I got music without TV working without adding cables (other than my HDMI). I turned the TV off while playing a music CD and the sound stopped as had been happening but right before I turned the TV back on I thought I heard sound. So I tried again turning off the TV but this time I waited a bit longer and suddenly there was music (to my ears) and no TV!!! I guess there is a very slight lag after turning off the TV before the sound somehow reconnects (it is actually only about maybe 20 secs.).

So have been breaking in my new Energy Take Classic speakers with some music and nothing on the TV. This is indeed a new found treasure and these speakers are sweet!!

Thanks for reporting back. Speaking of Energy speakers ... Best Buy/Magnolia is now selling Energy speakers for those looking to demo them.

Currently I have the TV receiving signal via HDMI directly from the cable box and also from the blueray player. Also, if I plug in the HDMI from the 2310 I get audio but no video. Does that sound like just a handshake issue? Now as I'm typing this I recall something about Brighthouse doing some sort of update to our cable boxes last week or maybe it was this week. Maybe it was the night before and for some reason this is just a messed up handshake problem from the cable box? I have the Scientific Atlantic boxes and maybe that just needs to be reset?

Also, I tried different outputs on the back of the 2310 with different HDMI cables with no luck. Anybody know of an authorized repair shop near Orlando? Or do I have to send it directly to Denon?

Thanks,

Rick

If your Blu-Ray doesn't have any issues, then it very well could be a bad update to the cable box. At least reset the cable box to see if that resolves the issue. If not, give your provider a call and see if there have been any complaints. If you do end up sending it in for repair, here is a list of repair centers in Florida (ignore the Self Service centers as those only repair items purchased from that vendor).

Found receiver on this morning, tried remote to turn it off and could not. Turned receiver off manually and then tried remote again and it worked normally. Wife told me she could not turn the receiver off using the remote last night so just left it on. What would cause this to occur?

Weak battery perhaps?

That was my thought, so I inserted new batteries but remote still did not respond. But,
since it worked fine after I switched the receiver off and then on manually I will not worry about it too much. Just thought there was something in the manual covering this that I missed. Up to now the 2310ci has worked flawlessly...

Was remote accidentally set to control TV or DVD player?

Question to owners of 2310: does it process PAL signal? I mean upscaling and deinterlacing from Composite -> HDMI (1080p) and HDMI->HDMI. Just don't want to buy it to see half of my movies collection is unplayable. Anybody ?
jdsmoothie,

I sent you a PM with my e-mail. Could you send me the firmware for 2310ci (2nd version, I think)?

I would appreciate your help.

Thanks.

I forwarded the update to you on Sunday when you requested it. As you used a work email address, your work email server likely trashed the email as it's got a .exe file attached. Please see my PM for details.

The manual (p. 10) indicates that PAL is supported re: video conversion, but AFAIK nothing really on the upscaling/deinterlacing. When logged in to AVS forum, a "Search This Thread" button shows up in the upper right corner, just beneath the list of pages. Press the button and enter the key word "PAL" and you'll be able to read the posts in this thread that relate to PAL. Having read a few of them myself, it would seem that PAL (576i) can indeed be upscaled to 1080p, however, your best bet is to call Denon CS to confirm.

I have just received the firmware.

Thank you very much for your help.

Denon Technical Support : "The unit will be able to up-convert a PAL signal from component to HDMI". They're cool I got reply next morning!

Keep in mind that reply simply mimics what the Owner's manual indicates regarding conversion (unless you stripped some of the reply). The question you posted asked about upscaling/deinterlacing which is different from conversion.

I am not getting any video output from the 2310 at all. It doesn't matter if it was the Blu-Ray or Cable box. Looks like I need to take it in for service somewhere. Bummer! And of course the service center right down the street is a Self Service Center so that won't work.

Hi Guys,

I am having a bit of trouble trying to set up upconversion settings.

I am only connecting 3 devices, I locked all sources except the 3 below:
DVD - DVD Player
SAT/CBL - Cable Box
HDP - PS3

In Video Conversion Settings:

I dont have the option to adjust upconverting for each source, the only source I have is Sat/Cbl.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

That was another thing I checked but the settings on the remote were not changed...I think somehow the receiver was not on "standby" as usual...anyway, its Thursday 7-29 and the problem has not re-occurred so no worries...

Please be more specific about "upconverting". Are you referring to the Video Convert setting (cable conversion) or the i/p Scaler setting (signal upscaling)? Also, what does ".. only source I have is Sat/Cbl" mean?

Hey everyone!

I just joined the 2310ci Club by purchasing said receiver yesterday. It will be replacing my 4 year old Denon AVR-1707 which has performed very well over the years. I haven't set up the new one yet as I need to sort out a few issues first. One issue I have involves the satellite radio. The 1707 supported XM and the 2310 uses Sirius. In Canada the two sat co.'s are still separate entities. The XM receiver/antenna I am using on the 1707 will not work with the Sirius connection on the back of the 2310. I would gladly cancel the over-priced sat subscription but my wife does not want to part with certain channels. Eventually I am going to bring a Sonos system into the mix (I also use the receiver for a 4 zone audio system) and introduce her to internet radio but in the interim I see these as my options:

1. Cancel XM and try to buy a Sirius home connect kit (most local stores seem not to carry these nowadays).
2. Find an XM to Sirius plugin adapter. Denon antenna is an Audiovox CNP-1000.
3. Buy an iPod Touch to stream XM Online via app.

I'm currently looking around the www for an adapter but I'm not sure if it will work with the built-in Sirius-ready feature of the amp? I plan to phone XM as well to discuss options. I'm thinking they'll suggest a separate XM receiver plugged into the aux jacks of the 2310ci which I'm not a fan of, having got rid of my Skyfi home dock previously in favour of the XM-ready Home Connect feature of the 1707. Less cables and AC power plugs the better, imo.

Any ideas?

Thanks for reading!

Btw, this AVS thread has been very instumental in my decision on buying the 2310ci. Thanks!

Hello all,

Just picked up an AVR-890 on clearance from Best Buy yesterday. I've been reading much of this thread and it appears that there are/were some early issues with the 890/2310 and certain BD players regarding HD audio. I've also read that there were some fw updates to correct them. There are a couple of things I'm not clear on, so I would appreciate some feedback.

My unit's serial number starts with 905, indicating a build date of May '09 and when I checked the current fw, it was pretty old. One of my BD players is the LG BD390, which I understand was one of the players having the audio issue. So far, I have tested a few BDs with the LG 390 bitstreaming Dolby TrueHD or DTS-MA and I am getting audio. The 890's display is showing TrueHD or DTS-MA, the blue HD light is coming on and it sounds damn good!

So, my questions are:

1. Is this issue sporadic, or do you just not hear any audio at all?

2. And if you do hear audio, am I actually getting DTS-MA or the core DTS 5.1?

I think this is a really nice unit and I'd hate to have to send it away when I just got it. I know I could have the BD player decode but I like seeing the display say DTS-Master and that cool blue light. Thanks in advance,

Mike T

Based on your post, it would seem your 890 is indeed decoding the HD audio it's receiving so there's no reason to send it in for that particular issue. It's possible that there was a update for the LG-BD390 that solved the problem as the 890 does not have the 1st firmware update that solved the issue.

I am referring to Video Convert and Scaler Settings, P38 in the manual.

In the manual it says that I should be able to select setting for each of my sources but when I am trying to change the settings only "Sat/Cbl" is available under source.

Perhaps you are confusing the Video Select setting which is what you would select if you wanted to watch a different analog video source while listening to the current audio source selected? Normally the Video Select setting should be left as SOURCE. To change the Video Convert and i/p Scaler settings for a particular source .. you need to go to that source either pressing the corresponding button on the remote or the Source select knob on the front panel.

So basically if I want to upscale it has to be done for each source while watching that source?

Yes, those settings are stored for each input source.

Thanks for the rapid response, jd. That same thought crossed my mind that a fw update for the 390 may have fixed the issue. In addition, the GUI is overlaying properly with my LG 390, as opposed to a black menu.

One bit of oddity that I've seen is when using mute. If I hit vol up/down, mute does go away but it leaves a small, broken graphic overlay of the Denon logo. It looks something like this "den", with most of the "d" cut off. If I hit the vol button again, it goes away. Really not a problem for me as it's so minor and I generally just toggle mute on/off, without going to the volume button.

I've been exploring the features etc. of this unit and I'm liking it more and more. The surround experience is outstanding and I really like the capabilities of Audyssey. Thanks again.

I just purchased a refurbished Denon 1910 from Vanns, serial number: 0013347089, Main ver: .89 and sub ver: .24.
I just read the post about he firmware updates, and fro my understanding gathered that if it had a serial number beginning with 001 it should have the .27 firmware update on it.
Does anyone know why it would have such an early version on it?
and to clarify in order for it to be updated it has to be sent into denon?

Many Thanks
