The "Forza 3 is coming lets talk about racing setups" thread!

Here's the deal - I've been playing the sh*t outta Forza 2 with the MS wheel, and I'm pretty much committed to getting a cockpit type setup in time for the F3 release...

I don't think there hasn't been much talk about racing gamer chairs / cockpit setups in the past year or two, so whatchya got?!

I've been looking at -
Playseats evolution
Gameracer
GT Revolution (still available??)
Ak-200 precise chair
Bob Earl VRC

I'm not going to go above the price range those fall into. Qualities I'm looking for:
Comfort
Storage,
Ability to use for other gaming
Compatability with the buttkicker is also cool.

Ooops, sorry didn't mean to turn this into a what should I buy thread! (But opinions are encouraged!) Anyways let's see what you are rollin with, anyone tried more than one of these (or other rigs for that matter?) Who else feels the need for one of these for F3? I can't be the only one!
I'll probably just stick to the standard controller while playing from my race car bed.
I currently have the original playseat and the microsoft wheel. Love it and very comfortable after hours of drive/playtime. I want the new fanatec wheel, but I'm gonna wait and see what plays out as we get closer to the launch date of Forza 3.

Some good ideas here. The thread is a little old so some of the pics have disappeared but still good stuff.

Too bad the 360 doesn't support the Logitech G25, because I have that wheel in mint shape I'm looking to get rid of.

cool, you ever play non racing games sitting in it? Is it that comfortable?

uhh... yeah about my car set-up...see it doesnt exist...

lol
I have no space in my house for a cool racing setup, so I'm going to sell the real car in my garage so I can do a nice one in there.
I have the Playseat Evo since Forza 2. Still have to put it together. Didn't do it before since my 360 wheel broke after a month of Forza 2. I prob have to soon, also need a new wheel for Forza 3 since I not sure if MS will ever support my G25. May end up getting a 360 wheel from FANTATEC.

Yep.. its pretty cool.

An added bonus is surprisingly, girls love it!! To them its like being in a real arcade or driving a real car. My ex, her cousins and their daughter were over my apt one night. I promise they played PGR4 all night long!!

You'd be surprised man.. The EVO folds up really small. If I had a camera phone (which I will in a couple of days) Id post pictures of it. Make sure to come back check this thread.

Get the 2ND one!! Thats the EVO. Thats exactly what I have, same colour. The seat feels like a real leather covered racing seat out a expensive sports car.

The EVO (the 2nd one) is way better in that the column that holds the steering wheel is alot more stable and the wheel doesnt move around as much. Doesnt sound like much, but it matters alot when using a force feedback wheel. Plus it just feels more solid. If youre a big guy like me, it has more adjustments. And the foot pedals also feel more stable, fit better. The EVO also folds up REALLY small.

Look for the Playseats EVO used on Ebay.. lots of people buy these setups. Use them a few times and sell them for half of the original cost.

If you are looking to buy new.. then checkout:

I think I got mine from Walmart for $249 with free site-to-store shipping.

Amazon also puts them on sale every once in a while for $199 with free shipping. Just wait for one of those deals.

hey i actually just played forza 2 at a friends house the other day and i loved it! i can't wait for 3 to come out, but till then i'm gunna pick up 2 for a couple bucks. my question is, should i get the MS wheel, or do you think there will be a new wheel released with forza 3? because i don't have a whole lot of money to be spending on 2 wheels...

Seriously, I have nowhere to put it, lol. I was so close to picking up the EVO when Amazon had a good price on them maybe a year ago. I knew if I had to keep putting it away and pulling it back out, I would never use it though.

If I was a much craftier person, I would do the ultimate setup and turn my other car into a racing game cockpit. I've floated it around in my head before, some kind of front projector with a rear projection screen mated to the windshield, or just remove the windshield completely. I have a spare wheel and motor assembly from a SEGA Super GT, still have some pedal assemblies floating around, or just mod an off the shelf PC wheel and pedals or something. Or be the ultimate gangsta and find a way to use the real wheel and pedals.

Check out this, prob a lot better built then the MS x360 wheel (mine broke after a month of Forza 2). I will be getting one when Forza 3 comes out if MS still do not support my G25.

Thats their mid price unit.

You can also just get the wheel without pedals which can use the MS x360 or G25 pedals.

But the top end model is pricey but has the Clubsport pedals which look great.

Also the Porsche 911 Turbo S wheels are x360/PS3/PC compatible.

ADD: these sim racer guys liked Forza 3

I use MS's wireless wheel attached to a computer desk. I'd like to upgrade to that Fanatec wheel just mentioned.

Someday I want to buy a gutted Pole Position sitdown arcade cab (Or at least one that's missing a lot of parts where I won't feel guilty about it since its a classic), and convert it to have a 360, PS3, and a PC inside of it for racing sims.

Here is another option if you don't have a lot of room...
http://www.xwstands.com/page11.php

The guy sells them on that big auction thingy for $99 with free shipping.

I am so glad you made this thread every time I use my wheel it slides across the carpet. I looked at some of those cockpits and they are big so I don't the room for it. I like the one that folds for a buck 29 so. The other thing is how long did it take some of you to get used to racing because I still crash all the time.

Light foot on gas and brake. Don't stomp, and if using the x360 wheel no shoes, just socks works best for me. Its all about being smooth. The only probm being online is a lot of pple (not all) drives like crazy, bumper cars...since no black flagging or real serious fatal damage to cars or self.

Thanks for the advice I am tired of getting laughed at by my wife even though she don't play she will giggle while my car looks like chopped hamburger meat. Thanks again.

Man, I really want that Gameracer Elite, but $500 is pretty friggin steep. More and more I think the Evolution will be the way I go...

What's with the fanatec wheels? Just better built? I know many people like to complain about the plastic bearings or whatever in the MS Wheel. Personally I've been very happy with it for the 2-3 months I've owned it.

Right now my setup is an old office chair with the wheel mounted on one of those Table Mate II jobbers. It does the job, but I'm sick of the pedals sliding around and such. Plus the chair ain't all that comfy cozy.

FANATEC uses a belt drive and not gear driven for most of their newer wheels. This would make a very smooth feeling wheel. Also they have a very good motion motor(s) being used for the effects. Also max of 900 degree of rotation (like the G25). I don't have any personal experience with their product, just what I saw at insidesimracing site. I e-mail FANATEC trying to figure out what shipping would cost since they are based out of Germany. Still no replay. Their site is kind of confusing on what is the shipping cost. Its states 0.5 lbs $25 for shipping. Does that mean for every 1/2 lb it cost $25. That would make shipping really expensive since by the looks of some of their gear they can weigh 20lbs plus. That 40x$25=$1000.... Hopefully it was a flat rate of $25, but that seems low for oversea shipping, unless is coming on a slow boat from China...almost hit buy (they only take paypal) but was confused about what the shipping cost was going to be. Most of their products right now are sold out and they are taking pre-orders.

Post what you find out about shipping if you don't mind. I can't imagine I'll want to drop that kind of coin on a wheel, but you never know...

Just justify the cost as being spread out over three systems, if you get the right wheel from FANATEC. One wheel to rule them all...hehehe. For x360/PS3/PC. makes a unified driving cockpit easy.

By the way I also bought two shifter modules for the playseat evo. I also do flight sims, so the two attachements will allow me to set up a HOTAS for the flight stuff.

Sometimes I wish I would have just bought a Playseat.

Well its been a few days since I sent two e-mails to FANATEC concerning shipping cost and I have heard nada from them. If this is any indication of their support, I will not be purchasing anything from them. For a potential customer and they do not respond on inquiries, that really leaves a bad taste . Too bad FANATEC...you know what they say about 1st impressions....

Here's mine

Nah, I'm just kidding. This is actually mine (cause I'm poor and my wife already hates the Rock Band instruments enough without me having a wheel setup in the house):
There is no way my girlfriend would approve of me setting up the steering wheel AND the RB instruments AND the 2 arcade joysticks (I want a third one, for 360 actually). We also have Buzz!... so yea a wheel is out of the question.
