Click on the 2nd link in my sig to learn about what issues have been resolved with the previous two firmware updates as well as the most recent update. This model will not be upgradeable to HDMI 1.4a as it has been replaced by the HDMI 1.4a 891.

I was playing around with my BR player to get the little blue light to come on (just curious after reading about it on here).

Changed setting from PCM to bit stream, blue light came on, voices and lips were to far out of sync to watch movie.

Changed back to PCM and all is well.

Doesn't really matter since AVR is in a cabinet (can't see blue light anyways), and I've read here that PCM and bit stream play the same way, just curious as to way this happens?

AVR = 2310 BR player = Samsung BP1600

Thanks

Hey Guys;

Since upgrading to the Oppo BDP-80 using my Denon AVR-890, it seems every now and then I get an HDMI handshake issue. What will happen is sometimes everything turns on, but I get no video or audio feed on my tv. If I jiggle the HDMI cable at the player a bit, it all comes on fine. Sometimes when watching a disc the video and audio cut out, jiggle the cable, everything comes on fine.

I have checked all the connections, they are in each piece of equipment nice and tight. Is this the handshake issue that I have heard about with some Denon's that result in the need for a firmware update from Denon?

I did cross post, hoping to find the expert that may know. My searches are pulling up too many results, but not the specific problem I am having.

I had no video when I first connected the LG BD370, so I had to connect it to a different HDMI port, to view the home screen. From there, I went into Setup>Display>HDMI Color Setting and changed it from YCbCr to RGB. Now it works with all the HDMI inputs.

You didn't mention whether or not you tried a different cable, so you might want to give that a shot, if you haven't already.

Click on the 2nd link in my sig to learn how to obtain the current firmware version number in your 2310 and whether it has the "Samsung bitstream" update installed, although generally when the AVR has an issue with the BDP, there is no audio at all. Did you try using the Audio Delay feature?

Based on your own words, this sounds more like a loose HDMI jack on your BDP rather than an HDMI handshake issue.

I will check for the bitstream update. I played a different movie tonight and it was fine with the light on, maybe it was a bad disc or something

Thanks for the reply

I spent all weekend running wires/ cables/ etc for my new gear. I got a new samsung plasma TV with a new samsung 6500 blueray and a denon 2310ci.

Since it is all new and my first foray into HDMI I am struggling to figure it all out. I did have a Denon receier before (2308). My current problem is when I just want to listen to an audio cd I can't seem to get it to play through the speakers unless the TV is on. I currently have it hooked via HDMI to the denon and then the denon hooked to the TV via HDMI.

If I disconnect the HDMI to the TV then it works but with the HDMI connected to the TV it is insisting the TV be on. Is this normal?

you may have to turn off HDMI-CEC (Anynet+) in your Samsung display and/or BDP. HDMI is a little weird in that all devices in the "chain" need to communicate with each other, and HDMI-CEC allows the components to control each other. The Samsung devices may not function without "seeing" each other in the chain when HDMI-CEC is on....

in general though not sure why it should be a "struggle" coming from a 2308... not only are you at least moderately versed in "Denon-ese" from the get-go, that 2308 was also an HDMI receiver, very very similar to your 2310, but the 2310 should be even easier thanks to the improved GUI and menu layout.

Thanks Batpig; I will check it out. I meant to say I was coming from a 2803, not a 2308.

OK, that makes more sense

Question: I have a blu-ray player connected to my 2310. I use it to play movies and to listen to audio CDs. I would like the receiver's audio and surround settings to be different when I'm listening to a CD.

Can it be done?

I also have a samsung 6500 connected to my 2310, but I don't have your problem. But given that both your TV and player are Samsung, I suspect the Anynet+ feature is turned on making them somehow talk to each other. Make sure it's turned off on both systems. Also there is a setting on the Denon that lets you pass through the audio directly to the TV, I'm sorry I forgot what it's called or where in the menus, but that's probably also the problem. Just a hint. Good luck.

This is one of the issues when using the same device for video and music content. Here are two options for "easy" switching between music and movie settings:

OPTION 1 - Use two of the "Quick Selects" to switch between the two modes. The QS buttons memorize volume, surround mode, Audyssey settings, etc. So, for example, you could set up everything for movies and then hold down QS1 to memorize it.... then put on a CD, tweak everything for music, and then memorize that as QS2.

OPTION 2 - Hook up redundant connections between the BDP and the AVR and make them two separate sources. For example, hook up BOTH the HDMI cable and also an optical digital cable. Assign the optical audio cable to the "CD" name, and then switch to that input for music listening and use the other input you currently have set up for video.

Option 2 is how my Blu-ray player is set up -- the HDMI cable is assigned to the "DVD" input and the optical cable is assigned to the "CD" input, so as far as the AVR is concerned they are two separate sources and I have totally different settings.

I use my PS3 for movies and alot of my music and I don't have to change anything with the 2310. I only have Audyssey on and DynEQ though. If it's a stereo input to the receiver it outputs stereo and if it's a surround input it outputs in surround.

Do the Quick Select buttons also memorize the Channel Level adjustments?
They appear to memorize many items as described on page 55 of the owners manual including the Audyssey settings but the channel level adjustments aren't specifically mentioned.
Thanks.

So yesterday I purchase a new 890... Replace my old AVR 3300, verify all connections, read this forum for tips, and within an hour everything basically works. My wife comes home and we watch some television and go to bed.

This morning, breakfast, turn on the 890 and the television and start watching the news...

Then we hear a clicking noise and the television is displaying the Denon name and there is silence. I turn everything off, waith a couple of minutes, turn everything back on and the same thing... Any suggestions please?

Hi tn, welcome. Hmm, more info would be helpful to narrow it down. When this occurs had you just pressed a remote button? What does the FPD show as to input and output and does "Denon" indicate you are in the GUI Denon menu? Have you reverified the power cord and HDMI connections are secure? What are your connections? Have you run autosetup? Is the power indicator flashing red?

No, not on this model, see bp's post here.

What I know (I am a stereo dummy):
No buttons had been pressed, (we were eating breakfast).
Power cords and all connections are secure.
The Denon GUI comes up.
I ran autosetup last night and the Audissy setup with no errors.

Based on your questions I did the following:

Re-ran auto setup.
Re-ran Audissy.

Currently the system works (I do not know why it stopped).

Connections are Comcast STB/DVR "S" video out to Denon CBL "in"
Comcast STB/DVR Digital audio out to Denon Coax2 STB/CBL digital in.
Denon HDMI monitor to 32" Dynex flat panel via HDMI
Denon component video assignable to Toshiba 50" standard def. DLP

I do not know the meaning of "FPD".
Power is stable (nothing was flashing red) and I assume that three APC 750 UPS battery backups are sufficient.

Hopefully this clarifies the setup. I do plan on adding a Wii and a VCR into the matrix for legacy recordings.

The "Dennon" message is simply the name on a black screen like the system is hung at boot (like when a PC boots and the Dell logo comes on but stays stuck at that point).

"Front Panel Display" on the receiver.

So I enjoy listening to music near the pool while tv is being watched inside. I have zone 2 hooked up and working but I cannot change presets to those set. How can I remedy this? I think the presets are changing but they are just going through the a-g folders. I guess I could set presets all the way through, but I'm looking for an alternative if there is one. Thanks!!!

I wish I could tell you that I've mastered that damn user-unfriendly tuner but I haven't wanted to listen to radio over the HT system that bad. Here's a post you may find helpful.

Hi,

I am about to pull the trigger on a 2310 but want to confirm I can connect everything simultaneously.

Currently, I have an HDTV (everyday) and projector (for movies only) as my two video output devices. I have a component video switchbox that enables me to play DVDs and digital satellite on either the TV or the projector without plugging/unplugging cables.

That said, it's a nightmare for anyone to set up.

I want to be able to let the AVR control everything - by the looks of it on the 2310CI, I can plug in my HDTV to the HDMI output and the projector to the component video output. The question is whether I need to connect my DVR and DVD to the AVR using BOTH HDMI and component video/RCA cables for audio? It seems like the HDMI out only feeds from the HDMI inputs. Ideas on the simplest and best sounding setup? TIA...

Ed

Are there are any known issues with 2310 not fixed by the firmware updates to date?

Also, is Denon known to issue firmware updates for "old" models?

your assessment is correct HDMI inputs cannot be "downconverted" so the component output can only feed analog video sources.

sounds like you don't even have a BDP... in that case, you aren't gaining anything by moving over to HDMI so just leave the cable box and DVD player hooked up with component + optical/coax, run a component output to the PJ and HDMI out to the TV and call it a day.

Alternately, depending on your budget, if you want to move to a full HDMI setup you should consider a model with dual HDMI outputs (like the new 3311/991 model).

there are a few minor things but nothing major. most of them have to do with HDMI goofs with cable boxes; the most common one is where you lose the volume/GUI overlay and the video scaler will get shut off when there are specific resolution changes with certain Tivo's and cable boxes... so at worst it will involve a minor workaround. It seems to be very stable and problem-free at this point.
To clarify the issue on my new 890, what it does is change settings by itself...

Yesterday, partway through a DVD, it changed to the CD input by itself.

I put it back to DVD and it continued playing.

This morning while watching television it switched from CBL to HDP Stereo all by itself.

definitely not normal; have you tried the full microprocessor reset yet? given the other issues you have been having, your unit may be defective

Yes, I performed the micro processor reset yesterday and the problem
re-curred this morning. I returned the unit to BB and exchanged it for another new in the box unit and will set that up later tonight. People can say what they want about big box stores, but I have found if I have patience and treat the people working with respect, the convenience of having a brick and mortar outlet can sometimes be worth a few extra dollars.

Thank you for your response.
