Possible issue with the GT2200 video card. Use the "Search This Thread" button with the key word "computer" in the various Denon threads and you'll get a better sense of how PC connections are with the Denon AVRs.

Thank you for the advice. I think I might not have wrote the ipod issue correctly. When I go to that input, I can see all the denon/ipod controls (music, videos, etc), and I can see the data on the screen such as song.mp3, I hit play & it says its playing the counter moves showing that the song is playing but their is no sound. The video when I hit play shows nothing.

When your saying to change the input mode to analog, are you saying on my Ipod input (which i think by default is analog) I should change it? This is on page 40 of the manual I think.

On the DVD input (where my PC is) I am not sure where to change the audio input to analog.

Thanks,
Rich

One other question, my Blue Ray DvD (which works fine when connected directly to the TV HDMI input) plays just fine but the audio, only is playing the sound effects. I am watching Transformers on Blueray & all the music & sound effects work (crashes, etc) but the voices are not present.

Any idea why I have audio sound effects but not voices?

I am using the HDP HDMI input for the Blue Ray player.

Thanks,
Rich

I'm referring to the Denon INPUT MODE setting for each Denon source input name you are using.

What surround mode is displayed on the Denon front panel?

Thanks,

It was in surround mode & needs to be in stereo mode (I am in the process of installing a center & two rear speakers). I am all set with the DVD. The PC seems to be another matter but I will keep plugging away, thank you for the help!

I have a Blu Ray player that outputs the video via HDMI and I was wondering if the Denon 2310CI receiver can take the video output from the player via HDMI and downconvert the video signal to S-video so that i can then output from the receiver into my CRT TV via S-video when watching Standard Def DVD's?

In simple terms, can the 2310CI convert HDMI video to S-video?

Thanks!

post #2708 of 7016
There is no downconversion of either HDMI audio or video; however, if you output the video via a component cable, the 2310 would be able to downconvert to S-video.

Although you could also simply use the audio from the VCR inputs, the optical connection from the TV would also allow you to get DD 5.1 on the HD OTA channels.

Done! Ran an optical cable back to the AVR just as I did with my old Yammy -- thanks. I thought this generation would offer a change to that rigamorol.

So silly me ..I didn't have all my questions prior to purchase, eh. Similar to my Pioneer FP with crappy OTA tuner mapping -- no info on that either b4 buying it.

Appreciating your "input".

May I ask why two VCR?

Works fine now -- thanks! Seems my video cables were faulty too -- cheap stuff.
Found a much better set and used VCR input for VCR#1, DVR input for VCR#2. Then set the video up for conversion and scaling (still think my tv does a better job).

Hi,

I'm in the process of selecting a new AVR and Blu-ray player and I'm leaning heavily toward the 2310CI. If you buy a Denon AVR & Blu-ray player now from an authorized retailer, you get 20% off both. So I'm thinking I'll get the 2310 and the the BDP-1610. I'll be connecting these to a Panasonic TC-P50G10 plasma.

So my first question(s) - what are your opinions of this combo? Does anyone here have these two components? Any reason I shouldn't buy either one of these?

One of the things I like most about the 2310 is the upscaling and conversion to HDMI. I'll be connecting a Wii (component) and a Roku (720p HDMI), among other things, and I think both will benefit from the upconversion.

Second question(s) - what does the 2310 do with a source that is already 1080p? Does it ignore it and pass it through or does it still put it through the up-conversion process just with no discernible improvement?

Thanks for your thoughts.
Ken

1. Don't have the combo, but CNET rates the G10 as Very Good (in fact might upscale even better than the ABT chip in the 2310). The BDP-1610 does not have any known issues with the 2310.

2. The upscaling of the ABT chip will benefit the SD video (Wii), not HD video so much. The scaler can be turned OFF for 1080p sources so they simply get passed through with no processing.

Thanks JD...

I'm surprised to hear that the G10 might have a better upscaler. I figured the G10 was decent, but thought the ABT chip was one of the best chips on the market.

Manually turning off the upscaling for 1080p sources makes sense. Thanks for the information.

Hi I am new to this very informative forum. Thanks to all involved.
I am considering this for my 1st AVR.
Yeah I know I was slow to decide to sell my Carver amp, tuner and Klipsch speakers.
Can anyone recommend the best authorized internet dealer with good pricing?

I know this isn't the speaker forum but I am considering these.
Premier Acoustic PA-6F Home Theater System. Any pro's or cons?

Thanks!

I'm am officially an owner now!

Just went through manual setup with my 890... Going to do Audessey when I get a tripod. Followed the guide on http://www.batpigworld.com/ (amazing site, very helpful!), while also following the manual, and I have a buncha questions...

First, this is my setup:

5 speakers + sub
cable box (Motorola DCT3416) --------> 890 (HDMI)
blu-ray player (Samsung BD-P1600) ---> 890 (HDMI)
dvdr (Sony RDR-HX750) --------------> 890 (HDMI)
CD changer (old Pio) -----------------> 890 (digital coax)
Xbox 360 ----------------------------> 890 (component)

890 ---> TV (Samsung PN63A650) (HDMI)

Now, my questions...

1) Is it possible to assign 2 different names to inputs if one is component and the other HDMI? What I mean is this: I plug in my DVD into HDMI slot labeled DVD, and I plug in my xb360 into component slots labeled DVD. How do I then name my connections through the 890 GUI so that one name refers to the HDMI DVD connection and the other to the Component DVD connection?

2) When doing the speaker level-tone test (plays static sound so you can adjust individual speaker volume), I noticed that the static sound on the left side (front left, surround left) is different from the right. I don't mean the volume, I mean the actual static sound. Is this supposed to be the case?

3) Between my DVDR, TV, and AVR, which piece has the best upscaling/upconversion/video processing?

4) If I'm watching a DVD in my DVDR, and have upscaling/upconversion turned OFF on my DVDR, and the 890 settings are on their defaults, what will the DVD video be scaled to? 1080i? 1080p? something else?

5) In order to see the upscaling of the 890, should I set my TV's "picture settings" to "Just Scan" or 16:9? I want to compare the image quality to see if I can notice a difference, and I'm thinking the way to do it is to turn OFF upscaling/upconversion on every piece but one. Does it matter if DNIe is on/off?

Ok well, that's it for the question bomb (for now, heh). Compared to my other receiver, I am very happy with the sound of the 890. It also improved my sub's bass... I don't know how, but now, the things that were lacking bass, aren't. The biggest difference I noticed was with normal TV channels. All the things I hear now feel natural, bass present where it is supposed to be. The 890 showed me what I was missing.

Even though the manual setup took me a while (after effects of NYE might have had something to do with it...), BPW took the fear out of it and I think I have a good grasp of how to mess with the settings now. So thanks to batpig, and to the people who gave me advice on my purchase.

Haven't slept for almost 24 hours, not planning on going to sleep until the 2nd or so...got a new toy to play with!!

Happy New Year to everyone here!!!!

1. The HDMI, component, and optical/coax inputs are assignable so you don't have to use the input labels on the jacks you plug them in to. Use the DVD input source name for one and perhaps VCR for the other. You can also relable the VCR input source name as well to say xBox360.

2. Most likely it's simply because you're hearing the tone from a different side of the room.

3. You tell us. You're there, we're not. Try them all out and decide for yourself.

4. The AVR defaults to whatever the highest resolution is of your TV.

5. The video chip in the 890 only effectively upscales 480p video so anything higher than that won't be improved much. Any source that can send 720p or higher you'll generally want to just pass through as is to the TV and let the TV do the upscaling.

6. Audyssey MultEQ applies sub filters which is most likely the reason for the difference in bass sounds you're hearing.

If you review the past 20 pages or so you'll get an idea of who folks are using (generally 6Ave, Electronics Expo, and J&R), just depends on who's got the best deal at the time.

Thanks for the reply. Yes I did sift thru the pages. I saw everyone is around $850.
I saw on bing one seller $583 but after seeing reviews i don't
trust them. Thanks again for a great forum!

Can't find any reference in the manual.

Also, is the 980 firmware-updateable? If not, is it a worthwhile to trade for the 2310?

Yes, labels can be assigned for the pre-set FM stations for the 890 (p. 38) and for the 2310 (p. 40).

The 890 does not have a RS-232 jack so it's firmware can only be updated by sending in the 890 to an Authorized Repair Center, whereas the 2310 can be updated by the owner as it does have an RS-232 jack. Most likely the only update that will ever be provided for the 2310/890 will be the one that is available now (click on the link in my sig for more details). So if you don't have any of the issues listed, or if you don't mind simply sending PCM to the 890 vice bitstreaming, there's no reason to have the firmware update applied.

Open box deals are generally fairly safe as well. Most Denons are likely returned because the buyer didn't know how to set it up and didn't know about receiving help from these threads.

how can you tell in the store what firmware the receiver has ? I'm picking up the receiver in the next few days but want to make sure I don't have to send it in for a firmware update right away if I can spot it somewhere on the box.
Thanks! and Happy New Year .
post #2725 of 7016
Click on the 2310 link in my sig for directions on how to determine the Main Ver #; however, it's highly unlikely that Denon has updated any of the models you'll find in stores now with the current firmware update, although installing it on your own is relatively easy. Also, if you have all HD sources, you should really consider the 1910 (and save yourself some $$$) as you won't benefit from the video chip in either model.

I want to get batpig' harmony commands added to my Harmony one. When I go into the support area of my logitech account, it say my setup support period has ended and doesn't even give me an email address to contact. What email address should I use to request they add the commands to my account??

Not sure if I am posting this in the correct location, But hope that someone can help. Has anyone connected a "Sirius Connect Home Tuner" with a Denon AVR-2307CI? The Denon tuner does not use a Din connector supplied with the Sirius tunre, and I cannot find anywhere on the net that has a "Patch" cord that would work. Any suggestions would really be appreciated..... Thanks!

If I have a Laserdisc player( well, I DO have one actually!) and it's not that I want to live in the past but I have 100+ movies and I am pretty sure the 2310 or 890 has better scaling/transcoding than my Sammy 61A750 ( IIRC, batpig has the 67" version ). Could you (or batpig, if you see this) speculate how my use of s-vhs out to either of these( I know, they virtually identical-You guys have taught me alot over the last 6-7 hours!) would impact my PQ? Thanks, really AVS is where i come to learn and I appreciate you guys.

Laramie

I would suggest you Reset the Microprocessor first and then rerun AUTO SETUP again and see if that helps.
