Balck bars on my parent's Insignia

My parents bought an Insigna from BB about 6 months ago. They said after the conversion Friday they now have black bars on the side of their picture where before they didn't. I said select 4:3 and they said they did, but they it didn't help. Do you know what they are doing wrong? I'm not nearby.

Cycle through the zoom settings and see if there's one that will fix things.

I'm assuming the HD source is antenna, correct?

Hef, are you talking about an Insignia television or about an Insignia converter box?

Run through the "Zoom" settings on their box (otherwise known as aspect). What they will probably be happiest with is "ZOOM" - i.e centercut 4:3.

In the last month, I've seen a lot more pillar and postage stamp formats, especially in the early evening hours. Somebody at the station must think the news is better this way. I'd rather have letterbox, like it used to be.

The Insignia/Zenith lets you set aspect ratio individually by channel. So if the pillars and windowpanes bug your parents, and it happens only on a few stations, they can set those stations to fill the screen, and have the preferred aspect ratio everywhere else.

But it is a hassle to switch back for prime time, so I just put up with it.
