Best LCD for gaming (out of these choices)

Thread Starter
Samsung LN40B530
Samsung LN40B550
Samsung LN40B630
Samsung LN40B640

Which has the least amount of input lag/response time? I want my games to look better and on a bigger screen but not at the expense of losing an edge on FPS's and sports games.

The 40B550 is a nice tv but it's not for gaming. I had the sam exact set and had to return it back to amazon cause the ghosting and blur was horrible. I even had the panel replaced by samsung and no change. I can not say for the other sets though. Hope it helps narrow your decision.

Out of just those, I'd go with the B630.

well it depends on which panel u get if u get a SPVA panel or S panel it will have higher input lag, where as the AMVA or A panel as comparable contrast but has about 50% less input lag.

O rly?

Not that I doubt a fellow forum member, but can you point me to the source for this knowledge? I was under the impression that the varying panel types was an A series thing, and that all B's were essentially S panels.

well one of european review sites , http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/news/samsu...0090526151.htm mentioned that the panel used in B750 was a 3rd generation AMVA panel.although the author of the review said it unofficialy in the comment section.

So, how does one tell which panel they are getting in a TV? Especially if they were to order one from Amazon or something?

Only way to tell is to physically check the back of the unit.
But there's no way to tell BEFORE the unit would be shipped by Amazon? I suppose calling is the only way... It's pretty annoying that you could be ordering the same model and get possibly an inferior or superior panel.

Even if you call they would have to physically OPEN the box and look at the back of the TV. I tried to get BB to tell me before I purchased my LN40A550 and they told me the same thing.

When you buy an LCD no matter the brand you risk getting a poor panel ( CMO panels for example).

Sony,Samsung,LG,Panasonic,Sharp and just about all other brands have a contracts with various panel manufactures.. it's just that Samsung or any of them will never tell us what panels they use for what manufacturing lines. I remember I bought a A550 with a CMO panel and it was horrid.

To my knowledge Manufactures have panel contracts with:

Samsung: AUO/S-PVA(LCD)/CMO
Sony: AUO/S-PVA(LCD)/Sharp/CMO?)
Panasonic: LG's IPS or Panasonics IPS-A
LG: ^

In my opinion, it's almost a gamble with buying LCD's today.. you could get a poor panel or a great panel in the same model line.. It's almost like a scam.
That's why I don't like comparing Sony:Samsung or LG:Panasonic ::Sharp.. Whoever is best based on the panel you get.

It is a pain but I don't think that amazon or any company would be able to open up & tell you. It's a little negative but meh what can we do.

well the only panels sony uses is AUO(AMVA)/samsung panel(SPVA),to date i haven't heard of sony using CMO panels .only in 32inch like the M series is where sony IMO appears to have used CMO panel, based on the news that sony was considering ordering 32inch panels.

Well, coming from the monitor world, I can say you don't want a *PVA panel if input lag is important. Get an S-IPS panel in a LG TV instead.
Sony and Toshiba offer better game modes than Samsung (more tweakability) and they offer better overall PQ than LG LCD's IMO (only LG I would get, is the LH90). But yeah, if input lag is at the top of your list, an LG S-IPS or Panasonic LCD would be your best bet.
If you are looking for a gaming tv, you are looking at the wrong manufacturer. Samsung is known to have some of the worst input lag.
