I just purchased this player. Have you ever tried this player via the analog outs for 5.1?

Sure it does, if you feed it to the amps, except RBCD, where
you have a valid point.

On the other hand if you send DSD out there is no difference.

The HATS jitter free handshake is greatly offset by the poor
quality of the Sony ES receiver line, so that benefit is also gone.

Now, if you go by specs and have stage 3 upgraditis, the Sony

I just purchased a Onkyo DV-506 Universal DVD player that outputs SACD/DVD Audio via HDMI. My question is when I set the SACD setting to output DSD to my Onkyo 705, the receiver says it is being sent as 44.1 Khz. When I change the SACD output to 5.1 PCM the receiver says 176.4 Khz, and the Audysee shuts off. When the audysee shuts off does that mean that DAC conversion is being processed in the DVD player, or is the amp processing it minus the Audysee settings? Also can Audysee handle anything sent over 88.2khz?

Kal, FYI. I recently tried connecting the XA Sony 5400 ES to a new Classe SSP-800 (dual DSP upgrade and latest version 2.0.1 software) via HDMI with a resultant "Unmatched Sink" message on the Sony display. There was no music from any speaker. There was no problem with the Sony's analog outputs and no problem with an Oppo BDP-83 via HDMI. This seems to reinforce your earlier experience with an EDID "handshake" problem between the Classe SSP-800 and the Sony.

For which, of course, no one will "man up" and take responsibility.

Oppo officially announced their BDP-80 today, which is lower priced than the BDP-83. It supports DSD over HDMI like its big brother.

Have you checked on the bitrate of the LPCM?

That is standard CD resolution. I would hope and expect the output to be 88.2Khz/24-bit from SACD.

My older Denon 3910 uses Denon Link 3, which will send DSD across it (Source direct "on") or send 24/176.4 PCM (source direct "off'). So Denon's new bar is quite low!

AFAIK, current Denons will also output full-bandwidth via DenonLink which, they aver, is superior to HDMI anyway.

Yes, they always pushed DL (of course) but I tended to agree. Seemed cleaner, tighter. And with the 3910 HDMI was not an option for SACD, even in source direct off (PCM) mode.

It would probably be more useful to people if you kept them on the list, but with an asterisk or in a separate group. Otherwise some would probably think their absence was just an oversight. And it might serve to alert others to what I consider a form of deception.

Yes. Meridian did say that the problem was theirs (and possibly Classe's, too) in that they were not handling Sony's EDID properly. Apparently, there is something in that EDID that, while in spec, is not common.

Jitter? Sharing bandwidth with video cannot be beneficial.
Personal I have an Denon DVD-2930 connected via a DLIII with a Denon AVR-3805 that can decode DSD and it's sounds better than DSD over HDMI that I heard on a soundroom. But... different speakers, different receiver.

I am curious to see how the new mainstream Sony BD players the x70 series handle DSD direct and compare to their higher end ES transports.

I can tell you that in my experience in the sub $600 players - the Integra DPS 6.9 sounds better than a Pioneer DV-58AV sending DSD over HDMI with the same power supply, HDMI cable and source disc.

I presently own and Integra 8.9 AVR and I looking to pruchase an SACD player.have any of you had the luxury to compare the 2 players.I've always been a Integra fan and I'm wondering if I should stick with an Integra SACD player to match to my AVR, or is there something better for the same price?

Puzzles me, too, but the differences are minor and, for many, may be inconsequential.

The 6.9 is fantastic for SACD. The menus are superb. It is LESS than superb with its DVD-A decoding via PCM.

I have used it with my DTR-8.8 and Pio SC-07 -works well with both and shines with SACD sources. HDMI control does NOT function properly so don't bother with it.

Compared to the 5400 (I have never owed that unit) it is much lighter and thinner. IMHO well worth the $400+ paid.

I have it in my Control4 setup in my theater and the RS232 control is a bonus if you need it.

The 5400 has balanced outputs but for 3x the price.

Unless you are using it with a higher end dedicated PRE-PRO and amp the 6.9 is a great option for the price/performance ratio.

You may also want to wait for the ES version of the Sony BDP-57/570 - they should all do SACD/BD. Why invest in two units when you can have BD/DVD/SACD/3D BD in one????

Just received my Onkyo DV-SP506 and am very pleased so far. Plays SACD and DVD-A over HDMI and sounds great! Highly recommended.
