HDMI of HTPC vs. Xbox 360 much quieter

I have both my HTPC and Xbox 360 connected to my Onkyo receiver. When I play on the Xbox I turn down the receiver to around 30, but when I change it back to HTPC I can hardly hear and need to ramp up the volume to 55-60 almost double of the Xbox. This happens with HDMI or SPDIF, so it makes me think the output is just that much quieter, although I feel like this should not be the case. With the volume on VMC set to full(50) seems like I should not need to turn my receiver that high.

Any thoughts or does anyone see the same thing?

Well if you are using XP MCE then check the WAV volume setting and confirm it's 100.

I have the same issue in Win 7 and at this point live with it... What Audio mixer are you using out of the box, FFDSHOW, etc.?

this has happened to me always with my denon and HK equipment too...but to be quite frank...on my HK my reciever is around-35Db for the xbox and for movies from the bluray or hd-dvd it is almost always at -20Db so i dunno, maybe the xbox puts out a stronger signal inherently....???????

Not using any mixer at this point, keeping build as clean as possible. Only have built in stuff at this point.

What I have always found interisting is that when using and digital out whereyou are using a receiver I feel like VMC should not be able to adjust the volume at all.

The whole idea is to get a pure digital output to your receiver and being able to have a lower volume is not pure.

When I had MCE 2005 I remember the volume did not affect the output.

If you have HDMI or SPDIF in your sound properties set as the default then changing the volume should not make a difference in Vista. Make sure the program you're using to play your movies is also set to the same HDMI or SPDIF in its audio properties. If not, the other source set in the program will process the audio and then pass it on to the default sound device.

It is possible the 360 boosts volume output as it internally processes video game audio and converts it to DD or DTS for a receiver - exception should be if you play a DVD movie, as it should pass-through that audio straight to the receiver if the 360 is worth a damn for movie playback. I don't own one.

I notice that if I play a disc in PowerDVD it's much louder than my mkv+flac rips in 7MC. It's weird because everything is at 100% in FFDSHOW and the Windows mixer. Weird.

Its been set as a default for some time and I only use VMC, no extra player software of anykind. Where else should I look on the player?

I forget if VMC has its own audio setup or if it just defaults to the sound default. Verify that by going through the audio setup under settings. To verify, you say changing the volume in VMC is lowering the audio level of your HDMI output to the Receiver?

Also, what are you playing through VMC? DVD, Blu-ray, MKV, DiVX, avi, etc? VMC is not really a 'player' and uses codecs from other programs. You haven't installed anything such as PowerDVD, SPDIFER, AC3 Filter, FFDShow? Nothing? This is a clean install with nothing added?
