Help with HTSS360 (HTSS2300) Sony HT

I just bought the HTSS360 and I am little confused on what I am doing wrong or if its even possible to do the following.

1. TV connect via hdmi to HTS, HTS to cable box with HDMI in set on SAT.

That works fine

2. Cable box has a component out video which I connect to my TV component in. Then there is an RCA audio out which I want to run to my HTS in either video or possibly the TV in.

I set this up and the problem is I get no video from component 1. Apparently if I power down the HTS Ill get the video, but obviously no sound . I think the HDMI cable is preventing the switch of video on the cable box. Is there a setting to turn off the hdmi ports when set to another audio option on the HTS?

Thank you.

Why are you trying to hook this up in this fashion?

Maybe I dont make sense, but my box gives me both the component and hdmi out, sometimes I will watch a show not in hd expanded via the component out imo it sometimes looks better.

Can I set up both? Is there a better way I should be doing this?

Any advice would be great, thanks...

It would be my guess that the HDMI cable is interrupting the analog audio signal path for one reason or another.

Keep in mind that HDMI was not developed as the next step in performance beyond component video. It was developed at the insistence of the motion picture industry to prevent piracy so the interaction between components tends to cause the problems you're experiencing.

www.hdguru.com is an interesting site in that the author, Gary Merson, shares an enlighted point of view on trends in the consumer electronics industry. I can't say I agree with him on every point but his observations on video tend to be spot on, especially his opinion of HDMI.

Thanks I will go through this. I'm just frustrated because I've tried even an optical audio with hdmi video to the TV and the cable box is not sending the audio to the receiver. I'm wondering if my cable box is just garbage or something.

Most STB has a setting for optical out.
STB ---> optical ---> HTS
V

I thought I would just post a follow up. After a few hours of playing around with my settings, I've determined its due to the junk Samsung Cable Box Time Warner gave me. By switching off the hdmi sound to the the dolby setting, I get the sound via an optical port and video direct to TV with HDMI or Component. The second HDMI port on my TV goes to the Sony Reciever and I get my Phillips upconverting DVD player to transfer sound via HDMI to the reciever then to the TV. That works fine which is why I am pretty sure its my cable box failing to send proper sound out. Ill do a couple of more checks to make sure, but this is just an update in case anyone else is having trouble.
