Nice review Joe!

Joe knows his equipment.

With the rate that formats change, I'd be hard pressed to spend the money for one of the top rated players, knowing that the format will likely go away before the equipment reaches the end of it's useful lifespan.

If the pictures are that inconsistent, then you need to turn off auto mode on your camera. Shoot both pictures with the SAME manual settings.

joerod,

Fantastic job! You are on my short list of forum members that I can always count on for an unbiased opinion. Again, well done.

Respectfully,
Willie

They usually are not that inconsistent. Follow the link in my sig for more examples of the screenshots I have taken.

I am not home yet (to do some comparison shots) but someone suggested I post a few reminder pics at how well the 09FD can look...

The 09 SS are very good indeed and the player is a champ, no objection here (i own one, for the record - euro version LX91, bought after your excellent review).

Anyway i have the feeling that this Denon is somewhat sharper, more fine detail. May be because of the enhancer control that i suppose is as good (or better) as it was on the 5910 where it made miracles with SD dvd's.

In conclusion... I really enjoyed doing this Summer Shootout/Comparison. I think I may have to start doing it twice a year. Maybe Summer and then Winter? I look forward to reviewing future players even though I truly believe we are at the pinnacle of pic Q. Imagine if they were to improve even by a small margin! Thanks for reading... And thanks for everyone's support.

Once again, Joerod..
another excellent comparitive review.
Just wanted to add my thanks to all your efforts.

joerod,

By any chance, does your display provide for a picture by picture (not picture in picture) where you could run both players at the same time? That would tell a lot.

And again both players put out an incredible "best I ever seen" image and it is near impossible for me to pick between the two! Maybe I will have to flip a coin...

Joe, how much slower was the 3800 vs the Oppo? Also, will you post your findings/thoughts on SD upconversion for the various players?

The Denon is 3X or 4X slower than the OPPO. I have both.

If the "performance" is identical, then why not take into account the price? If you are actually paying money for the players, there's only one real choice. If you don't care about the money, just keep the Pioneer and send me $2000 and we'll call it even.

For the record I have purchased these players. I don't know why you would say "actually paying money" for them. Which is why I get upset at times when some post rude comments. It wasn't easy getting the last one and my electronics budget has been surpassed for 2009. And we are only July 1st! Trust me, I am taking everything into account.

Dude, I didn't mean anything by it. I know some people beta test products and such, and don't like to talk about that publicly.
Maybe a player could be on loan, borrowed from a friend, "in review", or whatever.

Hey, I wish I had half your electronics budget .
Thanks for the reviews and comparisons. Your work is much appreciated.

Based on the info I've read thus far, the DenonA1 is overpriced by a large margin IMO. Requiring that it be paired with a high end Denon AVR to even work properly is outrageous to me.
Good luck making your choice.
