues "Days of Future Passed"...excellent!).

Sorry, cannot really answer your second question. This is the only player I've had that sends DSD...until my BDP-83 arrives tommorow.

In his Stereophile column, Kal Rubinson has claimed that there are differences between different players even when they're sending DSD over HDMI. However, he has also said that the differences are quite small.

I also gave in and just purchased a onkyo dv-sp506, ended up getting a open box deal off amazon for $112. Seems like a great player for the cost. I would imagine it is at least on par with the oppo sense I'm sending dsd over hdmi. Looking forward to jumping into the world of SACD. Also bought pink floyd dark side of the moon, the in the flesh tour album and Dire Straights brothers in arms. Anyone have any experience using the dv-sp506 for dsd over hdmi??

1, Yes for both:Stereo, and MCH
2, I don't see how they would, the decoding and D/A conversion would take place entirely in the downstream product.

"Players that transmit DSD over HDMI"

Phillips DVP-5996K. Only $70 even has upsampling for CD up to 192 I think. Best part is it plays pirated DVD's better than any other brands.

Should be better than the Oppo. 506 with Burr-Brown 1796 DAC's....good stuff! You're going to love multi-channel music, Floyd is awesome. The separation and clarity is outstanding. Roy Orbison is incredible too. I wasn't a huge fan until I listened to the SACD and it blew my my socks clean off. The Beatles Love is outstanding too, very enjoyable and well separated. R.E.M. - AFTP another outstanding DVD-A!

They look non-existent in the US. Quite a bargain for that capability though.

I'm going to have to look into getting AFTP also on DVD Audio that was a great album so I imagine the dvd audio disc is amazing... Check out the In The Flesh SACD though. That is what made me want a SACD player. Heard that on a set of B&W 802's through a mcintosh sacd player and mono block amps and it was amazing. Is the Beatles Love multi Channel also? You know any good retailers to pick up SACD's at?

Why should it be better then the Oppo sending DSD over HDMI, and why would matter the DA converters, they are being bypassed!?

Yep, Using burr brown acs either way sense D/a is being done via my onkyo 876. Got my new Onkyo player though ( was cheaper then the oppo or I would have gotten the oppo). Haven't got my other acd's yet but dark side of the moon sounds amazing. What a great album. I also have the mobile fidelity sound lab copy on LP and I like the surround mic on the SACD much better. I think the bass is much cleaner and love the surround split. A very cool disc I must say.

Thanks for mentioning In the Flesh, I have it on DVD. SACD should be phenomenal......

I will have to give the analogs a shot. Right now I'm sending the dsd signal over hdmi to my onkyo 876 and it sounds great. I believe it uses the same burr-brown d/a converters that the 506 has. Now if I can just find a good place to get discs I will be all set.

If you use bass management and time alignment via the HDMI, you'll loose those option through the analog connections. The player might offer a rudimentary bass management, but not time alignment without converting DSD to PCM first[if it offers that at all], and it won't nearly be as precise, as your 876 which uses a sophisticated DSP chip that the player will lack.

Thanks a bunch I was figuring along the same lines. I must admit dsd over hdmi to the 876 sounds amazing. I couldn't believe the sound quality. Even if I used direct to dac processing I would imagine the sound quality would be just as good in the 876 sense it uses the same d/a as the 506 player has.

Anyone have a source for the Integra 6.9?

Thanks

Yes DSD via HDMI to Integra DTR-8.8.
Oppo 983H and Pioneer 696 (I have both) also transmits SACD signals as LPCM strereo and multichannel though.

Should work great for you. I went with the best deal because all sacd players will sound the same if doing dsd over hdmi

I sure hope so. It's for my dedicated theater so it's not for critical music listening just background and other listening during the ramp up to movies. It still needs to be impressive. Hopefully it won't let me down. Arrives tomorrow from what FedX tells me.

As does the now discontinued Oppo 981H (but it doesn't do DSD over HDMI).
Thanks for complementing McFan,

I also have the 981H and I just realized now that I do have 3 discontinued players though. Well, matter of fact 4, if I include the Panny BD-30

Best player for DSD over HDMI is the Sony XA5400ES although there is a lot of controversy as to whether or not we get DSD or PCM Does anyone really know the answer ?
The Sony XA5400ES sounds better than the Oppo 980 for RB CD & SACD stereo & multichannel

I can answer that one: It can do both but what you get depends on what you connect it to.

However, don't ask me why it doesn't work with some processors or what the PCM output resolution is.
Well if you connect it to the Sony STR -DA5400ES/6400ES AV receivers you will get LPCM. albeit with very low jitter and very good sound.slightly better than with the Onkyo 706 that does output DSD without internal conversion to LPCM in Pure Direct Mode.. Apparently latest model Pioneers will have PQLS a similar system to Sony's H.A.T.S but theydo convert to PCM at least the LX 71 &LX 8I do and I suspect the latest LX 82 will also convert to PCM.Onkyo will get low jitter Burr-Brown DAC's
