Help me find a strong tuner, please!!

I need to buy an LCD with a strong tuner because I will use it only for over-the-air broadcasts. I anticipate having antenna trouble too, as I did with analog signals. (The NYC area is baaad for over-the-air).

It seems that everyone who writes reviews has cable or a dish, because they never talk about the HD tuner or signal strength. I'm looking to purchase a 40" tv, probably LCD (although if you told me plasma sets had better tuners, I might switch). Any ideas on how to evalute tuner strength or recommendations on actual sets would be *greatly* appreciated, Thanks!

tuners are pretty much the same across manufacturing lines, it' would not make too much sense to have differing tuners in plasmas and LCD units.

That said I'm pretty impressed with the tuners in my Samsung plasma and LCD. I also have a Panny plasma and I think the Sammy tuners out perform the Panasonics. But I'm suburban, at a good elevation, and get signals from 3 markets with a very good antenna, city reception can be significantly different. If you narrow it down to a few sets you might post in your locals Hd forum and see what other in your area get with the same or similar TVs.

The Samsung DTB-H260F is the HDTV tuner everyone recommends. Amazon used to sell it for $160, but appears to no longer carry it. Try to score one on eBay.

The price has shot up apparently due to the conversion to digital.

I have been cheated twice with lcd tv's with weak tuners. The first set I didn't know too much about reception, and after hundreds of trips on the roof to install a new rotor and antenna, the station still took hits. My second lcd I bought from an "online BIG merchant" They sent me another set,but I was so rushed when the "Expert" from their comp came that I had to except it. The replacement had just as bad tuner in it, and now with these VHF stations popping up now the tuner can't handle it. I'v noticed differences with set top converter boxes of the same brand also. This is a sad situation, and NOBODY of these retailers cares. They think your nuts, and should just get cable. Why should I pay for something that I can get free that has BETTER Quality. Just try your luck and make sure you return it before 30 days!
