If you are looking for a solid player with great video and audio and aren't interested in NF streaming, DVD-A, or SACD, that is an unbelievable price. I love mine.

agreed, but the release of the 1611 for only $100 more with SACD, DVD-A, Netflix, and 3D has me sitting out this bargain.

2010ci is made in china by funai. it is funai's high end model - identical to onkyo bd sp807 and marantz bd7004.

In respects of blu ray performance, identical to pioneer 23fd except the 23 has better tweaking. DVD performance is very, very similar with a slight edge to the denon in my humble opinion. Audio is very similar as well.

2010 is not as finicky when it comes to playing titles as the Pioneer and the 2010 has better video processing with the ABT than the 1611. 1611 doesn't have the ABT chipset. Now the 2011 is a different story (but much more).

Winston,

How does the Denon DBP2010CI compare to the Oppo BDP-83 in the SD DVD performance department ? I have a vast SD DVD collection, 115" screen and I was set to buy the Oppo 83. I just sold my Pio 51FD so I am looking to get a better performance than what I was getting with the 51FD. The closeout price is very tempting but not looking to save a few bucks but better performance. But I doubt I will get much better performance from the Oppo vs. Denon DBP2010CI. What do you think ? Thanks.

I think the 2010 will give you a hair better dvd performance, but lacks the extensive tweaking menu that 51 has, which might equalize the two on that big of a screen. The Oppo 83 is superior to the 2010.

Thanks, I will go for the Oppo then.

No one knows what type of video chip the 1611 is, it definitely is not an ABT chip. So in that respect i dont think it will be better than the 2010. I would just wait for the 2011, thats what i am doing for now. Got a sony 1000es in the meantime which is better than the 2010.

I just bought this player new, but it has an old firmware. So, I'm trying to go through the update process. I'm stuck on trying to create the CD.

I have 2 computers - one with XP the other Windows 7. I tried downloading
IMGBurn and UltraISO, but I get an error message such as 'error verifying ISO immage'. The Denon instructions suggesst Roxio or Nero. But, it looks like you have to purchase those and I hate to buy software just to create my firmware update CD.

Can anyone give me some tips on how to create the CD?

I never tried the CD method but you could always just run an ethernet cable to it & update it online.
I agree with TheMoose, try it online.

Edit: I took a closer look at the file and it's not an ISO. You just need to create a data disc and you'll be fine. The standard Windows data disc burner should work.

Am now downloading an update for my player.
As far as I know I was up to date so I think this is a new update.
Anyone know what it is for?
Unlike my Integra DHC 80.1 Denon pretty much keeps the updates a mystery.
Not 100% sure what the update was for but last night I had all kinds of problems playing Kick Ass & after the update it plays fine.
Has anybody been able to find out what the new firmware will do?
What does Denon say?
First of all, thank all of you for this very informative thread. I read thorough all 29 pages and I feel like I know exactly what I'm getting into with this 2010CI.

I have this player on order from an on-line retailer for 299 no tax or shipping, arriving later this week. It will be replacing my Panasonic BD35. I really had no issues with the BD image quality of the Panny but the Panny could not output HDMI and 2-channel analog (for CDs) simultaneously. I couldn't just view a DRD and then listen to CDs over analog outs without changing settings in the menu. I'm really looking forward to the improved image quality but most of all to the Burr-Brown DAC processed analog audio. I plan on keeping up with all the latest firmware updates and keeping an SD card in the player to stay away from freezes and the like.

Again, thanks for all of your opinions and posts, they've been invalueable in helping me with my decision. Just excited about playing with my new toy.

Hi everyone, first I want to thank those that take the time and effort to educate the rest of us. The information available on this forum is just fantastic.

Now, to my issue. Unfortunatly my first post is regarding a malfunctioning DBP-2010CI that is about a month old. The player has functioned perfectly until last night when it would not load a disc (blu-ray or DVD, tried multiple discs) and when there is no disc inserted, I get a 'Loader Error" that is displayed on screen with a series of dashes on the units display. I cannot access the units menu system at all. There is also a very ominous 'clunk' that repeats several times prior to the error message being displayed after either the unit being sewtched on or the tray being closed.

I have tried disconnecting the power for 12 hrs, resetting to factory settings, resetting the power multiple times, cursing and swearing but nothing has changed the units malfunction.

Anyone seen or heard of similar behavior from this or other Denon players? I haven't been able to find anything even remotely close to my issue on the interweb. I will be contacting Denon support tomorrow or Tuesday as time permits but I thought I would try here as well. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Tim

I'm thinking of replacing my Denon 2900 with the 2010 as I will be using this primarily for DVD playback. Will I see an improvement in DVD PQ with this? I'm assuming the 1080p upconversion should help a bit (the 2900 was only 1080i).

For those of you who have upgraded the firmware via download and burning to a CD, how long did the unit take to read the firmware from the disk? I tried updating the firmware last night. The player read the disk, recognized the new version of firmware, and started reading. But, it seemed stuck in the "reading" mode. The player display shows "F/W-UP" and on the monitor it shows:

FW VERSION UP MODE F/W Name:E5KA0UD Ver:1.009

1. ALL
Version:1.012 E5KA0UD1012DA1.b20

Reading...

I finally powered down after 40 minutes. I used to upgrade the firmware on my Panasonic 35 this way and it never took longer than 15 minutes. I could hear the tick tick of the player when I put my ear close to it. It did sound as if it was reading the CD.

I powered down after around 40 minutes because I needed to go to sleep.

^^
Nevermind.

I re-burned the update onto another disk and tried that. Update worked. It took about 10 minutes.

I've got to say that I'm really enjoying this player. Although there is no quantum improvement in the blu-ray picture quality from my Panny BD35 the sound improvement is quite noticeable. The biggest difference is in the SQ I'm getting while playing CDs over the analog outputs. Its like night and day. I also can hear a definite improvement in HD audio out over HDMI. Although I can't explain why this would be (my old Panny and the Denon were both passing HD audio digitally to the receiver to decode), I know what I hear. I have yet to play a SD-DVD on it yet which is where I'm also expecting an improvement in video quality due to the 2010's Anchor Bay chip.

Is there a way to keep the front panel display off on this player without having to cycle through the Pure Direct button every time you turn it on? The dimmer button itself doesn't have an Off setting. My previous Denon DVD player had the panel off button with the dimmer settings.

Hey, I just ordered my 2010 this morning!

Winston, or anyone, are you saying that you think the 1611 might be a better blu-ray/DVD player than the 2010?

Or are you saying that with the addtion of SACD, DVD-A, Netflix and 3D it is a better buy than the 2010 - but not as good of a blu-ray/DVD player?

If that makes sense, lol...

Probably on to bigger and better things..

I can't believe the improvement in SQ when moving from the Panasonic BD35 to the Denon. It's almost as if I've not only upgraded the player but the speakers as well. I re-listening to some of my old CDs and hearing things that I never heard before.

BTW, I think they mean that an additional $100 will buy features that the 2010 doesn't have. I don't think the blu-ray picture quality of the 1611 would be an upgrade over the 2010, and neither would the PQ of DVD playback considering the 1611 doesn't use AB processing.

Thinking of sending boack my Panny 85 to get this baby. Will I see a nice difference in PQ and sound quality. I know the Netflix thing will wear off of me in a couple of weeks so that is no issue--Sound and pic quality are.
Worth the $125 more? thx guys and gals...

I have a Panny 350, which is reportedly similar to the 85 inm respects of dvd quality. the 350 is very good and nearly as good as the 2010.

i would guess you would gain some analog audio quality by moving to the denon.

you would be foregoing streaming, wireless connectivity, and fast load times.
thanks
I know i will not miss Streaming after awhile.
I would gain nothing in the digital audio dept. because the AVR 1911 doesnt have analog in's?
thx
