I am completely stumped. I have a 2310CI and I have replaced my older Apple TV with the newest one. I had 5:1 surround with the old ATV, but the new one does not pass surround to the receiver. I get only stereo sound from only the rear speakers. ( I have a 5:1 set up in my living room )
Has anybody else gotten this problem. I have called Apple Support and I have an appointment Sunday to have them look the new ATV over. I have already did a complete firmware restore and that does not help
.
I have another question. I have all of my HDMI components going to my new Sharp LCD TV with 4 HDMI ports and I dont have any available ports left. I don't know how to get the GUI from the Denon onto the TV with all the HDMI ports in use. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I may have to do some reassignment of audio to get the ATV to work.

Thank you for all of the help.
Lyle

The ATV3 has both an HDMI and optical output, either of which is capable of passing 5.1 audio to the AVR if setup correctly so the ATV may indeed be defective if audio is only being heard from the side surround speakers. If you're not having problems with any other DD/DTS 5.1 sources (eg. DVD, BDP, cable/sat box), then more than likely it's a problem with the ATV3. If you have no other devices to test with, you may also want to consider doing a microprocessor reset on the 2310CI (p. 70), although this will reset your settings (including Audyssey) to their original mfr defaults.

Lyle - your receiver is an HDMI switcher. Why do you have all your HDMI components connected to your TV? The easiest solution is to use the switching and overlay capability of your receiver.

I did put the old ATV in place of the new one, with all connections in place and got 5:1 surround signal to the 2310 from the opening segment, so the 2310 is receiving the 5:1 content from the same exact hookup configuration with all the speakers responding. I hope that the "Genius Bar" can shed some light on the problem tomorrow. All my other components are doing fine with correct output of surround sound when connected to the 2310.
Thanks for the response. You are always so helpful, it is a pleasure to be a part of this forum.

I realize the question, but I did have BB Geeks set up my TV and they suggested that I use the TV ports for video and the 2310 for audio. I am thinking along your thoughts and maybe will come to that solution. I will lay out my components when I have more time and maybe I can get some pointers as to setting it up.
I do have to thank you also for all you do on this forum. Its a pleasure to come here with any questions and get intelligent answers to all of them.

If you're using a Harmony remote and don't mind the extra cabling, no reason to change other than when adding more HDMI devices. Note though you may want to keep the cable/sat box as is as they often cause HDMI handshake issues when the HDMI is connected directly to the AVR.

Hey guys, i have a one doubt, my firmware version on my 2310 is main 00.69 and sub 30. Exists another version, more recent?
I only see difference in the sub version, the new is a 33, should I update?

Review post #2013 in this thread to see if you need any of the fixes provided by the newer firmware. If not, the don't worry about it. smile.gif

I went to the Genius Bar and got another ATV. Brought it home and was again disappointed to see no Surround sound on the 2310. I then put the Blue ray disks into my Panasonic BD player and noticed that at the beginning of the disks there was the choice of stereo or surround audio. I chose the surround and there was the surround that I wanted on the ripped copies. When I ripped the disks into iTunes with iSkysoft DVD ripper, i had not gotten the surround audio track, or I wasn't able to choose that track I wanted with the ATV. I did play the rips in iTunes on my computer and there is multi audio tracks on the copies, so iSkysoft did it's job and recorded the multi tracks.
I trust that I am not the only one that had this problem. I read that there was a way to pick between the stereo and surround tracks on the ATV, by pressing "Select" and when the choice of sound tracks comes up on the screen, you choose "Surround", but I tried this and all I get is the Chapter choices, not the audio track choices This has been a really frustrating ride, but as usual, I will somehow figure it out with time and your great help.
As before, any responses will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

I need help. I have converted a DVD with Pavtube Blue-Ray Ripper and imported it to iTunes. I want to play it with the new Apple TV3. All I get is stereo sound. The DVD was ripped with 5:1 sound and there are the indications on The 2310 that all speakers are being recognized, but all I get is the 2 back speakers with sound. I had a suggestion that I should choose "Direct" from the ATV3 to the receiver. How again do I do that?
Any responses will be greatly appreciated;
Thanks:

Lyle

From my last post, I changed my app to Pavtube Blue Ray Ripper. it's a better program.

Hi,

I was curious, my 890 is now being used just for audio, airplay specifically. I moved and am in the process of setting this up. I have the AVR 890, the airport express, and 5 rooms with 2 speakers each to hook up.

Can I just plug the speakers into the surround inputs and play the music that way? Is there a way to force full sound (not surround type) through the surround inputs?

Thanks,
Rich

Basically you would have to set the receiver to "MultiCh Stereo" mode, which will broadcast the same stereo signal to all the pairs of speakers in the system. This will give you three pairs of stereo output (L/R, SL/SR, and SBL/SBR). But you won't really have a way to turn individual pairs on/off -- does your whole house setup have in-line volume control in each room that you could use to attenuate the output?

It may be worth your while to sell the 890 and get a dedicated multich zone amp to power the system, as it could be better suited for the job of simple stereo audio distribution.

Hi,

I currently have no volume controls at all. I like the idea of putting zone 2 as the outside speakers (which was my previous setup). I am trying to get the speakers working on the last two inputs: Surround Back / Amp Assign left & right. For some reason when using the multi zone stereo I cant get it to play from those two speaker plugs.

In terms of volume controls would a newer denon be able to take advantage of turning certain speakers on & off from their airplay app?

For example we had people over last night & before they came we had the music on, but it was also on in the kids playroom. They complained but as parents we won that argument. While I could put the kids playroom on zone 2, if my longer term goal is to have the outside speakers as a zone 2, what could I do?

If I go for an amp, that also brings up the question of volume controls. Do you have any suggestions.

Thanks,
Rich

Yes, a networking model would allow you to use a smart phone to make configuration changes (eg. turning Zone 2 ON/OFF).
Wouldn't the remote turn it ON/OFF also tho?
I am still on the fence on what to do. I have the receiver & cabling in the basement right next to the router, so having it on the network is appealing but I will have a longer term issue of having (at some point) 5 inside rooms wired with speakers, and 1 outside (what i would think of as zone 2).

I was reading on batpig's site that some have a third zone which might be interesting as well.

We dont really listen to music that often but it would be nice to have the main house as zone 1, the kids playroom as zone 2, & the outside speakers as a zone 3.

I read that the denon app is for xx13 models only. I just dont know if I am better off with just an amp or what. I have no plans for any video through a receiver for the near future. The TV speakers are fine for my needs (and seem to be plenty loud).

In the meantime, does anyone know how I could use the multistereo mode & have Surround Back / Amp Assign left & right also getting a signal?
I don't think the 2310 has 3 zones so you are limited to 2. If you want speakers in every room you will need a separate control (volume or on/off) to those speakers because the 2310 isn't capable of such flexibility.

Hi RichTJ99, maybe a 6 channel speaker selector and volume control (rotary or slider type) in each room.

So I already put banana clips on the wires - I am using 16 gauge wire for the speakers. Is there some type of block I can plug it into when using the 6 speaker selector? So I dont need to throw away the banana clips?

Looks like a nice cheap solution vs buying a new receiver strictly for music.
I don't understand the question...Do you mean bananna plugs? And where are these plugs? You still want to use them to connect the 2310 to your speakers. What sort of "block" do you mean? Just cut the plugs off if you need to. Crap happens man, not a seriously big loss and still cheaper than a dedicated amp.
You are right. I get cheap with wierd things. So I plug all my speakers into the monoprice thing, then how do I get this connected to the AVR890? Just plug two RCA's to one of the inputs on the denon?
Would help if we knew what switcher you are buying/bought...wink.gif
post #6986 of 7011
Sorry the one Jchin mentioned from monoprice. I did order it so, hopefully I can get that working properly.
The only thing his links do is go to the main page for me. Have no clue what he suggested.confused.gif
post #6988 of 7011
Check out PID 8230 on monoprice. I hope it will work since I already ordered it.
Personally I would connect it to the L/R assignable amp (Zone 2) terminal of the 2310. Banana on the 2310, bare wire for everything else (out from 8230 to speakers) and leave the 5.0 (Zone 1) banana out to speakers.

I recently purchased and set up my AVR-890 and I'm having trouble doing something that I would assume to be very simple: I want to watch a game (via my cable box-HDMI) and listen to something through an analog input at the same time. Can I set this thing up to play video from HDMI and audio from, say Phono, for example, without utilizing multizone capabilities? I've got it set up as 5.1 and I don't have room to set up an extra set of speakers. Is this even possible?

Thanks so much for the help guys.
