Still on the fence with buying this baby.

Anyone else having problems updating the firmware?

A certain Etailer has 80 units in stock, and will drop ship for $949.
I upgraded a few days ago. The Denon said it would take 27 minutes. It took about 35, seeming to hang up at the very end for a while. Otherwise it went just fine. I have a hardwire connection, so maybe that is best. I imagine it could be a bit more difficult with wireless.
I have upgraded firmware twice with my AVR 3310ci using a wired connection both time and each time the estimated update time was quite a bit off both time took about 1 1/2 to 2 time as long as the estimated time just had to be patient and as jeffbar stated they seemed to hang up for time before completing successfully. I do not think I would even attempt a firmware update over a wireless connection.
I have upgraded the firmware several times with no problem. It always takes a bit longer than Denon says but ends up OK. I am also using a hardwire network connection, Jeffbar maybe right that this is best. I also have no problems with network control or internet radio. Dan
post #575 of 3806
My experience was exactly as others describe. Just give it the ol' Ron Popeil technique SET IT AND FORGET IT! When updating I also made sure my source was not an internet connection just in case after the reboot it has issues immediately going to an online source. I also used a hardwire.

My Denon unit still doesn't connect to the network. My router assigns an IP address to it and i can ping the unit for the routers setup page (Dlink DIR-655). However, this is my second unit that fails to connect to the network. I have basically given up on this feature ever working. It's too bad tho because my first unit did work for a bit before it completely stopped and I did like the internet radio. The second unit has never worked.

Would anybody be able to provide explanation as to why my Audyssey dynamic volume light (green led) turns off upon changing the Surround Back setting from "none" to "yes"? As soon as I indicate there to be surround back speakers present, Audyssey seems to be directly affected. I am then forced to "restore" the settings after the Audyssey Auto Setup was performed. Still love my 3310 however. Thanks!

I have my 3310 in a closed cabinet (with appropriate heat removal) however my remote won't penerate the wood door. Can I purchase an IR extender or something like that for this receiver? Where do I plug it in?
I have a 4 month old unit that doesn't connect to the network. Same symptoms that others report - the router sees the unit and assigns it an IP address, it responds to pings, but the network never fully comes up on the 3310CI. Network status on the Denon does not show the assigned IP address and it is stuck in the "Network Connecting" mode. No network features operate.

Sigh. Wish I had tested the network operation first thing out of the box, before even installing the unit into my entertainment center. I could have swapped for a different unit at my local retailer then. But no, I had to let this thing age for 4 months before ever running the ethernet cable to it...

Denon phone support was polite but said they were unfamiliar with this problem. (Hmmm - uninformed, or untruthful?) I'm hoping that a local service center is able to re-flash the firmware on these boxes via RS-232 but the phone support folks couldn't even tell me whether that was possible or not. Does anybody know if the "Authorized Denon Service Centers" are able to do this? Or the "Super Service Centers"??? Not that I know what's going wrong here but it seems a good first step would always be to make sure you have the latest firmware installed.

What's up with Denon and firmware on these boxes anyway? Owners have no ability to update firmware without a network? That's just stupid. Heck, it looks like we don't even have the ability to read out the current firmware revision. That's stupid squared.

I've tried various routers and switches, all 100 Mbps capable. Thinking of digging out an old 10 Mb hub to put on the last link to the unit to see if it might possibly work better at a different line rate. Because maybe it is a physical layer thing. A hub would also let me see all traffic on an attached PC where I could sniff packets with wireshark.

I sure hate shipping my unit all the way from CA to NJ to have this unit fixed or swapped out for a refurb but that may be what has to happen. What a waste of resources...

Yes, plug it in to the "Room To Room" Input jack.

I have read through this entire thread and not one person has said how good this amp sounds I am currently thinking about upgrading to this amp from my current Onkyo 705. So how does it sound?

When you add speakers in the speaker config, Audyssey needs to be re-run to create filters for the new speakers. You can't use the Audyssey features unless MultEQ has calibrated the system -- when you tell the receiver that you have now added two new speakers, it no longer is operating with a calibrated system and thus it demands that you re-run Audyssey so it can calibrate the new speakers.

Yes, there is a remote in/out jack on the back, you can plug into it with a standard mono 1/8" mini plug (the other end plugs into the IR extender).

(EDIT: beaten by JChin!)

Well I upgraded from a Marantz 8500 and I would say the Marantz 8500 would beat the Denon 3310 for music. However for Home Theater Movie and TV watching I would have to give the Denon the edge especially with the Audyssey setup it brought a new level of listening experience to movies I can hear sound effects the Marantz never brought out before.

Well, I wonder if this is a solid improvement from the 5 year old Sony V555ES Receiver?

So many good Christmas Sales tempting me to make the purchase. Any comments from you guys?
it will be a pretty big step up from the old Sony. I had a DA555ES and the changes in 10 years worth of processing improvements is pretty huge.
Actually, it is the STR-V555ES.

I heard you the first time and my answer is still the same

The V555ES and the DA555ES are basically identical, the DA555ES was just one year earlier. It went DA555ES > V555ES > DA5ES...
Thanks, and dialing the number to make the order.

PS - In the process of being a "Batpig" wannabe.

I upgraded to the 3310 from a Pioneer VSX-D711 (about 8 years old)....the difference is night & day.

The Denon has a warmer sound, can be cranked up without being harsh, has much more detailed sound (depth), low-end is excellent (I don't even have my subwoofer turned on), etc. I hear subtle sounds in DVDs that weren't noticeable with the Pioneer. And I haven't even run Audyssey yet. A very worthwhile upgrade in sound for me. The upgrade in features/flexibility is beyond huge.

It was a big improvement over my top of the line 8500 Marantz which was 4 years old only thing the Marantz did better was playing actual music mind you the Denon is no slouch however the Marantz excelled in that and had some nice added features for Music such as a hdcd which really made my hdcd's come to life. But for Home Theater use the Marantz was good but not even in the same league as the Denon it wins that hands down and its video processing really cleans up my Dish Network sd channels making watching them a much better experience.

Dbrun (and others): An addendum on my networking issue.

As fate would have it, the "germs" my kids constantly brought home seemed to kill my PC. Ultimately I had to reset the computer to its original state via the advanced tools provided by HP. Wiped everything clean (I had backup).

Huge hassle, but it seemed to clear up all the networking issues I was having with the Denon - accessing photos and music from my main PC. It wasn't the fault of the router or switch after all. Sometimes a networking issue was born at the creation, so to speak.

Not surprised. I bought the PC from Office Depot. It had briefly been a floor model and was set up by someone at the store with an administrative account I never had the password too. They did something funny to the PC.

Unfortunately not all is entirely well. Access I do have and the photos work fine through the NET/USB input. Yet music sounds like it's begin scraped thru a very narrow pipe and is unlistenable. Tried a variety of MP3 files and all had the problem.

What's more, most of my 500 albums are in FLAC but they won't play. Despite adding Flac codecs and such to WMP, and even though the Denon is supposed to handle FLAC, I keep getting "file errors."

I can see all my FLAC music and the album art, but no go. It won't matter unless I can figure out why the sound sucks, but if I do, I might have to create a second library with all my music in MP3 or WMA as well.
WMP does not serve FLAC to DLNA devices...you need Twonky Media!
Tks Darthpaul, I will give Twonky a shot, though it still doesnt resolve the problem of terrible sound even with MP3 files.

That's puzzling. I used the Panny Vieracast program to access Amazon Video on Demand and watched a hi-def show with no interruptions. My network speed can't be the problem.

Just noticed this on the Denon UK site:

Software upgrade for AVR-3310
Adds Audyssey DSX to AVR-3310

Audyssey DSX sound processing technology extends 5.1- and 7.1-channel sound sources to a wider and higher dimension considering the human perception that is usually focussed on the front. A more spacious sound is achieved through a pair of wide speakers placed wider than the usual front speakers, and a greater sense of height in sound is achieved by adding two height speakers above the front.
Until now, Audyssey DSX was only available with Denon's upper class AVR-4310 and AVR-4810. With this new feature upgrade, current and future owners of the AVR-3310 get the chance to add a unique technology to their home theatre. In the future, Denon will continue to sell the AVR-3310 without Audyssey DSX to give their customers the right to choose whether they would like to have this feature or not.
During 2009, several thousand owners of an AVR-4308, AVR-3808, AVC- or AVP-A1HD succesfully used a similar opportunity to upgrade their devices with new features at a fair price point thus further increasing the value of their Denon product.

a very cool feature upgrade, and obviously something they needed to do to stay competitive with Onkyo (which offers DSX all the way down to the 707 model which is available for under $600 street price!)

Okay I am an newbie to the forum... I have the LG bd 390 and the 3310CI. I see I need to update the firmware in order to get these two to play nice together. The room where it all will go is not yet set up yet for the network
Can I just take the receiver and plug the ethernet cable to my DSL router and to get the firmware updates and navigate from the receiver display or do you need a TV to see it from the GUI?
yes, you can do it all from the display. just drag it over to the router, plug it in, and start updating.

dbrunodna,

As has been stated, you can keep your receiver/components hidden (I have done this with all of my electronics). Xantech makes a kit that can be found on the internet for approximately $50 (I use Xantech's kit to control multiple hidden electronic units.). The Xantech kits come with "repeaters" but you can use mini-plug cables, which are plugged into the back of the Denon. The kit I purchased also comes with an IR receiver, which is the most costly part.

Will be intresting as to when it becomes available in the US and what kind of price Denon will put on the upgrade.
