Whoops! Somehow part of my message got nuked... Let me re-state.

I checked my Sharp TV and found no HDMI-CEC connection set up of any type. At best it had a power down option should there be no signal coming in (which I have disabled).

Also, as I mentioned, there was no issue like this for the last 9 months between the set and 3310. It's just that recently when the Networking cable was plugged back in and firmware updated.

Sharp named their HDMI-CEC "Aquos Link"

Doesn't exist on my tv. I looked and looked. Even the manual doesn't list it. I have the LC-46D62U.

Are you sure you selected the HD audio track on the BD as it's not always the default track which could be why you're only getting DTS on the front panel display?

A few folks (various models) have occasionally reported random source changes that you describe, although don't recall a solution was actually reported when it was not HDMI-CEC related, although they all had Harmony remotes as I recall. In your case, it would seem to be related to the recent firmware upgrade and use of the networking cable so work along those lines.

Now, pop in Jewel and it works fine.

The guys at Denon are dumbfounded and are blaming this on the Blu Ray disc codecs, and that the copyright info is hindering this.

A defective BD is also within reason. Can you test the BD on another AVR or a neighbor's AVR?
For those of you that don't know already, just open the safari browser on the phone and type in the IP of the DENON and you "should" see that it automatically places "IPHONE" after the IP in the address bar. The GUI is brilliant! Very easy to read and to use. I suppose this was done in a recent FW upgrade. Enjoy!!!

The Klipsch RF-83 are 8-ohms nominal and have a sensitivity rating of 100dB with ONE WATT at 1 meter distance. That means ONE HUNDRED DECIBELS with ONE WATT. Unless you are powering these things to ridiculous, louder-than-a-movie-theater levels, you will be totally fine. And, if you ever hit that point in the future and feel as though you want more power, you can always add an amp down the road.

what they said:

Batpig,

I am getting a loud popping noise from my left rear speak and a soft one from the right rear speaker when I switch cable channels. This did not happen until I ran Audyssey. I called Denon and they did a reset. The popping went away but came back again when I ran the Audyssey setup again. My cable connections from speaker to receiver are correct.
Do I have a bad receiver or could it be something else?
does it go away when you turn Audyssey MultEQ off? Can you isolate it to something specific (e.g. Dynamic EQ) or anything?

If all your wiring is OK then I'm sorry to say that it is probably a bad unit...

EDIT: actually, if it is ONLY happening with the cable box it could just be an HDMI issue, does it happen with any other sources?

I'm about to pull the trigger on a 3310 since an authorized online retailer has a nice discount going right now. I've been waffling between this unit and the Onkyo 807 but I think the Denon will meet my needs better. Any words of encouragement would help since I've never spent this much on audio equipment before!

I plan to use it evenly between regular TV, BD and DVD movies, FM / CD stereo listening, online / PC music streaming, and PC game audio. I have Polk Audio Monitor 70's and plan to order the matching center and surrounds this weekend, but haven't decided on anything for a sub yet.

I'm upgrading from a very early '90's Sony TA-AV411 receiver rated at 135W @ 0.9% THD so this should be a big improvement!
do you need the extras of the 3310? With those "entry level ish" speakers, you may be fine with the 2310 model and then put the extra $$ towards, say, a better subwoofer.

Honestly, I probably don't need this level of a receiver, but I seem to always to gravitate towards the "prosumer" products. I want to try HD radio and it's built in here, not sure about the 2310. I also really like the firmware upgrade via network option, streaming network media, etc, along with configuring the device with a web browser. I don't need a lot of the video conversion abilities, and pure clean audio power is a big priority, balanced with all the other technoligical goodies. I'd also like to try the extra zones with my CCTV security video among other things.

I can afford this unit but it's at the top end of what I can spend.

I should also mention that my previous speakers were a pair of Kenwood JL-800 from the early / mid 1980's, so these Monitors sound awesome to me. It also dates me and my 45 year old ears a little bit.

Keep in mind that unless you're close to a radio station that is broadcasting in "digital" in order to get a strong "digital" signal, it's likely the HD tuner will revert back to the "analog" signal instead.

Are most of you guys using banana plugs for your speaker wire connections?

I noticed it is a challenge to get 7 speaker wires connected to the back of the unit using pins with 12 AWG wire.

Lastly, where is the best place to source banana plugs nowadays? I would think they would be the preferred choice as the wires would flow out the back easier than pins.

Although certainly more challenging to work with, I use bare wire 12 AWG. Monoprice is a great source for banana plugs though, more likely the "closed screw" version being more popular then the "open screw" version you provided in your link.

It's hard to isolate the problem because if Mult EQ is off, Dyn EQ is off. If Dyn EQ is on, then Mult EQ is set to Audyssey. The popping sound is twice as loud when I use Dyn EQ, but still there when I don't use it. The popping sound occurs when I push the channel changer button on my Cox cable remote. The only other equipment I have is a Panasonic BD-35. I hear the popping when I turn the Pany remote on and off, but not when I switch tracks on a CD.

What do you think? Please let me know if there is something else I can check to provide more info to you.

thanks

The specs on Denon's website show that this model has the HD tuner built in. I hope they're correct because I have a directional antanna in my attic pointing to the local broadcast antenna farm located less than 10 miles from me.

I just ordered the receiver today so I'll know for sure soon!

Yes, the 3310 supports HD radio.

Hello all,

I purchased a 3310 back in December and after finally getting it all set up so that the inputs (in particular) worked for me, I've been sitting back and enjoying it. I have to say "thanks" to batpig for your Denon page!

A problem that is happening more and more to me is while I'm watching TV.

I purchased my cable companies HD-PVR. I've got it connected to my 3310 via component cables. I have it set up through Quick Select 2. Typically I turn on the receiver by pressing Quick Select 2 to fire up the 3310. What I'm finding, that is continually happening (although not all the time), is that while watching a program the 3310 "seems" to be switching to my Quick Select 1 selection. I base this by the display coming up on the TV. (I have all 3 Quick Selects manually labelled). Although I can't confirm it, it seems to be happening after about a half hour of TV viewing.
I can't figure out why it's doing this.

I have never downloaded any of the firmware updates. Perhaps this is something that's been addressed. I'd just have to go out and get a very long ethernet cable, in order to do this.

Has anyone else experienced this or heard of a solution?

Thanks in advance

Sorry, my mistake as I pulled up the wrong spec page. The 3310 does indeed have an HD Tuner built in.

Make sure that the HDMI-CEC feature in the TV and the Quick Select #1 component are both set to OFF.

After performing the Audyssey configuration over the weekend, I was really surprised by the difference it made for watching movies etc. The surround experience and bass response was significantly improved. The only thing I have noticed is that it seems like my center channel could use a little boosting as dialog in some movies I tested was too quiet.

So, I figured I would just increase the center channel a bit, but adjusting individual channels seems to be greyed out now... Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place, or it's because the Audyssey config has taken "control" but it was a bit unexpected.

I sampled audio in the 4 seating spots of my family room so maybe I should have done the last two samples as well ?

Any ideas ?
1. You can improve the dialog a couple ways ... with Dyn EQ enabled (now that you've run AUTO SETUP), you can set the Reference Level Offset to 10 or 15. You can also adjust any speaker volume by pressing the CH LVL button on the remote and using the arrow keys to select the correct channel and volume level adjustment.

2. You want to take all 6 positions when doing AUTO SETUP in order to maximize the data input for Audyssey to use. It's also generally suggested that rather than place the mic at each actual seat, you take the first position from the "primary" seating position (ear height), and then the remaining 5 positions within a 2' radius of that 1st position.
I have experience the popping sound also.
Mine occur when the receiver decodes or switches the sound mode. ex.(Switching from "Muti-channel" to "Dolby PLII"). I only happen when I play Blu-ray in the PS3. I also hear a "pop" when I power off the unit from the speakers.

- Do yours lights dim a bit when you turn on the reciever? Seems like i have too many thirsty vampires on the same line. ???
- HD Radio sucks! My area does not provide HD radio for the stations I listen too. I went to the HDradio site and they list over 75 stations, but i cant get them to come in clear like I thought HD radio provided. So dont get hyped over HD Radio!
- Any luck with "Powerline adapters"?? Denon suggest hard wire LAN cable.

Picked up an Apple TV 160 for my system.

Anyone have success setting up/configuring an Apple TV via HDMI to the Denon 3310?

When I try connecting the ATV to Denon 3310 via HDMI, I get nothing (no audio, no video).

I have had success syncing it to itunes via component video cables to the HD TV.

I would really like to get it to work via HDMI to the 3310.

If anyone has had success via the HDMI route to the Denon 3310 please advise how you did it (which HDMI input, ect.)

Thanks for your help!

I thought I would be a fan of the new on screen volume and mute displays, but I find them more distracting than helpful. The volume one is extremely unattractive too. I've turned off the volume display and other text display features, but the mute text is still displayed.

Has anyone figured out how to turn this "feature" off?

Matt
the "mute" display is controlled by the "text on/off" in the GUI menu.

If this is "off" and you are still seeing the "mute" text, there is a good chance it is actually being generated by your television through the HDMI-CEC connection. What type of display do you have? This is most often noted with Samsung (Anynet+) and Sharp (AquosLink).

sometimes the ATV needs to be reset to recognize the HDMI connection. Hook everything up and disconnect the other cables (component/optical/etc) and then unplug the ATV, wait 10 seconds, and plug it back in. It should recognize the HDMI connection. Does it work when you go straight to the display w/ HDMI?

Note that it may take 10+ seconds for the HDMI to sync up and display. I and others have noted this extreme delay with ATV + Denon AVR's. Personally, I run the ATV with component + optical for this reason, because the sync delay was very annoying. You don't lose any quality this way as ATV isn't sending any hi-rez audio and optical is plenty.
