SXRD OB Replacement Failures Or Not...

As suggested by Mr. Wally, I have started a new poll to see how long after your OB replacement did it fail...or not, if that is the case. Please include model number, original purchase date, the date(s) of your OB replacement and how long after the replacement it failed.

Original tv (KDS-R60XBR1) purchased in fall '05. OB failed in late '08. Got a refurbished TV (no one was available to replace the OB where I live--Juneau, AK--so they gave me a refurbished tv) around early January 09, and it still looks great.

I'd rather have this tv than anything else currently available--at least when it's working properly. Hopefully it will keep on working properly for a while longer.

KDS-R70XBR2 build date 4/07, purchase date (new in box) 12/07. The optical block began failing ~May '08 and was replaced for the yellow stain in early August '08. The replacement OB was initially fine, but the stain began to come back after ~2-3 months. The stain isn't quite as bad as before and it has been more-or-less stable for the last 6 months so I have not asked for a second optical block replacement yet.

For details of my first OB replacement see http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...php?p=14422469

Sony 50XBR1-purchase Jul05-failed Jul06-colors started distorting again Jul07 (out of warranty)...I'm just living with it until the LCDs get Kuro black and bigger.

KDS-50A2000 purchased in September of 2006. Had the OB replaced in July of 2008, which was defective; green and red tint all over. Had THAT OB replaced a couple weeks later and it has been fine since then.

thanks audio for setting this up.

now maybe we can accurately track the failure rate of replacement obs.

mine is still looking very good since my march '09 replacement.

sometimes i think i see a little yellowish discoloration in the lower
right corner of the display, but it doesn't appear to be there
consistently and when i see it it is quite faint. i'm the only family
member who has noticed this as my 2 boys and wife haven't seen it.

of course, they didn't notice the greenish/ yellowish tint that covered
the whole display when my ob was failing until i pointed it out to them

KDS-R60XBR2 was new about 2years ago when Sony replaced my original 50" XBR1 with this model because of the OB problems. Now OB is going out on my 60". Technician will have to diagnose the problem and talk to Sony to decide to fix it or change it out again. Anyone have a second change out? If, so what model?

60"XBR2 here. Build date 12-06 purchased 03-07. Still on original OB. Beginning to see slight yellow staining in all white backgrounds, not enough bother yet to replace.

My advice...replace it.

Was that yellow discoloration there from the beginning of it being replaced?

60" XBR2. Build date - December 2006. Purchased April 2007. I have had four OB replacements. The first one occurred in, I believe, June, 2008. OB number 2 and 3 lasted less than six months. I apologize that I do not have the dates of the OB replacements. I'm pretty sure number two happened in December of 2008. After the fourth replacement, Sony was adamant about replacing the television...Will

60XBR2 build date Nov.'06 bought Nov. 25 '06
IIRC original OB replaced in Aug. of '08. but it should have been replaced sooner as the screen was completely green by the time i called for service.
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...0#post14683370

replacement OB began showing a yellow circle about the size of a fist in the middle of the screen only visible during warm up about a month later in Sept. '08. it is now visible as a light green on B&W material, is a lot larger and also includes a halo around it produced by a circle of no stain surrounded by a circle of stain. sort of like a target.

the poll is reflecting 4 replacement OB failured within 6 months. i count 7 in the posts.

if the intentions of this poll is to get an idea of how many replacement OB's went bad and how long they lasted. in order for the poll to be acurate, those with problems should be allowed to vote more than once. either that or maybe add a spot to vote on how many replacements they have had.
Right now I'd vote that mine hasn't failed yet (although it is looking a little soft), but what happens if it starts to have problems a week from now or a month from now? Will I be able to change my vote?

i did not notice the spot until about 2 months after replacement. it is very faint and not really noticeable. i wonder if it's my mind playing tricks on me

maybe we should add a selection for owners having more than one ob replacement in the poll.

I am not sure that a pool can be modified after it has been posted. If someone knows how to do it, just let me know.

The has not failed yet category also needs a month since replacement or something like that. All those no failures might only be 2 weeks old, no way to tell

I have replaced several SXRD OBs over the last couple of years and none have had any problems, yet.

Just out of curiosity, have you personally followed-up with the owners of each of those optical blocks recently? I ask because the tech that replaced my OB last August would say the same thing, since I haven't reported the failure of my replacement OB to anyone (other than here) yet.

Definitely an issue. I had one fail in less than six months, one fail at around a year, and one that's still good after around 1.5 years.

There is good reason sony does not produce these kinds of displays any longer. After 3 OB replacements I am exchanging mine out with a samsung. Really is a matter of time for them to fail over and over again. Get out now while you still can!! lol. just my .02

KDS-R60XBR2

Purchased 11/06

I NOTICED that the OB started showing green hughes and purple on grey test patter around 2 years.

OB has been replaced once just a few weeks ago.

after my ob failed, and after i heard pio was going out of the display biz,
took me a while, but i found a great deal on a 5020. it's a great set but only
50". it clearly has better processing then the xbr2 as it doesn't do any
3:2 pulldowns so the image is sharper.

i knew my xbr2 was going to have continued problems and i must have at least one outstanding hd display properly operating in my home or i'm subject to
severe withdrawls.

pulled up a gray screen yesterday and a white screen and, unfortunately, i do believe there is some discoloration starting up in the lower right corner. kind of magenta in color. very faint and hard to see, but my guess is this ob will fail as well. not noticeable currently but we all know what the pattern is on these things.

fortunately i have the sony 5 yr extended warranty which runs through 11/11 so they're on the hook for replacement obs for more than 2 years. maybe by then they'll have an 60" lcd that can put out a picture that rivals an sxrd so i can swap it out.
I had my 2000 OB replaced about 3 months ago. I always had some coloration in areas but at the end I had lost contrast, including the ability to produce black. The new OB gave me the best blacks I have ever seen and a truly good picture, but right from the start I saw some green in the upper left and lower right of a gray to white display. I have a Sony extended warranty and will be sure to have this OB swapped out before the 4 year warranty expires. By the way, the original bulb is still going strong.
I just had mine replaced Thursday after waiting two weeks for the new OB to come in. If it fails, am I SOL since the class action lawsuit time has passed?

Oops. I voted but shouldn't have because my OB has never been replaced. I voted "hasn't failed yet" and then read the question. Sorry all.
