I don't have my sub yet, but I'll attempt to describe how features like these usually
work. (You have the gist of it correct.)
When not being used, the sub will drop down into some sort of standby mode. It's not fully
off, but it's mostly off. As soon as the sub "hears" a signal on its input, it turns itself fully on. There will often be a slight (less than a second) delay as this happens, so it's possible that the sub will "miss" the very beginning of whatever sound woke it up. This is probably not a big deal for most people.
After the signal stops, the sub will shut itself down again, entering that mostly-off standby mode again. Typically, there is a delay of 10 minutes or so before this happens. This prevents the sub from shutting down prematurely during quiet or bass-less sections of content.
Because auto-modes still draw power 24/7, I'd be even happier if there was some way to automatically shut it all
the way down when I'm not using it. That's why I'm investigating the power-strip thingamabob.
