My HDMI VS OPTICAL/DIG COAX COMPARO.....

Hey guys, I have a Pioneer upconvert DVD player connected to a Pioneer Elite 81TXV. Ever since I went with the HDMI, I've been disappointed with the overall sound, especially the bass. I now have the DVD connected to my Kuro with HDMI and went back to coax for the sound. What a difference!! Better surround sound, better bass. Wonder if I would be missing anything with sound with Blu-Ray.

Sounds like something is jacked up on one of your components, or a setting is wrong. HDMI and coaxial shouldn't have any difference on standard definition DVDs.

+1 or a setting is off somewhere on the AVR. Optical is limited in bandwidth compared to HDMI, so if you are set-up for DTS-HD/TrueHD you will only be getting the "core" DTS/DD, but outside of that, there shouldn't be any difference between audio that can transmit through optical, especially slanted away from HDMI.

Like what could be jacked up, it's pretty straight forward. I checked the settings and everything looks good.

What are you comparing, exactly?

What were you passing via HDMI? Bitstream or MPCM?

Of course you would.

Of course you would.

I wasn't satisfied with the sound I was getting via HDMI, so I switched back to digital coax, and there was the sound that I was looking for. The manual isn't clear about the bitstream or pcm, I have it set to auto. I have the Pioneer 410-k upconvert.
