My question is if this will carry sound as well as video to my Denon, or will I need to wire audio outputs separately. Next, what Audio formats will be sent out? Many new computers have built in Blu-rays, and I wonder if they will output DTS-HD to the Denon with an integrated 7.1 sound card. And will this work through just the HDMI?

Hopefully my questions make sense.

Newer PCs bought today with HDMI jacks are able to send audio and video out the HDMI jack. If the PC has a built in Blu-Ray player then it should also be able to send the HD audio codecs on the BD to the AVR as well over the HDMI cable connection. Keep in mind, however, that HTPC video cards don't always play nice with AVR connections, generally only allow standard TV video resolution (eg. 720p, 1080p).

The alternative to waiting is purchasing a "new" unit from them for MSRP of $1500 or trying to get approved for a refurb replacement. A repaired refurbished unit of a model with known issues. Any advice on what I can do?

Glad I saw your post before I shipped off mine for network card replacement. I'd rather live without network functionality for a while than be without an AVR for months.

I'll probably wait a few more months before I ship mine in.

I took it to the local shop that Denon's website specified. When I called Denon, the supervisor I spoke to there, offered a refurb. He was unwilling to give me an eta as to how long repairs may take. When I asked him for further details he said he would have to check on it but refused to do it while I was on the phone. Never received a followup call. I've waited long enough and will not wait any longer. I filed with the BBB to start and next will come the endless harassment of them and their business partners. I won't "eat" this anymore than I did my Sony LCOS tv.

Do your homework and make sure you get the right video card. I built mine with an ATI 5450 based card. It handles all the standard video codecs in the gpu itself, so even a slow computer works fine. It is also low power and fanless, so it's perfect for an HTPC. This card will do 1080p and HD audio over HDMI to my 3310 without a hitch. Just don't expect to play the latest games with it.

I am hoping to be able to run games on mine. I have been looking at a ATI 5570 video card. Won't this be able to handle it?

Yes the entire 5xxx series are good for HTPC. As long as the added heat dissipation and fan noise aren't an issue for your installation, the more powerful models should work fine too.

Yes, you get sound and video through the HDMI out of your pc (I've done it).
Don't know about the audio format.
I had all sorts of issues getting my HP laptop to play Blurays out to my plasma.

Running into a strange problem.

I wanted to go 7.1 using the 'front height' for the heck of it and can't get any sound out of the speakers. The amp assign is set to front height and the speaker connects are in the right inputs in the back.
I thought it might be the speakers but if i plug them into the front main inputs, I get sound.

Am I missing something?

EDIT:

I have to add that I did go into the test tone section of my avr and the front height speakers still didn't produce any sound/test tone while the other 5 did.

^^
If you confirmed the speakers are connected to the Surr Back/Amp Assign speaker posts vice Front B, and AMP ASSIGN is set to Front Height, you should be able to get a test tone from them. After storing your current config file to a PC (p. 82), reset the microprocessor (p. 103) and rerun AUTO SETUP again.

So i'm supposed to hook them up the the SURR BACK/AMP ASSIGN posts and not the FRONT SPEAKER POSTS? I have them hooked up to the FRONT SPEAKERS B posts in the back....I thought SURR BACK/AMP ASSIGN posts were only to be used for the BACK surrounds?
You thought wrong..... thus the "assign" part.....

Correct. See p. 34 in your Owner's manual for the various AMP ASSIGN settings. The Front B connection is generally only used when you've either got a dedicated set of "music only" speakers for stereo listening or if you want to send the same audio selected in the main zone to another zone.

[quote=roames;17993895]Has anybody found an answer for this problem below? Could this be the DSX upgrade? I ask this because when you click "Enter" as advised, it takes you to an "Add New Feature" section, not "Firmware Upgrade."

They are two different things. Your Firmware Update is showing current and you're getting the other message because of the Audyssey DSX upgrade. You do have to pay for this upgrade ($100.), however. If you're not planning on upgrading and don't like the message you can turn the notification off.

Ah, ok, so you hook up either the back surround or front height speakers to those specific posts and select the amp assign from there? Awesome, thanks!

I set up a 3310 last week, and its much quieter at the same dB than my 1909 was, e.g. -19dB on the 1909 might be the same as about -9 on the 3310. This is with MultiEq and Dynamic Volume off.

I had a look in the speaker settings and found that most speaker levels are set well into the negative range, i.e. speakers "-8", sub "-12", im pretty sure the 1909 didnt have things this low. This was with a 6-point audessy calibration in quite a small theatre room, with large speakers.

I thought it might have been due to the sub volume being too high (not an issue before and not changed), but if this were the case, i'd expect to see speakers in the positive range, and sub in the negative.

I will have a play and bump each speaker level up by the same dB, to keep the relative ranges the same, but it is a bit strange.

Any other thoughts?
Although there's nothing wrong with the speaker settings, your sub maxed out at -12db does indeed mean there is too much bass. Turn the volume/gain knob on the sub down a notch or two and rerun AUTO SETUP again until you get something closer to 0db (but at least not -12db). You'll likely want to use Dyn EQ set to ON for each input. If you still want to raise the speaker channel levels after a few weeks of listening, then bump them up a few db.

When I ran auto setup last night with the front height it kep saying one speaker was out of phase but I double checked the connection and they are in phase, so I let the setup do its thing. The result was hollow sounding. Is the speaker out of phase on purpose to get a more spacial sound or something?
Hi guys I installed my 3310 last night but can't get any audio on co ax in to work. I have assigned the inputs etc as I used to with my 1910. I was able to use an optical cable instead so I don't actually need the co ax in but its bothering me that the receiver might be faulty. I bought from the UK (to Ireland) so shipping back be costly. Any ideas on what might be wrong? Cheers mick

As you're familiar with input assignments, try resetting the microprocessor (p. 103).

Sometimes mfr's purposefully set their speakers out of phase, other times, it's just reported that way due to room acoustics. As long as you've confirmed the wiring is correct, you did the right thing by just clicking IGNORE and moving on with the setup.

If I reset the processor will I loose all settings I have input? Yes I'm using input assigns and input select to choose digital input etc

Yes, you will. If you haven't already, save your settings to a file on your PC using the Web Control feature (p. 82).

Tried a reset but still no joy. Thanks for tip on saving settings cheers mick

Are you using a dedicated source name for the coax input?
Tried various combinations..beginning to think it may be the cable..(even though it worked fine with 1910) I don't actually need the co ax inputs so think I'm just going to forget about it

Can I also ask about firmware updates. I get an upgrade notification but when I accept I get a message about not having purchased any new features? Do I need to register my unit with denim or sonething? Cheers mick

The "upgrade" you are being alerted to is the DSX upgrade ($100 US) which you must first pay for via the Denon website, although not sure of the procedure on the Denon Europe website. You can turn this notice off by setting "Upgrade Notification" (p. 40) to OFF. As long as "Update Notification" is still set to ON, you will still be notified when firmware updates are available.

I was just wondering if anybody knows how to check to see if I have the new or old network card in the GUI menus. I would rather check it that way then having to take the top off the receiver. I had a scare yesterday where I thought my network card was going out. It would freeze up when I tried to access my media server. I reset my computer and it was fine but it got me wondering which card I had in my 3310.

Hi folks, after I ran audssey it set my surround crossover at 60hz and my fronts at 40hz. I would have thought these should have been around 80hz?

You should read through the audyssey section of my faq:
http://batpigworld.com/fadq.html

Auddyssey is actually measuring what is happening in your room, not your preconceptions
