How do you have time to comment on all of these AVS threads? It seems like you are on all of the Denon threads!
I am part of the modern cubicle workforce..... addicted to the internet and stuck at a desk in front of a computer 40 hours a week. Posting on AVS makes for a nice distraction during the day when I don't feel like working....

Notice how much less frequently I post on weekends

Last year I bought a Denon AVR-4810CI in US and brought it home (Brazil).
Unfortunately after just a couple of weeks it failed and got into PROTECTION MODE. I tried to reset it with no avail.

It is not worth to take it back to the US to fix and I found someone who can help me as he has been working with Denon receivers and DJ equipment for 15+ years, but we need the SERVICE MANUAL and I cannot find it anywhere (neither free nor for sale).

I tried several manual selling websites but did not find this specific manual in any of them. I really do not want to throw away such a nice piece of equipment especially because I believe the issue is not that serious and could be easily solved.

Any help is very welcome.
Thank you

(I had a separate thread for this topic, but got suggestions to post it here as well)

Although I cannot help you with the service manual, there are several reasons that the unit would shut down in protection mode, identified by the frequency of the flashing red power ring ...

Every 1/2 sec - speaker wire from one post touching another post; running 4 ohm speakers to loud; or amp failure

Every 2 sec - ventilation issue

Dont throw it. Put it in a box, with my name on it, and mail it to me! I would of course put a small appreciation fee in the mail to you as well!

I second that you check you speaker wires (especially at the speakers) to see if they might be touching.
Probably it went into protection mode due to a speaker failure (when using the zone b speakers)... it is the 1/2 sec flashing mode!

The problem is it does not "leave" protection mode even when there is no speaker (or actually nothing at all) connected to the receiver. I already tried to reset the microprocessor as instructed in the manual and by Denon customer service.

I actually bought 2 denon receivers (one 4310 and one 4810) and both failed (different reasons) within couple of weeks. So disappointed.

^^
Try unplugging the unit for about 10 minutes and then do the reset procedure after plugging back in. Also, pop the top and see if there are any noticeable fuses that have blown that can be easily replaced.
Already tried all this. Kept the unit unplugged for days, the fuses that we can see are all OK ;(

I hope I can get the manual to get it serviced.
I just spoke with a rep at one of Denon's authorized parts distributors (Herman Electronics) and she said they can special order the service manual for $22, but to ship it to Brasil would cost considerably more as they use UPS.
That is fantastic!!! Thanks for that. I do have a mail address in the US. Can I contact them directly?
Sure, that's why I gave the link. You don't have to be a distributor to order from them as some folks have used them to order the defective network card rather than sending it in for repair.

I need to put an external antenna on my Denon AVP-A1HDCI.

I see you note that it uses a RP SMA connector. Is it female or male?

Thanks

RP SMA Male or Female for Denon?

Wrong thread perhaps?

Is there a way to get 7.1 sound from 5.1 HD source by simulating side surround channels into rear surrounds using the 4810? If so, what are the settings/selections?
Using the STANDARD (STD) mode of DD PLIIx takes a DD/DTS 5.1 signal and simulates 7.1 surround when speakers are connected to the Surr Back speaker posts.
I should have asked if I could get 7.1 HD from 5.1HD. I knew that could be done with regular DTS5.1 but does it also keep the high bitate of DTSHD-MA and True HD or does it just pull out the basic DTS low bit rate signal and sim to the back channels?
No it works fine on lossless audio. PLIIx only touches two channels (2 surrounds >>>> 4 surrounds) and the front 3.1 channels are 100% untouched.
Super, thank you. As soon as I get my 4810 back from repair (dang defective network card!), I'll try it out. For now, I've gone back to using my AVR_5800; a much higher quality unit but no lossless audio.

Thanks again,

Dan

Dear readers, be patient with me, this is my first post. I just purchased the Denon 4810CI and am five days into configuration.
I will be posting several questions over the next week as I have not found tech support that helpful yet.

First, batpig, I have downloaded your lengthy document on denon verbiage and will be reviewing to see if any of my questions are answered with common english translation. Quick glance through so far; nice job, thanks for posting that.

First off, just to confirm some of the previous posts I've scanned on this site covering this device, once I got the device setup Thursday night and connected to my wireless network, it automatically checked the Denon site for a firmware upgrade. It auto downloaded and installed successfully. However, now the wireless will not work with any security protocol in place! Bummer. Tech support of course had nothing to say except up/down reset; which of course did nothing to fix the issue.

I find the main remote very tricky to use thus far.

Key question I'll leave for now: Is there a way to connect up two sets of front speakers?
More later,
In advance, thanks for the feedback.

^Hi, welcome. Can you expound on why you want to run 2 sets of front speakers?
Thanks for the reply; albeit with a question.

My reasoning is that my main speakers are a pair of older Klipsch KG 4.2's and to fill in what they seemed to be missing, I bought a pair of Klipsch Ref IV RB51's last year. With my old Sony 5200ES AVR, I was able to run them in A/B mode and get the nice high's from the smaller RB51's.

With the new Denon, the power is better and Audessy see's them as a "large, full spectrum" speaker but I still like getting the sound from both sets. If I could afford the ML SummitX's I want to match my new sub, I would but alas, it is what it is.

I've tested Audessy config with both speakers separately and strangely I still like the smaller ones better but admit the sound is a tad fuller from the KG 4.2's. I would really like to run both pair.
Can I not hook them up as if I'm bi-amping one pair?
Thanks
Dman
The reason I asked was to clarify if you wanted to run them as A OR B which you can't do AFAIK, as there is no Front A/B speakers option. For A AND B there is the biamp hack option. However that will not likely yield the nice SQ benefit you hear now from Audyssey on either pair separately, as it will try to calibrate 2 different speakers in 2 different locations simultaneously. Instead I encourage you to assign 1 pair as DSX wides and see how you like it.

I 'ASIGNED' three speakers for my center channel. I don`t see why you could`nt 'ASIGN' two pairs for the front channel.
Dman -- you should run the "lesser" pair of speakers as DSX wides.
I'm gonna give that a shot this w/e. Thanks for the idea.

I worked out an issue on the wireless networking.

1. I reset the microprocessor since I was experiencing video problems last night too.

2. Immediately went into the wireless config after making some changes on my router; and setup WEP128 on the guest network. Implemented the ACL to the MAC and I'm good to go. Was able to catch a portion of my first listen to George Norry Coast to Coast AM through the Internet channel. *snicker*, no alien talk tonight though. My AM reception where i'm at is horrendis so If i listen to anything AM it will be via the web.

3. So, next up tonight; when it gets quiet, is to re-run Audessy with the Rev IV RB-51s as primaries again to try and refine what i want to do between the KG 4.2's and these. I need to work on a few updated connections this weekend and maybe start programming the remote a bit. I'm getting better navigating the GUI. It definately takes some getting used to.

*Side note*
Received by 5th grade today from my MBA course, earned an A-. I'm happy. Tonight is my night off from studying then gotta get back to the next class week one work tomorrow night.**

Thanks for feedback fellas.

Since a few days I am using a Set Top box from Cisco, model 8485DVB to receive HD Television through a dutch provider (Ziggo). The unit is connected on HDMI3 (SAT/CBL).

The problem I run into is following. While going through the different channels such as MTV or Discovery it can happen that there is suddenly no audio anymore. The other thing I noticed is that the audio volume of the HD Channels is much lower than the non-HD channels. This did not happen with the previous model of Cisco I have been using (model Cisco 8455DVB).

No idea why this happens but perhaps an option is to use the optical out from the Cisco for audio instead of the audio over HDMI. Unfortunately, I do not know if this is possible or how to make this connection.
The manual states that there is an OPT1, OPT2 and OPT3. However, the manual does not say which connector is OPT1, 2 or 3. At the backside of the 4810 there are only two Optical-In namely 1(TV) and 2(DVR). There is no OPT3.

My questions are following:
- Any idea why audio is gone while going through the different channels?
- Why is there a difference in audio volume between HD and non-HD?
- Can I combine HDMI3 for the video signal and Optical for audio?
- If so, how do I setup the 4810?
- Which optical connector to use?

Any advice is very welcome!

Maybe it is on the front panel?

No, but if it is HDMI unhappiness, maybe the Optical alternative will serve as a workaround.

Not sure. Here the SD channels are stereo and the HD are 5.1. If you have the STB set to output stereo all the time, the downmixing might reduce the gain. Are you getting 5.1 as a bitstream from the HD channels?

Most AVRs allow this.

Should be able to marry any Optical input with any HDMI video. Can you find the audio/video connections setup menu?

It's likely an HDMI handshake issue with the CISCO box. Connect the HDMI from the CISCO directy to the TV with optical from the CISCO to either OPT1 or OPT2 on the 4810. OPT3 is under the front panel flap. Under the INPUT ASSIGN menu for the input you're using for the CISCO box (eg. SAT?CBL, change HDMI to "NONE" and DIGITAL to either OPT1 or OPT2, whichever you decide to use.
Thanks for the input, this is why I love this forum I scanned the whole manual on OPT3 but couldn't find it, never thought it would be under the front flap.....

This weekend I will do some testing with the suggestions made!

Unfortunately, I have not been able to use the HDMI for Video and the Optical input for Audio. It looks that HDMI audio is prioritized above Optical Audio input... Is this correct?

Connecting the HDMI from the CISCO directy to the TV with optical from the CISCO to OPT1 has the disadvantage that If you change the volume level, the volume bar of the Denon is not shown anymore on the screen.

Anyone any other suggestions?
