Do I need to set this up as two separate 'devices' with HDMI assigned to one device and Component/Toslink assigned to the other device?

correct, this is the best way to do it. If you assign them to the same "name" then the HDMI will always take priority.

It's helpful to not think of input names as being rigidly stuck to one device. For example, I use my Blu-ray player to play CD's, but my settings for music are not the same as for movies (plus it's a pain when you use CD audio over HDMI because turning the display on/off cuts the audio). So I hook up the BDP with HDMI (for movies) and optical (for CD's) and assign them to different names, one is called "BLU-RAY" and the other is called "CD" and I have different tweaks (e.g. Dynamic EQ offset) for each one.

Strange Issue.

At random moments the 3310 will change to a different input with no prompting from me. I could be watching TV, a DVD, Xbox 360, etc. Doesn't matter. All of the sudden it will change and I don't know why. We only have the one Denon product and I'm using the enclosed remote. It only started recently after the latest firmware update.

Anyone having this issue?

Thanks

Just wonder, what is the volume level you guys are watching your movies, I'm at about -8db to -5db, I hope I have some headroom before clipping?

Thanks

The output level is going to vary widely with each set of speakers. When watching TV, our normal volume level is in the -30db to -23db range. For movies I would say the range is -18db to -12db...

About a month ago I ask this forum to clarity the use of the Web Control Function for the AVR-3310CI. Besides being dog slow, one can neither read the existing pre-sets nor navigate well.

Also, what's the role of the presets versus Memory? No combination seems to work for me.

While on this issue, what the heck does Character Search do (besides, as the abysmal docs say, search for acronyms)? It's not once found any trial phrase.

Last, I'd like to use the second remote to control zone 3 and play a playlist, or internet music. Can the above be used, or is Quick Select used. How does one set up QUick select for zone 3 when one can't see to navigate?

Can anybody help this time? Batpig?

Thanks in advance.

I have a strange issue with my Pany DMP-BD60 bluray and 3310. When using HDMI input with BD60, I get sound but picture is not there, brief flashes of video only. My Sony bluray works fine. Got another BD60 thinking the one I just received was bad but the second one works exactly the same. Any ideas as to a setting I may need to change? Just got the 3310 so I am still gropping through the manual but can't find anything that may cause this.
Thanks.

[quote=RockL;18082991]It's apparently a widespread product defect on the xx10ci models.

another example of the networking problem here

I had the system working including networking and then began to have problems with the menu not appearing on screen but only on the unit. I had to reset the processor and redo the speakers.

But then then the networking would not complete connecting ... I tried the "processor reset" again as well as the "holding the up and down buttons on the front-panel navigation circle while powering the unit on"

I ordered the unit on line ... to return it for service I will not have audio and video for an extended time ...

I have not yet called anyone at Denon ... what is the number or email to call?

What do we think will be the ultimate resolution?

Thanks for the offer to help. Sent you a PM. I do not know the firmware version on the DB60, mine is not networked yet and can't tell from the menu.
The BD60 works great on my AVR2807 but nothing on the 3310.

I am setting up a new 3310, i have an emotiva upa 7 to power my seven channel HT and want to use the 3310 to power a play room and a gym. Is this possible? I seem to be getting only 5 channels in the HT??
I've done lots of research and have narrowed my AVR choices down to Denon's 3310 and Onkyo's 807. I just wanted to get some peoples' take on the significance of these given issues:

For my purposes, I see a few things in the 3310's favor: multi-channel input, better video processing, and less heat than the 807 (meaning longer life?).

In the 807's favor: 2 sub outs, more power and weight, DSX included, and fewer internet issues than the 3310.

Easier set-up would also be a plus, but from what I've read, it's hard to tell if one is any easier than the other.

BTW, I'm posting this in the Denon thread and not the Onkyo one because I'm leaning toward the 3310, and I guess I'm looking for that little added extra push to get me to finally commit.

You would have to connect another amp to each of the Zone 2 and Zone 3 pre-outs to do what you want.

(a) A $2 "Y" RCA cable creates 2 sub outs if you've got 2 subs
(b) The 15 additional W of power is moot as an AVR uses less then 10W/CH at average volume
(c) As of Feb 1, a downloadable DSX firmware upgrade package is available for the 3310 for $100

I've found this forum very useful. Thought I would give something back by sharing my adventures using the Media Server functions on the Denon 3310ci. I have a computer running Windows XP with a wireless connection to my home network. The Denon is connected directly to the internet and to a Samsung tv via a HDMI cable.

So first off I saw the computer listed on the Media Server menu and could navigate to folders and see pictures (jpegs) but no mp3 music files. I finally found on pg 59 of the manual that it says you need a media server for these files (eg Windows Media Player).

What was confusing is that you do not need this to see and play files on a USB stick inserted directly into the Denon.

So I fired up Windows Media Player and after working with it, I could see all my mp3 files, but no m4a files created with iTunes. After spending a lot of time on the internet, I found that you need additional software for these files to show up in Media Player. Did all that and then could see the files on the Denon Media Server menus, but still could not play these files. They don't have the music icon that the mp3 files have - either no icon or a picture icon for files that have album art (which will show up on the tv - but no music).

So the bottom line is that Windows Media Player may not be very useful if you have m4a music files.

Not wanting to convert all my files, I looked around for a more functional server. Tversity is free and looked good so I installed it. It worked great for the m4a files, but the Tversity server did not always appear in the Media Server menu on the Denon. It would even disappear while being used to play a file on my computer. After being frustrated for days trying to figure out the problem, I decide to directly connect the computer to the network - bingo - Tversity appears on top of the menu and stays there. Then I started looking for Tversity forums and found one with this:

"If the computer running the media server has more than one network interface, you need to make sure that the TCP binding order on your machine is such that the network interface on which it is supposed to communicate with the media player appears first. Here is how to do that on Windows XP:

o Goto to the Windows Start menu and select Setting / Network Connections (alternatively open the Network Connections icon from the Windows control panel). This should open a window titled Network Connections.

o In this window go to the main menu and select Advanced / Advanced Settings. This should open a window titled Advanced Settings.

o In this window make sure the Adapters and Bindings tab is selected. Inside this tab under Connections change the order of the network interfaces such that the one you need is first and then click OK."

So I did this and finally was a Happy Camper - Tversity appears and generally stays. When it isn't there, I found that you just need to "Restart Sharing Service" on the Tversity menu. The Denon appears as SLA 5500/20 in Tversity.

So I hope this saves someone a lot of the frustration I had figuring this all out

One thing (of many) I don't like about the Media Server on the Denon is that you cannot save a playlist as a favorite. You can save a song as a favorite, but the Denon just stops after it completes.

Also wish it would allow you to give names to preset channels for Internet Stations as well as HD radio as a source. Not a very useful feature without this. Who can remember what A1, A2. etc are!

I used Mediatomb as mediaserver from my ubuntu computer and worked great...until the networking of the 3310 died. I dont think I'll ever purchase another denon.

Make sure that HDMI-CEC (Samsung - Anynet+, Panny - Viera Link, Sony - Bravia link, etc.) is set to OFF in your HDTV setup menu.

I'm in the -32 to -22 range 95% of the time but am running small speakers. Anything under -25 gets pretty loud for me.

FYI: 4 of my speakers are Definitive ProMonitor 1000's, the center is a 2000, and the supercube is powered. I think they have a 5.25 speaker in there? I'm on the fence for adding the extra 2 speakers for 7.1... Thinking of the BPX's?

I like the sound better from the Denon then the Onkyo's.. Not sure how much of that can be adjusted but I had a local store do a reset of several receivers to factory defaults and then listened to them. Between the Pioneer, Onkyo, and Denon I liked the Denon the best. I have not had the networking failures some folks have had but did have a few issues getting the firmware up to date... After a few resets it finally took. Personally I'm not a huge fan of all the extra codec's some of these come with... I find myself sticking to the dolby ones. I would guess that as long as you get the codec you want it does not matter which receiver you get? They are all digital/chip based so its not like distortion is an issue anymore? The main difference I can see is in the menu's?

With that said if I had a local store that carried Sony's ES line I would have purchased one of those instead mainly because a few years ago I decided to standardize and everything I own is Sony. Not sure why I made an exception for this?

Hello guys & gals,

I'm currently in the market for a receiver and have read almost all of the posts in this thread. I noticed some pricing in the $900 range from a few people with 6th ave but I went to the site and it's in the $1200 range. Did I miss out on a huge sale from these guys for this receiver?

Thanks,

I am considering upgrading to a Denon 3310CI after it being recommended by a local av guy. I am running an Infinity Beta system. Sensitivity of the tower and center speakers are 91dB, and the sensitivity of the 3 surround speakers is lower at 87dB. Currently I am running a Yamaha HTR-5750 that I think is just not powerful enough to run the speakers well...at least at the volumes I sometimes want.

http://www.yamaha.ca/av/PDFs/Manuals...5750_5740E.pdf

Thoughts as to the upgrade and what I can expect in terms of improved performance...enough to drive this speaker system?

Authorized sellers may not be permitted to publish prices lower than a minimum established by the manufacturer. This is definitely the case for Denon products. Therefore, call the seller and ask for the best available price. You'll definitely be able to get the AVR-3310CI from an authorized Denon seller in your target price range.

I've only seen limited feedback from those who have installed this new DXS feature upgrade on the 3310CI. I currently listen to mostly music with my two fronts and have a 7.1 set-up for movies. I have Paradigm Monitor 11's v.6 in the front, I'm not in the market for more speakers so I would put my old Onkyos as the Front Height speakers for the DXS. You guys think I will still experience the same clarity that is expected from this new feature?

Until later: Dave Matthews Band: "Say Goodbye" Album: Crash... BLAST IT!

Also: Those of you with a Mac and are looking to stream your iTunes music wirelessly throughout your home network; there is a great application called "NiceCast" and it works great with the Denon 3310CI. (there is about a 3 second delay but it is well worth it; sound quality goes upto 320kbps)

1) it's DSX, not DXS

2) there is A TON of feedback on DSX in other threads, especially relevant would be Denon 4310 since its DSX implementation is identical to that in the 3310 (although you can also check out Onkyo X07 threads and Denon 4810).

3) if you want to try height speakers, you can do it for free. Your receiver already has Dolby PLIIz which can generate "height" speakers, so you can at least get a taste for if you like the effect or not.

For the best deals you normally need to either email them directly or call them also watch for name your own price deals and such.

Hey there,
I currently have the 3310ci, and love it. My questions involves getting some new Klipsch RF-83's. Since the speakers are rated at 250w, and my reciever outputs 120w per channel. I was wondering, since the RF-83's have four posts, can I wire both the front channel and back channels from the Denon 3310 into the RF-83's. I know this would make my 7.1 system into a 5.1 system, but it would be cheaper than buying an amplifier. I am a noob, so sorry if some of the terminology is a bit off.
Thanks all.
You're referring to "passive bi-amping", which most will agree generally doesn't improve the audio quality, and any gain in power is very negligible as the amps all feed from the same power supply. If you truly want more power (which likely isn't required actually) then you'll need to get a dedicated external amp. Keep in mind that at average volume (75db), the AVR is using only about 5-8W of power. The only way to use anywhere near the full power is if you raise the volume to "raise the roof" levels.
"If you truly want more power (which likely isn't required actually) then you'll need to get a dedicated external amp. "

I'm sure they will sound fine to me with out more power, but when I emailed Klipsch, they stated:
"120 watts per channel may be under powering the RF-83s enough to cause problems in the long run. You may want to use an additional amplifier to assure the RMS for the RF-83s is met"

This has left me hesitent to get RF-83's. I am getting a steal of a deal on the RF-83's, otherwise I wouldn't have the cash to even go down that road. So purchasing an additional amplifier is really out of the question for me right now. Should I just let this deal pass?
that is pure marketing BS. what kind of "problems in the long run"?? every speaker mfgr wants you to think their speakers are SOO good than only a fancy expensive amp can do them justice. The 250W rating of the speaker is just an indication of MAX power handling capacity.

The Klipsch RF-83 are 8-ohms nominal and have a sensitivity rating of 100dB with ONE WATT at 1 meter distance. That means ONE HUNDRED DECIBELS with ONE WATT. Unless you are powering these things to ridiculous, louder-than-a-movie-theater levels, you will be totally fine. And, if you ever hit that point in the future and feel as though you want more power, you can always add an amp down the road.

EDIT: here is a professional review with bench tests:
http://www.soundandvisionmag.com/spe...tem-page2.html

what they said:

Quote:

The RF-83 system excels with dynamic capability and high sensitivity. The front and surround-channel speakers will play loud with little amplifier power, and all channels have exceptional bass.

Am I the only one having this problem? I will be watching through the component DVD input and it will change over to the CD input. There's no prompting from us, hell I don't think there's anything plugged into the CD input. So I'm confused. It happens on additional inputs as well - it will randomly change with no input from us.

This also only started happening a few weeks ago when I updated the firmware and re-attached the networking cable (I had to get a larger switch for the entertainment hub). I'm about to unplug the network cable again and see if that fixes it, but it's not the solution I want.

Anyone?
