I had the same problem and installing a different media server [TVersity - free], fixed it for me.

Yes, you do need to have media server software running on some device on your network. If you have a networked Windows PC then you undoubtedly have Windows Media Player, which is a suitable media server. You have to enable media sharing on the PC. Exactly how you do that depends on which version of Windows and Windows Media Player you have. Your firewall may need some setting adjustments as well.

Hope that's enough to get you started.

From what I can tell, there are NO new firmware updates. So unless you've paid for the upgrade, your receiver is working as it should. Denon just needs to stop pinging people who don't want the upgrade.

If you have "Upgrade Notification" turned on, which it is by default, then you should receive a notification when an upgrade--such as Audyssey DSX--becomes available. If you haven't already registered and paid for the upgrade, however, attempting to "Add New Feature" will fail.

Upgrade notifications can be turned off at Menu > Manual Setup > Network Setup > Other > Upgrade Notification.
The problem is that the upgrade notificaton is showing up as a firmware notification. When you acknowledge that you want the firmware, it fails as a feature upgrade. This should be simple for Denon to fix on their end. Has anyone spoken to them?

Has anyone tried playing 5.1 channel audio using the media server function of the Denon 3310ci?

I've tried streaming a 5.1 channel WMA file from a DLNA file server but get a 'file format error' from the Denon. The same file plays when streamed from a computer running Windows Media Player, but it gets converted to 2 channels.

The Denon specs state that the media server function supports WMA, among other file formats, but I've been unsuccessful at streaming 5.1 channel audio.

Any help would be appreciated...
I wouldn't be surprised if you are restricted to 2-ch music streams. since it is an audio-only media server (no video) there isn't much need for them to build in support for multichannel computer audio streams...

Hi, this is my first post.

Firstly, my denon avr 3310 is connected to a samsung series 5, 40" and speakers are 7.1 psb alpha speakers (FL, FR = psb alpha T1) (SL, SR, SBL, SBR = psb alpha LR1 monitor speakers)

my first issue is - how do I use the front Bi-Amp for the psb alpha T1 speakers? I'm confused about this. Currently I just use the A outputs to my FL and FR but there is actually 2 sets of inputs on each speaker (2 reds, 2 blacks, with both reds connected by a bridge and same for the blacks)

secondly, in the case of media streaming from PC, my avr only recognises files in folders that WMP told to "monitor for media". It does not actually "see" the PC and all the folders that are "shared" on the network. Is it possible to NOT use WMP as the media server? Is there any alternative for my windows PC?

thirdly, I can't seem to make my avr "mix" 2 audio inputs into one. Is it even possible? I have a dvd player connected through HDMI and the 3310 plays back the 5.1 audio and upscaled video perfectly fine. however, it automatically shuts out the remaining red/white rca input & optical input assigned to the same "source" so plugging my ipod thru analog red/white on the same source just leaves my ipod ignored by the avr.

If i switch the "audio decoding" from auto / hdmi to analog - it plays the VIDEO from the hdmi input but takes the audio from my ipod (analog red/white rca) and now ignores the audio coming in from the hdmi cable.

Is there any way I can get this avr to play 1 video source and 2 audio sources overlapping at the same time? I know this is a weird requirement but I urgently need some help on this... thanks for any help at all..

I queried my local support - I'm supposed to pay them first and give them my receiver's code as shown in the add new feature menu at the bottom right hand side. Once they receive my payment, they would "unlock" the function.

Attached is an extract from the official response from the company:

Dear Sir,
regards to the AVR-3310 firmware upgrade, it will include the following upgrade features:
1) Audyssey DSX
Upgrade price: SGD$145.00

If transfer from overseas, customer has to bare the bank charges - thus upgrade price is SGD$195.00

*Approx. 60-90 mins to update to the latest firmware on end user side.
Once payment is made, we will inform you to proceed with your upgrade and email you an instruction manual.

*2-3 days is required for the registration.

Kindly do a bank transfer payment or a crossed cheque to the following info:
Name: xxxxxxxx
Acct no.: xxxxxxx
Branch: xxxxxxxx
Swift Code: xxxxxxx
Address: xxxxxxxxxx

Do inform us once you have made payment together with
1. your name
2. contact no
3. full model of player and colour of player
4. ID no
(ID no. is located when you log in to option setup, click on add new feature and the upgrade ID should be on your right hand bottom corner.)

Thank you and have a nice day!

you cannot bi-amp if you are running 7.1. There are only seven amplifiers in the receiver, so if you are already connecting seven speakers, where are the extra two amps for bi-amping? You are out of amps! The A/B front speakers are the same amp, they just allow you to switch between two different speakers (e.g. you have one for movies and another dedicated pair of speakers for music).

If you want more power, get an external amp and connect to the pre-outs. Receiver bi-amping is fairly worthless anyway.

no, absolutely not. I don't think any AVR will let you do this.

Thank you Evan and Thank you MSAndrews for the suggestions how to get JPEG images to play from my pc on TV through the DENON. It was enabling Windows media sharing on the PC that fixed the problem.

Second problem. Some of the Camera images are 10 second "avi" movies mixed in with the JPEG images on the PC. These have been placed in a "video" folder in Windows media player on the PC. But I dont see them on the DENON Media Server where my pictures are. Is there any way to play my short movie clips from the PC through the DENON on the TV?
Yesterday I received my 3310 and SVS PC12 plus. So I was overwhelmed by the big boxes UPS delivered.
Okay..my thoughts:
The 3310 is a lot heaver than the Sony HTIB I had before. Makes the Sony feel like a feather. I quickly gain a headache trying to connect and understand the GUI menu. The receiver was so advanced than what I was used too, that I was afraid to change any settings. I ran Audessy and it told me my speakers was out of phase, so I quickly changed the wires and ran the test again. I was impressed. The only thing that had me worried was it set my center channel to a crossover of 40. So I ran the entire test 4 times and the same results, so I left it there.
I played a Blu-ray (PS3) and I was happy with the output but the receiver didn't display Dolby True-HD or DTS-HD. If it wasnt for Bat-pig's guide, I would have been lost and very upset. Thanks! Overall I love the reciever. Watching TV and movies has changed for me and the Scaler makes the picture look good. The Sub is mind blowing! All I can say is Wow!
I do have some questions...
-The USB connection on the front is useless..cant play iPod.
The Dock(sold separately) ??? Why! Extra $$ after I barley paid for the
receiver. What is the best way to play iPod: dock, Apple RCA cables, Wadia 170i transport, etc..(I have the Apple RCA cables...Plugged it in the front Aux.V port) The music sounds okay, but videos was hot trash. [I thought the 3310 up-converts to 1080P].
Denon should have also put a HDMI port on the front for my camcorder.
- How to connect to the LAN? My router is upstairs on the other side of my house?? Do I have to run 500ft of Cat 5 cable through the walls, outside and under the house or is there another solution that works..
- How to dial in specific HD radio stations. I tried and it skips over to the next preset. ???
- Ohh, do you hear a pop in the speakers when the receiver is decoding or changing surround formats. When i was watching Kung-fu Panda...the beginning where the commercials are was Dolby, then when the movie came on it switched to "multichannel in" and that's when i heard the pop.

Over all I have upgraded my viewing experience. Im glad I bought it on SALE!
Great receiver-Cheap remotes and great sub!

Sounds like a receiver with 802.11 Wi-Fi might have been a requirement for your setup. Other than extending your LAN via a wireless bridge, and then plugging your receiver into that, you're likely going to have to run a very long cable (max distance for cat5 is 100 meters though, so no 500' cables).
I also just received my 3310. I'm replacing a Denon 2807 and so far ... I'm underwhelmed. I know I have A LOT more tweaking to do, so I'll reserve any harsh judgment.

For the record, HT is a hobby and if there isn't tweaking and adjustments to be done and everything worked as advertised .. then my hobby would be watching movies and the only forum that we would be posting in would be the movie reviews!

> Network connected right away. Did a search and said I was at the latest FW version. Upgrade says connection failed; however it isn't available, so no big deal. Played internet radio (why??) and installed Elgato EyeConnect and was able to stream iTunes without issues. If you are looking for this function, this product worked great (only on Mac). It maintained my iTunes structure and gave me access to my playlists. I have AppleTV, so don't see any use for networking at the moment other than upgrades.
> The GUI is soooo much better than the 2807. Although Denon still manages to make it a little confusing .. but not too far off the 2807.
> The remotes really stink .. not only are they just horribly designed ... they feel cheap and the IR is horrible. My Harmony pones them in all regards. Although a little confusing, the 2807 had a better remote.
> Sad to buy a new receiver with more features and it weighs 1lb less .. can't avoid the 'china' effect no matter where you go (I know some higher tier models are produced in Japan still, but it wasn't in the budget).

Next, these aren't gripes .. just things I'm working through.
> I ran the full up Audyssey process (all 6 points) and it crosses my L/R at 250Hz which seems high since they are B&W N804s.
>It also always finds my L front out of phase which is not the case. My 2807 doesn't have this same error and I did a 1-for-1 swap (yes, I reverified everything twice).
> So far I haven't been able to get it anywhere close to my 2807 in 2 channel music. So much so I refuse to think they took this much of a step backwards. I know its in the EQing but like I said .. I have more hobby-ing to do.
> After all the praise from most, I'm not sold on Dynamic EQ. Its too dramatic. I have a fairly well laid out HT and it just seems like a little much (over compensating). I know there are some other level settings so I will fiddle some more. Maybe its all related to my EQ issues.

As I said, still some issue ... but so far it does most of what it advertises. I bought from Dakmart and wanted a 2809, but they couldn't get them in stock. Settled on the 3310 knowing the differences. Dakmart shipped quick and the unit looks brand new. Plan on getting an Emotiva XPA-3 for the front 3 channels as the B&W's are hungry.

riverst - Try putting a AppleTV sized rip on your ipod and you will see better results for video. You are trying to play a video that is 10% of HD and although the scalar is good .. it isn't that good. My ATV rips are about 2G in size, but are respectable at 110" (maybe DVD but not BDP quality).

First day w/ the 3310.I am having a problem. My cable box is connected to the sat/ cable input. It works fine unless I go to the menu, change inputs or go into standby. When I go back to cab/sat I get no signal after a few minutes of changing inputs the signal finally comes through but only when gui says it is in cinema mode.Is it me or the amp?

You can use a a Media bridge to pick up a wireless signel in your network, assuming you have wireless. I just hooked up the Linksys WET610N and I'm able to see my media server and stream with out any issues. NOTE: I'm only using the G band, since I don't have a the N router.

You might consider this option, it saved me a ton of time and wiring.

Good luck!

I just received the notification again, and I carefully noted that it says "Upgraded firmware" is available, indicating a new feature is available for download once you've registered and paid for the upgrade. This is distinguished from "updated firmware," which indicates a no-cost update (e.g., bug fixes) is available for download.

Both firmware update and firmware upgrade notifications can be turned on or off independently at Menu > Manual Setup > Network Setup > Other > [Update Notification | Upgrade Notification].

For over a week now I've been having networking issues on my 3310CI. I've tried resetting it in both ways, multiple times. I've been able to ping it from my laptop, but the receiver itself doesn't recognize that it has an IP address; nor am I able to change it off of DHCP. Does anyone have any solutions? I really can't go a month without a receiver while they try to repair it themselves.
OK, I've had the 990 up and running cleanly for several days now and have had a chance to drill down into what's possible with this baby.

First, if you have an adequate turntable, you might want to check out the "restorer" function. Denon pushes it for MP3 content, but in my experience what it can do for vinyl as well as some internet radio is nothing short of amazing. Try the high quality setting. The older records, the older source material played on the internet too, seem to benefit greatly from it.

Second, if you get yourself connected to the internet, check out the GUI. At first I thought it wasn't going to provide much for me, until I realized there was a separate URL for several of the main GUI screens. Bookmark them and if you can set your browser up to open a folder as tabs, try it. I now find it a lot easier to make quick changes and the best part is I don't need the TV on in order to see the GUI. It's been particularly helpful for tailoring the sub. It also makes the wife happier because I can make changes a lot more quickly, so there's less that shows on the screen (using the 'net GUI still triggers the on-screen GUI).

Whether what I can do rivals what can be done with a Harmony, I don't know, but this is free, so for the moment, it seems like a hell of a deal.

I was surprised that the 'net GUI actually seems gives you some additional functionality, or if it doesn't, it presents you with stuff that's a little easier to find. My remote gives me three "quick select" buttons, but the 'net GUI gives me quite a few more. It's also good to be able to click on a volume slider anywhere I want and the Denon jumps to that setting, so I don't need to spend time ramping up and down.

Third, well, I understand some don't see any point to internet radio, but I'm not one of them. I'm getting a lot of free content, much of it commercial free, and very few hangs. If you haven't tried it, you should. Make your own decision on its value. With the 'net GUI it's pretty easy to access a list of favorite stations and radiodenon.com gives you the ability to add stuff that isn't already available to you. The streams vary in quality and bitrate doesn't tell the whole story. You'll have to do a little exploring to find stations that are broadcasting a stellar sound, don't hang, have few or no commercials, play stuff that interests you. But it's out there. Again, put on the Restorer function and toggle through settings if you come upon a station that is playing stuff you think is promising.

Finally, if you're wanting to connect the Denon to the 'net via a Mac, and using wifi, I just want to tell you it shouldn't be a problem. While my first 990 had a bad net card, the second connected immediately. I'm connecting very reliably using an airport express plugged in to a netgear bridge. The express is set to extend my network and the base station is an airport extreme. I'd stick with the advice to hardwire in order to do upgrades, but it works pretty well for everything else.

The Denon sees my MacBook's music and pictures folders running Twonky, though all I've done so far is play a couple of tunes to check the connection. It also sees my DirectTV receiver, brings up a listing of programs we've set to record. Not sure just what's possible with this, but I was surprised that it saw the DVR at all.

Anyway, posts on this board helped me a lot when I was trying to make a purchasing decision, so I hope this helps pay back a little.

I used a asuka powerstrip to solve my networking. It has four ports plus the outlets. It is a more expensive solution. It works. There are two versions. Go for the faster speed. GL

That model mic (DM-A409) is geared specifically for your AVR so either you need to get it back or look on eBay for another one.

Hey everyone! I'm new to this site ... but I found this thread while trying to search for a solution to my screen flashing when I played a Blu-Ray disk in my PS3.

I have gone ROUND AND ROUND trying to solve this issue ... I have a Samsung LNT4661FX LCD, Comcast HDMI cable box, PS3, Apple TV, and HAD (and still own) a Sony STR-DG820. My problem was - I would loose both the audio and video for a second or two (and get white snow and a flash of blue screen) and then it would all come back.

I had the "new main board with the new chip with the new software / firmware upgrade" installed in the TV and STILL HAD the issue.

After connecting my BRAND NEW Denon 3310-CI, I figured I was MADE IN THE SHADE when the issue ceased to exist ... UNTIL I played a BD in my PS3 ... I would get what can only be described as "SCREEN FLASH".

Well ... after spending some time cooling off and trying NOT to go crazy and do anything stupid like ... start throwing things (unwise) ... I decided to search the web for some answers and came across this thread.

I'll admit - I am somewhat of a rookie at this stuff - so please hang in there with me and I'll do my best to answer anyones questions ... however - I think I have a solution to this issue ... OK ...

I was in the main menue (GUI) of the 3310-CI and changed a setting called HDMI conversion from 1080P > 60Hz to 1080P 24Hz ... the flashing stopped!

So my thought (and question) is this ... I don't know a whole lot about AV, but I got my TV before the advent of 120HZ and 240HZ oversampling (or whatever it's called) - and I see that mine may be a 24HZ or 60 HZ TV ...

Either way (and if my terminology is technically correct) making this switch seemed to solve my issue.

BOTTOM LINE ... I was wondering if there were (or would be) any comments on this issue? I've heard a lot about this HDMI handshake issue (HDCP) WHATEVER thing ... and since I'm mechanically inclined, somewhat educated, AND I can screw in a lightbulb ... I figured I'd read up on the topic and try to solve my own issues ...

In the end, the TV people wanted to blame the source and the source wanted to blame the TV ... so basically, the consumer (ME) ends up with thousands of dollars of stuff the "ain't working to good and playing well with others".

Anyone have any thoughts on this post or this subject of changing that setting I mentioned? Would LOVE to hear what people smarter than me in this area have to say.

Hi all,

Couple more questions about the Denon 3310

1. I am also looking at the Onkyo 807 - any of you consider that one as well? Why did you choose the denon? Mine will be in a cabinet with a temp controlled fan - it will also have a component sitting on top. Do you think the denon will be "happier" in that situation?

2. There seem to be alot of posts with issues of the firmware upgrades. Are most people seeing no issues? I do understand that people without issues don't post as much and would like to know how reliable this unit will probably be.

3. I don't think this receiver can do this, but can any? I would like to take the audio that comes over a digital connection (Optical, HDMI) and have the option to send it to my zone 2. I use a separate Adcom 545 amp to power zone 2 currently. I use analog connections now to make this happen, but I notice that my LG BD370 does not output analog when the digital connection is going and I would like to avoid that problem if I could.

The 3310 is a pretty good match for what I want ( are there other receivers I am missing?) HD radio, Internet radio, good video conversion, decent power - 5 hdmi, etc.

thanks - Chris
1. The AVR will be "happy" if you've got at least 2"-3" clearance above it.
2. I'll leave this for a 3310 owner response.
3. Correct. Although if you send PCM 2.0 over optical it will transfer.

That is, Menu> Manual Setup > Network Setup > Network Connecting > Detail.

The networking was working fine before Jan 25th. Had it for a little over a month before things went haywire. No settings changed, no firmware updated, no new devices on the network. The only thing that COULD have triggered it was my wife turned it off by the little power button instead of the stand-by button.

When I go to Manual Setup > Network Setup > Network Connecting, I can't select it... it doesn't do anything. So I go into detail, and of course there it says Friendly Name (default 3310ci stuff), DHCP "ON", IP , MAC . I can go into "Other" and change the notification about updates/upgrades and networking during standby... but no other networking settings are available.

And of course NET/USB just says "Please wait... Connecting..."

Feel free to go through the baby steps with me, I'm not above realizing I've overlooked something. But yeah, I've been trying to get it working for over a week and read this thread completely. Anyone with any thoughts/tips/help/answers would be very greatly appreciated!
I'm having the exact same problem as amlethae.

I have had my unit for a few months with no issues (after returning the first one, anyway...).

But, just this weekend, I turned it off via the main power switch for the first time in quite a while. I had to kill the power to the room, so I wanted to turn the unit off cleanly before doing so. I put it in standby, then turned it off, then turned off its power strip.

After turning everything back on, it no longer connects to the network.

I cannot get into the "Network Connecting" menu (as I suspect is what amlethae meant about not being able to change DHCP settings- none of the settings are accessible, the entire menu is inaccessible)

When I check "Network Information", interestingly (in my case) the unit has an IP address. I had manually configured it, and is still has the address I gave it.

After a processor reset, DHCP was turned back on, but nothing else has changed (it even remembered my manual address assignment through the proc reset).

I contacted Denon, and they have no solution for me other than to send the unit in for repair. They did try something else after the processor reset that I thought I would share (may be in batbig's guide already, I'm not sure). Apparently, holding the up and down buttons on the front-panel navigation circle while powering the unit on is ... well, it's some other kind of reset. I didn't think to ask for more details, the tech support rep told me it resets something beyond the initial processor reset. He mentioned it almost never helps, but in one or two cases he's seen it fix network issues. It didn't help me, obviously.

It's interesting to me that 2 or 3 people on these boards have had these problems all at the same time. Something related to the recent firmware upgrade available? I'm not sure.

I don't want to be another one of the many unhappy owners, but if I've gotten two duds in a row... I don't know, it's hard not to have some buyer's remorse.

Having had the unit for a few months, I really like it a lot- if it would just function as it's supposed to. The only thing it doesn't do that I wish it did (now that I've had it) is downconverting HD inputs for zone 2. Something I didn't even know I wanted- so that's really just being picky. If the unit would work, and continue to work without hassle, I think I'd be quite happy with it. It just seems a little too... fragile.

EDIT: Oh, I wanted to mention as well- I am also seemingly able to ping the 3310 successfully. This seems especially odd to me. I cannot use the net control (web ui), though.

skisteep- I'm not sure, but I don't think your question is really 3310-related at all.

I have the setup you describe, and it does work great- but the 3310 is not really involved any more than, say, watching cable on my cable box.

Boxee on a hacked apple tv is a great way to watch internet video, and the atv itself is great for music and video streaming/playing. It's certainly a big step up from the 3310's native internet radio and music streaming UI.

For me, I plan on using both in a multi-zone whole-house setup. So, one room (zone 2) could be listening to music on the apple TV, while the other room (zone 3) is using the net/usb input for internet radio (all while someone is watching a movie in zone 1). So, it's nice the 3310 can do it- but it's totally unrelated to an apple tv or any other type of set-top box supplying A/V input.

Not sure if that answers your question, but feel free to ask any other questions about the setup. The only downside I've had with it so far is an aTV will not simultaneously output HD and SD video- only one or the other. So, you can't have it display in HD in the main zone and also display in zone 2. (which is why I wish the 3310 would downconvert...)

Hi, I just bought a 3310 today and did a FW update, it has been stuck on "ether SBL 1min" for an hour, any thoughts??

Thanks

So my new 3310ci has a couple of issues and turns out they are related.

Audyssey would fail during auto detect saying there was a phase issue with my Left Front. Sure enough I swapped the cables and poof .. my speakers are no longer 180 degrees out of phase. I verified my speaker cables are marked correctly since my equipment is in a closet... that wasn't the problem. It sounded like an AVR issue, so to verify I swapped the L and R on the back of the AVR and sure enough the problem followed the channel, not the speaker.

Since I bought a refurb, what do you want to bet the previous owner had a bad left channel...

L and R out of phase leads me to my second issue ... crappy audio quality

Good think I haven't sold my 2807 yet!!
