Alien Prequel - Prometheus - Page 7

I will be tickled pink if RS can pull this off but all signs point to no in my magic 8 ball. Half of what makes Alien work as a masterpiece is the unknown elements that have never been officially explained. Sure, I've read RS's take on the space jockey and I have read numerous Alien comics over the past two decades that tackle the subject, but in my mind what makes Alien so gloomy and foreboding is the fact that the characters in the film have no real idea what happened outside of knowing whatever it was it wasn't good.

Going into grave detail about preceding events over two films seems not only like overkill but a daunting task that is truly impossible to pull off without diminishing the original's value.

On your recommendation, I will...if you can tell the following issue were later addressed in a way that made sense:

What really turned me off during those early episodes was the completely unbelievable explanation (or lack thereof) of HOW it was possible for a commercial jetliner to disappear in this era.
Just not credible, from a technical POV.
We all know how much effort and high tech is used to find downed airliners.

Also, the homicidal creature (IIRC) was frickin' unbelievable....in the extreme.
As was the high number of survivors was a stretch too far IMO.

I hope your magic 8-ball is wrong on this, but it may not be.
I am trying not to be pessimistic, but it is tough....particularly after seeing the new Predators.

All of those things are addressed in ways that make sense, ways that make you think\\ponder\\question, and sometimes in both ways. Regardless of some people's expectations not being met and their subsequent disappointment in it's ending.. the show is very much a cerebral experience as it is an emotional and thematic one.

oink: I have to agree with lwright in that LOST was a memorable and entertaining experience, one of the best shows ever made for TV. The fact that it was fully serialized and still made it 6 seasons is surprising enough by itself. But those were 6 kick-ass seasons! The production values, writing, and casting were first-rate - ABC spent a ton of money filming this show in one of the most beautiful places on earth and it shows in every scene. While the ending didn't personally satisfy me on certain levels, the journey getting there was spellbinding. Few shows are worth revisiting on shiny disk; this one is.

I believe LOST is either out on BD or is coming out soon....I'll pick it up and take a look.

Better be saving your pennies. It won't be cheap. But you'll likely find it worth it. I watched the show and I'm buying it. But I'm part of what ABC would probably call a "target rich environment" as I'm a sucker for serialized fantasy shows. And LOST is the best there ever was in that particular genre.

Funny running into this discussion. My wife and I just finished Season 4 of Lost on Netflix streaming. Now I have the BD's for Season 5 to hit this weekend. On a whim, I watched the pilot a couple of months ago. 2:00am the next morning and I was on the sixth episode. I finally stopped to let my wife catch up with me, and we've been addicted ever since. Kind of cool not having to wait between weeks and seasons to watch them. We simply don't watch any television series, so this was quite the surprise that we fell in love with this one right off the bat.

I've also been reading the Lost thread in the HDTV programming forum here after each episode to see what the discussion was like. Hate I missed out on all that.

Two series really have me right now: Dexter and True Blood.
The wife and I just can't get enough.
And both are on BD.

I gave True Blood a shot. Made it about 10 minutes in and decided it just must not be for me. It seemed to adhere to the drama formula that turned me off tv series in the first place. Plan on trying out Dexter, based on friend's reviews.

ALIEN: The Prequel

What I would like to see is Scott end the movie with the Space Jockey's ship landing/crashing onto LV426

I always liked THE ROAD WARRIOR, the way it started, once the monolog is finished, the movie opens with Mel in the V8 Inteceptor. MAD MAX ended with Mel driving away in the V8 Inteceptor.

Cameron did that with ALIENS. Started the second movie right where the first left off.

Scott would keep continuinty with his ALIEN

Dexter is equally as cheesy and improbable but it is fully entertaining despite said flaws...True Blood, on the other hand, seems like something you would see on TBS in that it looks low budget, the acting is sub par, and the concepts are presented in a lowest common denominator manner (i.e. the concepts of homophobia and racism) and they fail at conveying that. Last I checked your average minority and homosexual in America were/are fighting for equal rights and as a whole didn't survive on feasting on the rest of us. An example would be when Sookie confronts her lame Vampire lover about a gruesome murder they just witnessed between Vampires during a car ride home and his reply was, "Sookie, your kind have been killing each other for centuries", or some ultra generic garbage to justify an already stupid vamp on vamp killing.

My wife and I watched the first season and could barely get through so it really came as no surprise that after we attempted to watch episode 1 of season 2 we shut it off and gave up on the series as a whole.

I expect more from AB. What should have been an interesting and dramatic take on Vampires trying to fit in with modern society ended up being a cheesy and uninspired cliche fest that isn;t even fun as a guilty pleasure.

Oh, and it features weredogs...

I would agree that that would be the best route to take with the prequels so its safe to say the end product will be polar opposite and feature Justin Beiber as the male lead.

The first season was the strongest, and went downhill from there. It became obvious to me that the writers were making things up as they were gone along.

There were over 100 episodes of LOST, I believe. Of course they made things up as they went along; that's what television writers do. However, they had the endgame in mind from the very beginning and if you watch the entire series, there are plenty of clues as to where they were going. It all ties together at the end. Some people just didn't get it, couldn't follow it, got confused, etc. For others, it was sheer brilliance, and got better as it went along. To each his own.

To each his own indeed but I despise the contention that people who don't like it don't "get it". I don't like it because it comes off as sophomoric and haphazard both in the writing and presentation of the final product.

To each his own indeed. I'm not going to generalize that if you're disappointed the only possible reason is because you don't get it, but the simple truth is that many "don't get it". While the show is certainly not perfect, it is easily some of the best visual storytelling ever to be produced. I like to describe it as "visual literature" because it's about the closest we'll ever get to experiencing a rich, vibrant, engaging novel through a visual medium. Also, the throwaway insult that "it sucks because they were just making it up as they went along" is just silly and misguided, imo. First of all it's a TV show, of course not every single detail was set in stone from Day 1. That would not only be extremely difficult, but it would be just plain stupid and inefficient. However, the outline of the show (what got the pilot green-lighted) contained many of the significant meanings, themes, and even certain plot elements that were apart of the story. JJ Abrams even recently confirmed this again at Comic Con last week. The show "breathed" throughout the seasons, but it intelligently and engagingly conveyed various intended and layered messages to the audience. How anyone could watch the show from Episode 1 to the finale and end up saying that the amateur and average writer's were haphazardly pulling it all out of their ass every week is quite mind-boggling... the show itself is the greatest evidence to the contrary.

Currently, I'm not connected to my 1080p monitor and had to look at it in 720p.

I just started reading through this thread when I read the above quote. There is a good chance that few on this forum saw the original in theatres. I saw it with a friend. Both of us were in our 30s, were reasonablly macho and didn't expect what this movies presented. As I remember we both had the afternoon off and went to a matine in a mostly empty theatre. Enough with the lead in. It scared us both. I don't think a movie had me so shoke up since I saw the original Frankenstein when I was 10 years old. (I had to leave the theater for Frankenstein). Unless you've got a batcave of a home theatre with a large screen, I don't think you can get that same feeling watching at home.

I can't remember if I DID see it in the theater...probably not, otherwise I would definitely be able to recall staining my panties.

I just looked at the 1080p trailer....even better than the 720p.
The BDs look to be worth the wait.

I'm one of those few. When I left the theater I was thankful that it was a bright summer day instead of night.
