I don't know where your numbers came from, but HERE is another set of estimates that seem more complete and perhaps more realistic.

It seems that some people are frustrated that the latest firmware focused on correcting , the infamous "Greek Bug" that corrupted the greek subtitle functionality (Greek subs were displayed correctly in the early firmware versions 1.01.xx )

Furthermore , many are wondering why the Greeks and not the Arabs? After all the Greek community are 15-20 milion compared to 200 milion arab speaking .

This is a fair argument , but lets not forget that in the official WD feature petition , the always loud and noisy Greeks were making a mess , cry-babying three months now and so, the Greek Subtitle functionality was always in the World-Wide Top Ten Feature List. Alas, the Arabs were not as loud , as their fair (and maybe higher priority) argument never reached the top-10!

So the moral of the story is : ASK AND YOU WILL BE GIVEN

(After all, it was a minor bug. There were unofficial hacks that restored the subtitle functionality a long time now, but this is "the real thing")

A small story for all the English-speaking fellows that may wonder : "Hey , whats the story with all these subtitle nonsense. Why is this important to them? What are they , some kind of weirdos? "

So here it is :

The American / English TV Shows and Movies marketed world-wide to almost 6 Billion people but only half a billion of them are speaking English! How's that possible? With to ways

1. Most of the Countries "dub" the original voices of the actors so e.g. Tom Cruise seems to speak chinese. The result , in my opinion , is very intrusive to the original piece of art because 50% of the original artistic product (the sound) is lost
2. The remaining countries use subtitles extensively to all "foreign" program (native to you my friends)

Well, Greece is traditionally a subtitling country. Everybody LOVES American/English Series and Movies and everybody prefers to view them with a subtitle visual aid , even so that the 80% of the Greeks speak English fluently as a second language.

What happened in the last few years is that with the rising popularity of the Internet there is a thriving community of volunteering subtitlers that produce a Greek subtitle only 2-3 hours after a show airs in USA!!

The subtitle then is distributed with the methods we all know along with the movies / series. only hours after the original broadcast!

There is a freebie called JoinVobFiles (Just Google it) which quickly joins all your vob files into 1. I found I still had a small gap between Vob files when hitting "Play" after ripping a DVD. This 222kb tool fixed that for me.

I support the heavy subtitles support by wdtv support team!
Luckily, the 4 million Croatians fit into the large group of countries using Latin script and Central European encoding so we were catered for a long time ago, while being virtually silent LOL...but...support wasn't there from the start, i.e. Mighty Microsoft managed to push its own Windows 1250 codepage which messed things up...most subtitle releases use the Win 1250 codepage because, initially most subs were meant to be played on a Windows PC...2 mins of hate for Microsoft!!!

The real relevant number isn't the number of people that speak a certain language, it's the number of WDTVs sold to those communities. Let's face it some countries are poorer and less technologically advanced than other countries. Consequently, even if those poor countries have a large population, they're not likely to buy as many techno gadgets as more affluent countries.

I was posting here a while back about multi-line subtitles not displaying properly. I'm sad to see that it isn't fixed yet, but it's no big deal. I'm really disappointed that GuyWD and ScottWD don't seem to be around anymore. I had a lot more confidence in the product when we actually had a voice that we could interact with.

All people do here is talk s**t now. At least a large number of them. Its not hard to figure out why they don't come here.

Then is good to know that WD is not posting here no more just because some people here are complaining because of bugs that are not fixed in almost 7 months for the player they bought.
Believing in your statement, its a well mature decision from WD!

You will need to turn off subtitles with this version, if need be, as there is no option in the settings for it.

I know, i have to turn them off every time i watch an iso.

I couldn't agree more . Here in Saudi Arabia , we are big fans of American shows like lost and prison break . But not all of us speak English well . So, adding the subtitles is a must . And I don't think that it's hard to do . The WD is released officially in our country by a trusted dealer, with a warrenty. We didin't buy it online from the States . So we should be considred for an Arabic subtitles update .

Why would they come on here just to get bashed?? Its not going to get the bugs fixed any faster. I'm sure they stop by now and then. I dont care enough to look them up on here and see if it shows that in their profile.

But yah when a bunch of guys like you are just going to jump down their throats why bother.

There cant possibly be any other reason that they just stopped coming here all of a sudden.

GuyWD and ScottWD can speak for themselves, they don't need you to do it for them in repetitive posts. I think we get what you think your point is.

They stoped coming here because of users that complain... no, jump down their throats, about bugs? LOL!

I would like to thank Volunteer Moderator, markrubin, for his help in getting rid of some of the most obnoxious, abusive, rude and disrespectful members in the WDTV threads. See his post #125 in this thread. It has been almost three days now and not a single post by any of the THREE WORST (imho) members (normally, between the three of them, it was impossible to read more than 5 to 10 posts without seeing at least one of their posts). Hopefully they are gone for good. I had ALL OF THEM on my IGNORE LIST anyway.

Thanks again markrubin

OTHER MEMBERS:

Let's not turn this into censorship due to small, respectful disagreements

... BUT ...

Please heed the advice given by members Ph8te and oliverjg earlier in this thread and put the really obnoxious, abusive, rude and disrespectful members on your IGNORE LIST. PLEASE ... DO NOT FEED THE TROLLS!!!

BEFORE putting posters on your ignore list, REPORT them first so the Admins/Mods can decide what (if any) action to take with regard to the reported poster (ie. warning, suspension for x # of days, or permanent banishment ).

Thank you for your time,

if WD not checking wish/bug lists then maybe current release is only place to comment...I apologize (however it's still much more productive than all the other whining and off-topic posts typically contained).

multi-channel AAC continues to be prob if your WD is set to digital because of all other AC3 and DTS content...so:

1. if we can't have menu that allows format-specific indicator for digital/stereo audio output, can we at least have a discrete code for our unified remotes that would allow for toggling between digital/analog audio...because interrupting the movie and navigating the menu is a PITA....and....there continues to be a sorting sequence BUG in the recently viewed movies list (when more than one drive connected) that makes return navigation even worse. (if this new beta has resolved please advise)
note: if there is a decent conversion tool out there I would consider changing audio to AC3

2. auto-detecting framerate...why is this not a higher priority ?? ...and if we aren't getting it can't we at least get INFO screen that details more mediainfo-type specs for the files so we can muck with it manually more easily ??

3. On a lesser note...(but probably EASY to do)...how about ability to associate .txt file or something that would allow us to bring up movie description details/attributes...year, plot, actors, etc... (if there is a standard filetype, all the better because we won't have to create manually, just include it in the folder)......some of us have way too many titles to make blind selections...and it is even worse for any other visiting family/friends who try to use it)

BUGS...or...NOT BUGS: probably worth mentioning that I had recent experience where ALL the transport buttons either did not respond at all or had ridiculously inconsistent operation...(and maybe some slight sync issues too)...I had maybe 65g avail on a 500g drive but I decided to lop off folder that contained about 40g of files...WDTV functioned 100% aok immediately after...I then resync'd which added the folder/files back onto the drive...and everything continued to work totally fine...many have complained about variety of similar symptoms previously where they thought their remote wasn't responding, etc....anyhow, just wanted to make point that where possible it is maybe good idea to refresh content on drive before spending umpteen hours trying to document or troubleshoot any suspiscious performance issues with it.

ENJOY...ps, it's summer, roll with it !!
