*OFFICIAL* Denon AVR 2310CI / 890 Owner's Thread - Page 108

Can someone clarify this for me. on this thread at page? 85
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...=1080i&page=85

towards bottom of page "whoa81" asks if receiver will convert his signal from cable company which is 1080i to 1080p. jdsmoothie's reply is confusing. Does it convert it or not? this video on you tube at around 1:30 leads me to believe that is does. Anything special need to be done to have receiver upconvert it if indeed does perform that function?

yes, it can scale any source to 1080p, including 1080i > 1080p deinterlacing.

the point JD was making was that you might not actually SEE a difference! If you have a 1080p TV, it is ALREADY doing a 1080p conversion on a 1080i input, so the only way it would look better is if (1) the Denon does 1080i>1080p better than your TV and (2) if you know what to look for to notice the improvements. It's not something that is going to reach out and smack you in the face, 1080i will already look pretty darn good

Thanks for the info. One other question. so how about when I watch standard non-hd channels on my tv, will the receiver upconvert that, cause I don't think my tv is upconverting standard channels.

sounds like you need to pay a visit to the video section of my FAQ
http://batpigworld.com/fadq.html#video
If you have a 1080p TV then it must upscale every video resolution fed to it to 1080p in order to display it, so if you don't have either the cable box or the 2310 upscaling the video, then the TV will. And bp was correct, in that the intent of my post you noted was that if there was going to be any noticable change in picture quality it would be from upscaling the SD channels to 1080p rather than an HD 1080i channel to 1080p.
Thanks, the video FAQ really cleared it up for me. So the same is for my ps3 then? when I view a SD dvd my ps3 converts it to 1080p but it will never be of blueray quality?. when you say in your FAQ to test out the various components to see which one does the best job, do I need to tell my tv to not convert it since my receiver is or vice versa? I have the TC-P50S1 panasonic, does that have a better video processing chip than denon 2310?

no need to tell the TV, it does it automatically since it HAS TO display at 1920x1080. that is the ONLY resolution it can do!

So, for example, if you set your PS3 to upscale, it outputs the SD DVD at 1080p and your TV just displays the image without scaling it. If you set your PS3 to not upscale, it outputs the DVD at 480p and your TV will automatically scale it to 1080p (1920x1080) and display it. On a 50" display, most likely you will not see a difference either way.

You will never have upscaling that will truly make SD signals look like "true" HD. A really good SD DVD transfer can look excellent, close to HD, with good upscaling on a medium-sized display. SD television broadcasts are generally so crappy to begin with that they still look cruddy when upscaled, but a good scaler can sometimes clean up some of the junk (noise and jaggies).

I'll just chime in here about the video being run through the 2310 vs direct to the TV...My Verizon DVR (being replaced with a Tivo on Thursday) switches back to 720p automatically whenever I change inputs on the 2310. So, I have to manually change the video setting back to 1080i everytime I'm watching cable. There's an HDMI handshake issue with the DVR.

Anyway, this past Saturday it was really pissing me off, and I went from the DVR direct to the TV bypassing the receiver. Before I made the switch, it just so happens that Clear and Present Danger was on, not a great HD transfer imo. After the change, CaPD looked worse going into the TV directly. There was more noise on the screen. I really couldn't believe the difference it made. I switched it back so that the DVR went into the 2310, and the picture was definitely better/clearer.

This is just my own observation. Try it for yourself and see if you notice any difference. I'm curious if others notice anything changing as far as PQ.
good stuff!..thanks for info..I'll have to check if ps3 has better video processing chip than the tv because even though I mostly likely won't notice the difference I guess it still makes sense to have the best chip doing the converting to 1080p. is in in the settings some where in ps3? or does ps3 do it automatically?

Well that will be interesting, but I've got an 890 and no local Denon repair. My firmware is 00.45. If there is a firmware fix, then probably what I will do is return the 890 to BB and order a 2310 from an online retailer so I can do the firmware upgrade myself.

I am running the TV signal from an SA 3250 via DVI/HDMI cable to the 2310 and then HDMI (50') to Sony 60A2000. Originally set STB for native output but had handshaking problems when switching btw std and HD channels. Changed 480i output to 480p on STB to fix problem. I can see a big difference in the analog channels after upconversion from the 2310. NCIS reruns on USA look much better as well as the digital movies on Star and Encore. Not HD natch, but better.

I finally got my firmware updated- it took 8 attempts-after the 1st failed update my receiver was bricked - I kept trying and kept getting update failure or some message like that.....I was about to give up and prepare to ship it to Denon when finally it completed all 5 steps. Nerve wracking to say the least.

OK. Mostly set up with 2310ci, rc-10's, fios hd, panny 46G15, panny BD60 and wii. All (except wii) hooked up via HDMI to AVR and then out to hdtv. The wii is hooked up to the avr with this component cable (http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...seq=1&format=2). Looking at the diagram on page 6 of the 2310ci manual, I've got the component cable hooked up to the avr using the component video in, I've tried both 1(dvd) and 2(dvr) and both work (assigned through input assigns to rca-1 / rca-2, respectively). Video works but no audio. When video is hooked up to 1(dvd) component, I had the last two component cables hooked up to dvd analog audio connectors; with 2(drv) to the dvr analog audio connectors. No sound. What am I doing wrong here? Thanks.

remember the following:

1 - the rca analog (red/white) audio inputs are NOT assignable, you are stuck with the name by the input jack

2 - the component video inputs ARE assignable, so they can be configured to match up with any of those audio inputs

3 - an HDMI input will take "priority" over component video or analog audio

So, what you need to do is find a name that is NOT used by any of your HDMI devices, and that also has red/white analog audio inputs, and use that. And then, assign the component video to match. Check that nothing else (e.g. a digital audio input) is assigned to that name that could interfere (in the Input Assign matrix) and then also set Input Mode to ANALOG just to be sure.

Awesome. Exactly what I needed. My 8-yr old will be very happy that the Wii now works properly. Thanks.

After the first failed attempt, as the instructions note, did you try the "Specific Update Method" listed in paragraph 3? That is the alternate installation method used if the 1st method fails.

Hey jd- yes I did the "Specific Update Method" -it failed the 1st 2 or 3 times...on the attempt before the successful update I got midway thru step 3 and Windows said something like "program is not responding". Seems like I read somewhere that the update software was very finicky so I disabled the screen saver, shut down all background programs and finally got it to complete..........whew

Yeah I actually worked that out after posting - realized you can only change the current source input settings from that menu, and you need to cycle each source then edit its settings. However, games are not really very playable with the amount of lag introduced by the conversion, so that's the main reason I won't hook them up.

I thought about that, but I play games and watch movies pretty regularly so I'd need to jump between 60 and 24 a lot. I think I need to try a different HDMI port and maybe cable, because after I posted I was getting syncing problems in 1080p60 as well. Seems intermittent though, because a couple of times I watched extended scenes and played an hour of games with no problem. I think there's issues with the PS3 generally, because I used to get intermittent handshake problems with both my original PS3 and this newer slim on my Pioneer AVR as well - just not as bad as with the Denon.

Also, its definitely the input that is losing sync on the front panel of the AVR, not the output to the TV. My XBox and cable box are rock solid too, so I'll just try some port swapping first and see if that fixes it.

Thanks for the suggestions, though!

How is the sound on the 2310 is warm with good midrange and soft trebles like on marantz 5004 / 5006 or...

I know this is going back a few months. Did you ever get this resolved? I have the same exact problem on some of my SD channels. It prevents me from using the scaler function because the green vertical line is too distracting. I have already updated the receiver firmware. Motorola cable box DCH3416 to Denon 2310 to Sony 50A2020 all via HDMI. Anybody?

Lets not go there. Many members frequenting this board swear there is no sound difference between different recievers.

The only way Denon will decide to fix this is if enough people call up their customer support and bitch about about it. Give 'em a call!

I agree completely with batpig on this. The issue has been reported to Denon, but unless 'enough' people complain about it, they are probably not going to fix it.
OK guys, so nothing has worked with regards to getting the handshake issue between my Motorola/Comcast DCX-3400 and the Denon 2310 to output correctly. I was told it was because the HDMI version on the cable box is 1.2 (or older) and the Denon is 1.3...Is this correct?

Since I can't get it resolved I am looking at trying other routes. I want you opinion. Which is better: 1) Going HDMI directly to the plasma and running an optical for audio to the receiver, or 2) Going with composite and optical to the receiver (I would like to make sure that I can watch tv and listen to it through the tv speakers without having to have the receiver on)?

Keep in mind in number 1 I would be connecting the cable box to HDMI 2 on the plasma and having HDMI 1 coming from the receiver. Let me know.

Thank you.

if you want to watch TV without having to turn the receiver on, Option 1 is the obvious choice.
I notice that at monoprice.com there are different guage and category HDMI cables. What would be the guage and category I should purchase to produce the best video/audio?

the gauges don't make any difference in A/V quality, the thicker cables are just sturdier and may be more robust for a long run (e.g. going 20ft+ through the walls). If you don't have any long runs, just stick to the standard 28awg cables, they are much easier to work with (the thicker cables are pretty stiff).

I also recommend you grab a few of the HDMI "port savers" if you have any tight runs, they make connection a lot easier and relieve tension on the connector if there needs to be any tight bends: http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...seq=1&format=2

Just got my 2310..can't even get my remote to work..pretty bad..popped in batteries and nothing..how do I control the av . I'm used to my onkyo where I would select receiver and then controlled it. also not getting sound but I'm thinking that's cause I need to set receiver to amp
post #3239 of 7017
The 2310 must either be in Standby or ON for the remote to work. Also make sure you have the switches at the bottom correctly set. The speakers should work right out of the box, as the HDMI Audio Out defaults to AMP, although if you don't have any speakers yet, you would have to set it to TV in order for HDMI sources to play through your TV speakers.

Hi Mig,

I'm using the Comcast DCX-3400 and the Denon 2310CI via HDMI without any issues. So I for one do not buy the 1.2 vs. 1.3 explanation.
