Daytime projection?

Hi all, I'm planning on getting my first projector. Due to budget, it'll likely just be 720p and either dlp or lcd. My top two prospects right now are the sanyo plv-z60 (~$800) and panasonic ax200u (~$1k). I plan to do indoor and outdoor viewing and was wondering if any of you have used either projector outdoors during the day? Like to watch a sports game. I know it won't be as good as nighttime, but do you have a recommendation on a good projector for the occasional daytime viewing outdoors?

No projector can compete against the sun, even afternoon sun.
You're better off mounting a tv inside a covered enclosure or awning for anything that approaches viewable

well that stinks! what if i were to set it up in a shady area under trees? still no go?

Projection images are significantly affected indoors with just the lights on and outdoor sunlight will totally wash out a projected image - this is why drive in movies weren't open even on cloudy days and they always waited until after sundown to crank up the projector and why commercial theaters show the movies in the dark.

Have you tried to lug a tv outside to watch or your laptop monitor in bright sunlight? If not, take my word - they don't work much in the sun either.

As posted - put a tv in an enclosure that will put the tv screen in at least partial shade.

cool, thanks for the suggestions guys. looks like it'll be a 19" wal-mart special CRT during the day and will bring out the projector at night. Think i'm gonna get the sanyo PLV-z60! Will let you know in a few weeks how it looks outside!

How did your outdoor experiment turn out? Did you try a tv or projector outside?
